I employ 100 staff, rough statistics: 20 people use up their full entitlement each year, another 20 sometimes use their 10 days, and sometimes not; and the other 60 use 2-3 days per year.

It’s always the same people in each category.

timmmay: Where I work there's thousands of staff, I doubt anyone gets extra leave unless they have a generous immediate manager.

Maybe I had it easy with my GGMs or execs but the only two times where HR in the various places I worked in (all very large corporates) resisted my attempts at doing the right thing by my people (and the resistance was actually pretty low level - just asked a few questions) they either came down like the Hiroshima nuke on them or just told me to ignore HR.

Are there many in the first 20 that have young families ? Or are looking after elderly relatives ?

When my kids were young, I was taking most of my sick leave to look after them when they were ill. Now that my kids are now adults, I no longer use much of my sick leave  - maybe 2-3 days for myself per year.

Though I seem to have taken a few more days this year to attend to my elderly mums health needs - doctors and hospital visits.
