New (non peer reviewed) real world data from Istrail on the Pfizer vaccine released.

In summary: The Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine 97% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 cases and 94% effective against asymptomatic infection

Surprisingly, death (about 20% of peak number), new cases (about a third), and total case numbers (about half) in Israel haven't dropped much. Possibly the higher-than-expected death rate is because nowadays there's a long lead time between infection and death, due to improved medical treatment? But why still so many new cases? Have they relaxed social distancing with widespread vaccination?

@hairy1 , I was online with a lady in the UK whose sister has long covid and was in a bad way.

Since getting her vaccine her health has improved immeasurably.

I don't know what if any trials have been done in this area, but wouldn't it be amazing if it worked for all long-haulers.

There have been plenty of similar reports that I've read about in recent months.

There are over 1 million in Israel who haven't been vaccinated and they haven't started vaccinating the Palestinians who come across the border.

Press release:

The Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern and the Premier of Niue Dalton Tagelagi have announced passengers from Niue can resume quarantine-free travel into New Zealand on Wednesday 24 March NZT (Tuesday 23 March Niue time).

“Niue has no reported cases of COVID-19 and its stringent border controls mean we can be confident it is safe to commence quarantine-free travel to New Zealand from Niue,” Jacinda Ardern said.

Premier Dalton Tagelagi said, “Niue welcomes being able to travel to New Zealand without the need to quarantine. Niue is one of the few countries in the world that is completely free of COVID-19 and we pride ourselves on protecting our people through maintaining our borders and health system. This one-way quarantine free travel will enable Niueans to receive essential healthcare, access education and economic opportunities, and reconnect with their families in New Zealand.”

Premier Tagelagi adds that Niue will maintain its current border settings, so only returnees with Government approval may enter Niue and will need to quarantine or self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

Officials of both governments are working towards ensuring all safety protocols and response capabilities are in place for the resumption of two-way quarantine free travel between the two countries.

Further information on safety protocols for travel

To be eligible to enter New Zealand, people in Niue must meet particular conditions, including:

  • not having been overseas outside of Niue or New Zealand in the past 14 days;
  • not having had contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case within the past 14 days;
  • having maintained physical distancing (to the greatest extent practicable) from any person, at the airport at which they arrive, who did not arrive from Niue;
  • having worn a face covering while in the airport at which they arrived in New Zealand; and
  • there are no reasonable grounds (as determined by a suitably qualified health practitioner) to suspect that the person may have COVID-19. That might include, among other things:

    • having had contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case within the past 14 days;
    • having any COVID-19 symptoms; and
    • be awaiting a COVID-19 test result

New Zealand public health officials will be undertaking random temperature checks of passengers on all flights arriving from Niue into New Zealand.

Auckland Airport will use a streamlined Safe Travel Path to process passengers arriving quarantine-free from Niue. The Safe Travel Path creates separation from other arriving passengers by giving quarantine-free travel zone flights exclusive use of the international terminal for arrivals processing – with no other arriving flights within 90 minutes either side of the scheduled arrival time.

The Safe Travel Path is created by:

  • Using flight scheduling to ensure no other international flights from outside a quarantine-free travel zone to arrive within 90 minutes either side of an arriving Niue flight
  • Rigorous cleaning of terminal areas along the Safe Travel Path between flights
  • Escorting passengers off Niue flights when terminal cleaning has concluded and following an arrivals path through the terminal marked out with stanchions and barriers
  • Dedicated border processing lanes and facilities, which will be blocked off when not in use by Niue passengers
  • A baggage reclaim carousel and baggage trolleys used exclusively by travellers arriving quarantine-free. When not in use the carousel will be blocked off and trolleys will be sanitised and stored ready for the next quarantine-free flight
  • A double-layer physical barrier in the public area of the arrivals hall blocking access to the terminal exit path used by travellers going into managed isolation or quarantine.

