Dear old mum (82) told she needs a couple of "zirconia crowns". Estimate for the two crowns, temporary crowns, maintenance visit etc comes to around $8k.

Is that typical, high or low?

Cheers

If they're like other healthcare businesses, it often seems to cost more then they suggest once you add in the semi-essential extras though...

From memory I paid around $1500 for a gold crown on a rear tooth a couple of years back, including the temporary crown, in central Wellington. $8K seems excessive. Get another estimate.

Hells bells, hope the 8K one is wrong. Have been told no 3 child might need them and apparently BOP DHB (or whatever) won't pay for them but Auckland will. Guess where we live. Apparently he has something unpronounceable which means the enamel on some teeth didn't form properly and crowns are the only long term solution.

I needed two crowns last year, and from memory they were $1350 each. The dentist took 3D photos of my mouth, then a computer program designed the crowns. It took about 15 minutes for the crowns to be milled from a ceramic block. So it was all competed in one visit; no temporary crowns. A follow up visit was included in the cost.

So yes, shop around and get some other quotes!

Give Edward Leung a call in Wellington. From memory mine were $600 each about 4 years ago.

Hypomineralisation?

Are you using tooth mousse on them daily?
