Israel moving to quarantine everyone entering the country.

This is a political move. The original plan was for Israel to add the US (or at least some states) to the quarantine rules, but US Vice President Mike Pence intervened and Israel decided to apply the rule to all countries instead. Obviously it would look bad if the US was added to the quarantine rules and many other countries were not.

Mahon:

Another typical Jacinda decision, or rather lack of.

I am sure if the Government ordered them not to proceed you would be accusing the Prime Minister of running a totalitarian regime.

Most of the decisions the government is 'making' will be guided by the pandemic plan anyway. Anyone accusing the government of action or inaction needs to take a look at the last X years of both elected and non elected officials, instead of just blaming the prime minister of the day.

With stuff like this, with other examples in the local media just like this, and I have one contact that was the same, we are lucky to only have 5 cases.

I Believe Germany is being ultra aggressive in their testing for the virus, much more so than any other nation. This means they are picking up most of the mild/asymptomatic cases.

They are also picking up cases earlier than other countries.

Germans are also generally very compliant and will report for testing promptly and on time if required to do so, unlike some nations I can think of...!

I suspect that number is largely useless by now. Are we still only testing people who have come into contact with a confirmed case or traveled? If you are assuming you won't find community spread and therefore aren't looking for it, you won't be identifying any community spread even when it does happen.

They are mapping where in the genes the mutations are occurring.  They also know what some of the genes do. So in the graph below, the 'S' gene is responsible for producing the protein that binds with the ACE2 receptor. So mutations in this area may change how effective the virus binds to the ACE2 receptor.

Interesting science blog here by Geneticist Ricki Lewis that points out a part of the gene of the 'spike' proteins (which are a likely avenue for a vaccine) exactly matches the South China Sea Soldierfish..

My wife is unwell and rang the MOH 0800 number. She found it experience absolutely pointless. They advised her to contact her GP. Our GP has on their website that if you have concerns to contact the MOH 0800 number. Classic catch 22. My wife's job involves dozens of meetings a week and meeting many people she was concerned as the has a low grade temperature around 38.5, headache and sore throat. She was not advised by the MOH to self isolate.

Yep. Relying on volunteers (public) Thats ok if its low risk here, low likelihood, but we dont know. If in a few weeks we have a case or two  at Invers, Westport, Hastings, Turangi, then we will know its everywhere

Is a headache and sore throat symptoms of Covid-19? I woudn't have thought so.

Contact the media? And by this I don't mean start a witch-hunt but draw attention to the problem so that resources can be focused on it, I don't know of any other ready way to send feedback to the government that things aren't working.

MoH says contact them or your GP. Seems some GP's are just opting out, save them time, dump it on one 0800 number instead? I would have tbhough call GP, what symptoms? are you coughing, shortness of breath, and a temp of 38+? if so call MoH, if not, you are not displaying Covid-19 symptoms. MoH would say the same I expect. Respiratory difficulties is the key symptom, but even then it may not be the virus, but I would imagine you would be told to self isolate, and call hospital if you are not coping at home. This is what I read/here when MoH has their meetings

Symptoms of COVID- 19.....

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhoea.

I don't believe that she has COVID-19 (fingers, toes, nostrils crossed) so as the saying goes "shhhhhhhh not a doctor" I was however showing what I believe is a catch 22 and there should not be catch 22 scenarios when combating this.  She is waiting for our GP to ring her.

Ok, what I quoted the three symptoms is from the MoH website. Its clear that some GP's are not playing their part if they fob you off. The catch 22 is in part caused by GP's like this who wont entertain a patients call. How much that overloads the 0800 number I'm unsure. Someone else reported in the media took an hour to get through, so one would asusme that everyone is calling them? Maybe everyone with a sniffle? Or they get fobbed off by the GP?

What do you suggest?
