A couple of months ago I spent a couple of days wearing ski boots that were too small for one foot and that big toe nail went black afterwards.

There was no lasting toe pain - a similar thing happened in the past and it grew out in time.

The whole big toe nail has just lifted off my toe but is still attached at the cuteickle, I think it's called.

My question : should I try keep the nail on the toe or just rip it off like a plaster?

Cut it back so that it doesn't rip off.  Then tape down the remainder.  You do not want to rip it off.  There will be blood and pain.

I have had this a few times after multiday hikes hiking (I have some strange shaped big toe nails)

Thanks. The bit under the nail is not 'wet' so I suppose that area would cope with life but I might keep the nail on there to cover it for now, see how it goes.

Then you want to tape that toe down. Use some zinc tape. You do not want it to catch on your sock and rip off.

I only have electrical tape to hand so it looks like my toe has been attended to by some dodgy trade.

Go to a doctor.

Advice on toe nails falling off from a website wouldn't be a great idea in my books.

I had a fingernail do the same recently. Went to the doc who gave the advice of:

- tape it down with a plaster that has fabric/cotton in the centre so the nail itself isn't held down by the tape part.

- change the plaster regularly and keep the area clean

- do NOT rip it off, let it grow out and keep it trimmed back so it doesn't catch

- if it does decide to fall off then let it

- go to the doctor again if it gets infected

No way to speed it up or make it easier unfortunately, and doctors can't do much to help it, just manage it as best you can. Good luck! :-)

Thanks, I realise this is going to be a long ride. The last time that nail got damaged it took 11 months to grow out.

Black and dead toenails..the bane of the long distance runner 😂. I've had several, all resulting from incorrectly fitted shoes. Once I sorted this out, I've reduced the incidences to practically zero. Even the last 50km event was blessfully dead toenail free hahaha

I had that on both big toes when I took up snowboarding a few years ago.  Just leave it and wait for it to fall off IMO.   I would not suggest ripping it off. Taping it is a good idea if needed - I spent a few months taping mine to go surfing etc.    Be prepared for 12-18months for them to grow back fully and return to looking completely normal :O

A few days after posting the nail just broke away entirely. Underneath is half a nail - it only extends part way from the cuticle towards the toe's end.

It appears the old nail has kind of delaminated from the underlying bit so there has been no blood or pain - although I'm just waiting for some oaf to stand on it one day. I'm sure that'll smart.
