The one thing that stood out for me with the Northland case was the SHORTAGE of testing nurses. On the first day of testing they had two nurses at the main testing station. One to carry out the swab and the other doing the paperwork.

Id like to know how many of these 6 hour queues are people who have symptoms or have been to the locations that MoH have advised. And how many are feeling great, not been to any of the locations but are getting a panic test. I believe only the former were asked to get a test

There was a couple of volunteer nurses on the news last night that headed to northland

The odd thing I don't get.. Stand infront of the country. Tell everyone we only need close contact or place of interest criteria (or sick) to line up. Have streams of people queued and complaining. It finally gets through a couple of days later and people panic a bit less

But at no time has it been mentioned if there was anyone - video appear to show no-one, not even a security guard or non nurse type. Walking down the line 'Hello sir, have you been to the places of interest or know this person.. no? please return home'

Save those waiting who don't qualify complaining. Ensures those that do need to be are bumped.

/edit Snap. Not just me then!

It's easy to find yourself in a tricky situation and for most, common sense does not prevail.

To date we have done 1.5M tests for less than 2,500 positive results.

I've been tested once now (as a result of this latest Pullman MIQ thing) and knew I was overwhelmingly likely to have a negative result, along with everyone else being tested at my location.

South of Auckland so long queues were not a problem. Had I been in Northland (where I grew up and still visit) I would definately have waited a few more days and just stayed home (regardless of work), knowing that long queues were inevitable. In the unlikely but possible event of symptoms I would then present for a test.

Being south of Auckland but having had visitors for a day who had been staying over with family in one of the listed places up there I had to tell my employer, cancel other appointments, plasma donation etc. To return to work (a major exporter and very serious) I have to have negative test result despite having no symptoms. No one wants to be that person that takes the virus into their place of work.

according to Breaking News - all in MIQ will now need to stay in their rooms after their day 12 test until the end of their stay

you mean they were not staying in their rooms in quarantine all these while?

someone could enlighten me ...

Exercise in a yard, and smoking in a smoking area has been permitted. You might be thinking of aussie.

This requirement seems like a knee jerk. Surely the staying in room needs to start 4+ days prior to the last test.

I assume that they were allowed access to the exercise yard, that's now been stopped after day 12.

But that was the next day and only a 'couple'. A flying squad of five could of been there on day one.

Add some policemen or military for exactly that and car/crowd control. Add them into the Flying Squad from the start - total squad of 6 or 7 personal. In fact this is exactly what the military are meant to be good at, they have the logistic's, just add in the 5 nurses.

The military have nurses too.

But, not being under martial law, they don't have any powers to enforce car/crowd control.

But these flying squads will be unemployed, or at least dispensable, all of the time that they're not at the site of an emergency. This is the perpetual resourcing conundrum... if you want resources to be available, they can't be in (dedicated) use. Is it better to have 5 nurses working as usual, or to have them available for a once in 6 months event?

Yes they do but not in quantities required.

Just as it is now with the MIQ facilities there is a policeman attached.

That is what volunteer means. You place yourself as being available when the need is required. It has been my understanding right from the start of the surge force call up, that at any time of call up we would be recompensed.

Council worker wiped licked fingers on workplace window the day he recovered from Covid-19 | Stuff.co.nz

An Invercargill animal control officer who licked his fingers and wiped them down his workplace reception window the day he was told he had recovered from Covid-19 has lost his job and been fined $1500.

Michael James Murdoch, who had interim name suppression, appeared in the Invercargill District Court on Thursday for sentencing on a charge of failing to comply with a medical officer of health requirement to stay at home unless it was for essential personal movement or an essential permitted movement.

On April 16, Murdoch had been called by the Southern District Health Board to say he was cleared of Covid-19.

Later that day and again on April 22, during the national alert level 4 lockdown, Murdoch went to his workplace, deemed an essential service, and asked to be let inside despite not being rostered to work.

When he was declined entry he licked his fingers and wiped them down the face of the reception window. On the second occasion Murdoch repeated the actions of April 16 but pulled out a small knife, then also licked or breathed on his hands and wiped them on a co-worker’s car door.

Covid: Australian states to reopen to Sydney after outbreak contained - BBC News

South Australia and Queensland will remove their travel restrictions on Sunday and Monday respectively.

It comes after NSW reported 11 days without a locally acquired infection.

About 180 cases were tied to the Sydney cluster, which emerged just before Christmas and prompted nationwide travel bans on the city's residents.

Australia has recorded more than 22,000 cases and 909 deaths since the pandemic began - far fewer than many other countries.

Australia extends suspension of New Zealand travel bubble for another 72 hours - NZ Herald

Australia has extended the suspension of its one-way travel bubble with New Zealand for another 72 hours.

The hold on the bubble is now due to end on Sunday, January 31, at 4pm NZT.

It comes after the latest revelations from the Ministry of Health, where two more people who recently completed managed isolation at Auckland's Pullman Hotel have tested positive for Covid-19.

The Guardian: WHO: just 25 Covid vaccine doses administered in low-income countries

Director-general warns of ‘catastrophic moral failure’ if richer countries hoard treatment

The world is on the edge of a “catastrophic moral failure” in the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, with just 25 doses administered across all poor countries compared with 39,000,000 in wealthier ones, the head of the World Health Organization has said.
