Batman:

I thought most antivaxxers/naturalists are non religious ... But that's just my impression from their posts on the Internet.

But that's pre covid. Since covid all bets are off. What people believe now seems to be what they get sent on social media.

Pre Covid ( Jun 19, 2019) article on the subject.

Note the comment that in almost all the examples discussed (with exceptions), the undeniably strong correlation between religiosity and "anti vaxxers" isn't necessarily in line with "officially endorsed" teachings.

FWIW, a Dr friend of mine's daughter is married to and lives with the NZ Samoan community - most of whom are very religious - in her case they're Catholic.  I'm a friend of hers on FB, most of her posts are countering the anti-vaxx fearmongering in that community - and she's been active with that for years.  The official leader (the Pope) is not an anti-vaxxer - and has been quite public with his pro-vaccination views.

I’m not making excuses, but I think the government needs to do more for casual workers if they expect them to comply. I mean, it’s fine for me and my colleagues who work desk jobs to call the boss and tell them I’m working from home today as I’ve got a few sniffles. I have a laptop and a company supplied mobile phone and I can be just as productive from home as I can from the office.

Casual workers, the likes of people in fast food chains don’t get paid if they don’t show up for their shift. They’re also the people where every shift is required to pay rent, bills. If the government want compliance out of these people then their income needs to be guaranteed or they will keep showing up for shifts when they shouldn’t.

I agree. Support for those who need to isolate should be a no brainier. If it even prevents one more level shift it will have paid for itself.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

AP-NORC poll: A third of US adults skeptical of COVID shots

About 1 in 3 Americans say they definitely or probably won’t get the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a new poll that some experts say is discouraging news if the U.S. hopes to achieve herd immunity and vanquish the outbreak.

The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that while 67% of Americans plan to get vaccinated or have already done so, 15% are certain they won’t and 17% say probably not. Many expressed doubts about the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness.

The poll suggests that substantial skepticism persists more than a month and a half into a U.S. vaccination drive that has encountered few if any serious side effects. Resistance was found to run higher among younger people, people without college degrees, Black Americans and Republicans.

Is it guaranteed.

The Govt funds this via the Covid short-term absence payment scheme when you have to self isolate while waiting for a test result. It's a one off $350 payment for the employee.

If you're required to isolate for longer due to being a close or close plus contact (ie isolate for 5 days or 14 days) then many people are eligible for the Covid leave support scheme.

And the key thing here is there was absolutely no requirement for those people to not be working at Kmart of KFC. They were not required to isolate under MoH guidelines at the time.

wellygary:

Articles have said after leaving MIQ she went to Auckland, well OZ just hotspotted Auckland so she's in for more quarantine and testing when she gets back to OZ...

If she had just accepted the test and left MIQ in 14 days, she would have been able to get home while NZ was still green zoned....

Oh well, maybe Karma is appropriately allocated by the universe...

Firstly if she'd just accepted the test and left MIQ after 14 days it would been marginal if she'd been able to get home or not before the current flight restrictions came in. Remember that MIQ facilities are hot zones, so to be eligible for a green flight to Australia you need to have spent 14 days in NZ after leaving MIQ before flying to Australia. While there is a current temporary restriction on green flights to Australia, she's still not going to be eligible to catch one for another 12ish days.

Secondly the status of Auckland hasn't really changed. Australia have temporarily restricted people from NZ because of what is happening, but for the last month or so anybody from Auckland flying on a green flight to Australia has been required to present a negative PCR test at check-in. If you are not from Auckland (ie transiting AKL from somewhere else in NZ) this is not a requirement.

She knows the rules. My pick was she wanted to go to Auckland just so she could then protest about the requirement for a PCR test to fly to Aussie. If she'd stayed in Wellington that would not have been required.

Press release:

With a suite of Government income support packages available, Minister for Social Development and Employment Carmel Sepuloni is encouraging people, and businesses, connected to the recent Auckland COVID-19 cases to check the Work and Income website if they’ve been impacted by the need to self-isolate.

“If you are required to self-isolate and can’t work from home, I encourage you to check the Work and Income website and talk to your employer about the government support you may be eligible for,” said Carmel Sepuloni.

The Work and Income website provides clear and concise information about what support is available for different contact categories and locations of interest, connected to the recent Auckland COVID-19 cases and can be found here

Short Term Absence Payment

“The COVID-19 Short-Term Absence Payment is available for businesses, including self-employed people, to help pay their workers who cannot work from home while they wait for a COVID-19 test result.

“This is a one-off payment of $350. Businesses can apply for the Short-Term Absence Payment if they’ve been advised that their worker, or a self-employed person, is:

  • staying home while waiting for a COVID-19 test result, in accordance with public health guidance, or are;
  • the parent or caregiver of a dependant who is staying home while waiting for their COVID-19 test results, in accordance with public health guidance, and the dependant needs support to do so safely, or are;
  • a household member or secondary contact (as described in public health guidance) of someone who is a close contact of a person with COVID-19, and the worker has been advised to stay at home while waiting for the close contact’s test results.

Leave Support Scheme

“Also available is the Leave Support Scheme which is for those who meet certain criteria and have to self-isolate, cannot go to work, and cannot work from home.

“The Leave Support Scheme is paid as a lump sum and covers two weeks for each eligible employee. The Leave Support Scheme is paid at a flat rate of $1176.60 for people who were working 20 hours or more per week (full-time rate) and $700 for people who were working less than 20 hours per week (part-time rate).

“The employer must pay their employees any amount required by the employment agreement and employment legislation. The Leave Support Scheme requirements do not remove or reduce this obligation.

Auckland Resurgence Support Line

“The Ministry for Social Development have also established an Auckland Resurgence Support Line to offer welfare support to the Papatoetoe community, and has since been widened to include those being asked to self-isolate as a result of the subsequent Kmart and KFC cases.

“We all have a role to play in stamping out COVID from our communities. That is why MSD will continue to work closely with the Papatoetoe High School community, and reach out to employers in the Auckland area to make sure they’re all aware of the support that is available, and how to access it,” says Carmel Sepuloni.

The Ministry’s response to COVID-19 sits alongside other support that the Government is providing, for example, the Resurgence Support Payment to support businesses impacted from the most recent lockdown.

Key COVID-19 information has also been translated in over 20 languages, alongside accessible formats for the disabled community.

Not quite.. it is an older sibling of a student that was asymptomatic and tested negative three times

Although it's a pretty poorly written paragraph in the article

From the media release

The case, known as Case M, is an older sibling of a Papatoetoe High School student who was a casual plus contact. The student had returned 3 recent negative tests and is asymptomatic.

After reading the NZ Herald and Stuff stories I'm more confused than ever.

How can somebody who has tested positive have visited a gym yesterday when the only positive case today was that family member who they're saying has symptoms on Tuesday?
