A new milestone in yesterday's reported case numbers - not a single local case in either NZ or AU.

From my now somewhat incomplete records that has happened only twice before (2nd & 8th of June) since the end of Feb.

Singapore not far behind. In the last fortnight, 6 days had no local cases and a max of 2 on any day – most of those in dorm accommodation.

footnote: these guys (SG and VIC) have been doing what they're doing for months and months. it's not a 2-week turnaround as some people seem to think. in the case of Vic - shutdown (well their version of it) since what June? just checked - july 9

Unfortunately paywalled, should be more info as time goes on from other sources.

Much like battery technology claims there is a path from lab to real world that may take some time and results in interim may not be so impressive.

There are it seems better tests, but then costs go up, and part of deal is to have a test that is cheap to repeat often, easy and quick.
Like testing 10K students a day, every day at some USA campuses that are being trialed.
We will get there but not today it seems.

when politicians decide to buy stuff from ebay this happens. luckily then don't sell vaccines on ebay ...

on the flip side someone just got their retirement sorted

Yes, as per chart below (lockdown info approx sketched on). Big difference between VIC and US & EU is that VIC did not cut their lockdown short. Other relevant bit is that their initial softer version of a lockdown did not work (though it did impact the rate of growth in case numbers).

The reward - as of this morning, VIC now 7 straight days of no cases.

Victoria are very close to elimination, in fact they are getting so close, that their health service has to keep telling people they only have suppression policy

They have had no new cases for 7 days and only 20 active cases remain ( presumably in some home isolation)

If all goes well these cases will recover in the next 2 weeks and we will only have one state with a low level outbreak..

Questions are being raised about Niugini Biomed which is yet to do any clinical trials.
Eight doctors and scientists have supposedly scanned 30,000 existing drugs - picking three to be combined into their claimed cure.

“I can tell you how we found the cure, God,” Niugini Biomed secretary Frank M’Alin said.
“Can you imagine the economic implications it's going to be for this country? The world is going to run to this nation because we have the solution for Covid-19.”

Leaked documents from the prime minister’s office shows NZ$4 million has been allocated to fund the research.

Europes lock downs seem to be just about slowing it down and removing a high peak of cases so the health system doesn't get overwhelmed, rather than anything to do with getting rid of it. Unlike Victorias lockdown which is more about eliminating it, and is why they have apparently had the longest lockdown in the world so far. The problem is that potentially they could have years of such lockdowns in EUrope, even with a vaccine, which is going to be very bad for the economies.It would depend on how effective a vaccine is and how long it is effective for. So it is a case of whether this is going to be a new normal for potentially years. The WHO is apparently telling countries they shouldn't use lockdowns, which I am guessing is referring to these countries who are not able to control it's spread like Europe, without having to keep going into lockdowns.

Europe are basically hoping to slow it enough to allow the health system to "flatten the curve" - remember that phrase from the COVID past

4 weeks will not be enough, and there are varying degrees pf severity... I think I heard that garden centres would still be open in the UK?

New Auckland Community Case

A worker from the Jet Park quarantine facility in Māngere. Had eaten brunch at Mezze Bar on Thursday before visiting a Queen St liquor store.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) said anyone who was at the Mezze Bar between 11am and 1pm on Thursday is considered a casual contact. They should watch for symptoms and get tested if they feel unwell. The person dined alone, and no close contacts had been identified at the restaurant.

After leaving the restaurant, the person went to Liquor.Com on Queen St for 15 minutes around 1.30pm. Those who visited the bottle shop between 1pm and 2pm are also casual contacts and should watch for symptoms. People who scanned the Covid-19 Tracer app at those locations at similar times should receive a notification, confirming they were there around the same time as the case.