I don't get this.
I'm all for the vaccine, and if someone wants to give me some money to take it that would be an added bonus.
However, if I was concerned about its safety, or that it might cause side-effects or whatever other reasons people have for not wanting it, getting a $100 wouldn't suddenly change my mind.

Boss:"will you be getting the covid vaccine?"
Employee:"no, I don't believe it's safe"
Boss:"I'll give you a hundy if you get the shot"
Employee:"oh, ok then"  *rolls up sleeve

This type of thing could help sway people who are easily swayed - the type of people who might buy into Advance NZ's latest conspiracy project, the antivax pamphlet they've been distributing.
Or, it could be construed as "proof" that the government is trying to be sneaky and underhand.

They’ve started vaccinating working Palestinians this week https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/3/8/israel-starts-vaccinating-palestinian-workers-after-delays

Last I read the Rabbis had approved the vaccine for the Haredi Jews. Also misinformation has been an issue. One Israeli man suspended his antivax Facebook page when his pregnant sister in law died. It hit too close to home to ignore.

Yes - had experience with this as a paediatric nurse. Unless it touches you personally then vaccines are bad for you.

You don't flick a switch and become protected. It takes time to fully vaccinate and then takes time for the vaccine to become effective.

Case numbers here in the UAE are down to 2400 per day from 3500 at the end of January. About 20% of the population is fully vaccinated with doses at around 65 per 100 people. They haven't changed restrictions significantly in that period.

Re Italy.

Italy has administered so far about 6 million vaccine doses.
About 4.5 million people with at least one dose, Almost 2M have had both.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_vaccination_in_Italy

Total population is about 60M, so they have a ways to go before it makes a difference.
They suffered horribly at the start and its still a year later surging again.

Charts and numbers on vaccinations for each state across Europe, most well south of 10% so far.
https://www.euronews.com/2021/03/12/covid-19-vaccinations-in-europe-which-countries-are-leading-the-way

UK from a population of about 68M have about 23M with first dose and 1.4M with second.

You can see increasing pressure across Europe on vaccine supply when they are monitoring exports.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/10/britain-has-no-ban-on-covid-vaccine-exports-eu-concedes

IMHO our TV news etc, is rather sparse on covering how world is progressing.
Maybe a quick mention of something big like Italy lockdown, or Brazil is doing badly, then back to Royal goings on.
Nothing to give context the continuous progress of rest of world, cases and vaccinations.
A few regular state of play graphics maybe useful.

At least it would show nutters talking about us being used to test vaccines, the millions and 10s millions, and heading for 100's millions well before us.

There was an interesting article posted a few up.

Sounds like the government has basically declared the pandemic over, I assume reducing social distancing. That said they have some kind of a "green card" system so only the vaccinated can access high risk area's like gym's, Large events etc.

Something like 50% of the population is fully vaccinated, but that is not evenly distributed. Certain groups (ethnic / religious / geographic?) lag well behind. The vaccine is very effective at protecting those fully vaccinated, but it seems the vaccinated population is still high enough for significant case number's.

I'm sure the world will be watching with interest as they go from 50% to 70% fully vaccinated. I would expect the latter value to result in a big drop in case numbers.

I wasn't too convinced on Israels methods.

They opened bars, and offered a shot for a shot. Colour me blue, if asking people to mingle together to get something that takes a few weeks to take effect isn't the smartest idea when it's still floating around  ;)

https://www.timesofisrael.com/care-for-a-shot-with-your-shot-tel-aviv-sets-up-vaccine-station-in-local-bar/

Sounds more like a publicity stunt (and perhaps a handy place to have a vaccination center). Bar in the artical above was in an area where restaurants & bars are restricted to take out only.

Given that everybody 16+ has been able to get vaccinated since Feb 3, all the really keen people will have gone already, and they are not trying to get the more reluctant vaccinated. Sounds like the green pass is a major selling point. Adult in the above article's mother told him to hold off getting the vaccine, and sounded like he would have followed her advice if he didn't badly want to go back to the gym which requires a green pass.
