A tidy new ongoing profit stream (except likely to see increasing competition, so it should not be carte blanche).

Not just for price competition, but with complex logistics you probably don't want all eggs in the same basket.  From wiki:

The Pfizer plant in Puurs is responsible for all vials for destinations outside the United States.[198] Therefore, all doses administered in the Americas outside of the United States have required at least two transatlantic flights (one to take DNA to Europe and one to bring back finished vaccine vials).

In February 2021, Pfizer revealed that the entire sequence initially took about 110 days on average from start to finish, and that the company was making progress on reducing the time to 60 days.[205] More than half the days in the production process are dedicated to rigorous testing and quality assurance at each of the three stages.[205] Pfizer also revealed that the process requires 280 components and relies upon 25 suppliers located in 19 different countries.

Thank you for those figures.

What are percentage sensitivities for nasopharyngeal swap test ??

I have a SnS who has always stated she would only have a saliva oral test due to the 'fiction' that the nasopharyngeal test hurts and can be dangerous to the recipient.

what's a SnS ?

Testing has moved of a lot on the last 12 months, and rapid/antigen tests have filled a spot in the market for quick tests that aren't focused on telling you whether you might have had Covid several months ago and still have weak strains of the virus, but simply whether at this very point in time if you're infectious and likely to infect other people.

Both NAAT and rapid tests have a place in the market.

I don't pretend to know the details of rapid testing - but in the UK they are reporting today that false positives for asymptomatic people being rapid tested are between 90-98%.
This is at the same time as they are rolling out the tests and encouraging all the population to have a rapid test.

DS248:

Pfizer CEO: Third Covid vaccine dose likely needed within 6 - 12 months, then possibly annually

“A likely scenario is that there will be likely a need for a third dose, somewhere between six and 12 months and then from there, there will be an annual revaccination, but all of that needs to be confirmed. And again, the variants will play a key role.”

A tidy new ongoing profit stream (except likely to see increasing competition, so it should not be carte blanche).

That was a given. Even if it wasn't they'd make it one to keep the cashflow :P

But yeah. I standfast when I say, this needed to be a far better co-ordinated global attack vs biggest bank or superpower to themselves. The ones snubbing the idea of vaccine, and those doing it too fast (or to slow) if this needs to have a time-limited booster is going to have negative effects once we're all rolling around in one of the 2 banks. At least with noone having it, it was a level playing field.

And if anyone needed a wakeup as to how the rest of the world is performing.. Bunch of kiwis head to Canada. Bunch of kiwis come down with infection. The timeline would be interesting, to see if they were initially spending time here in a mode of freedom-brain among each other that backfired

Another stupid idea. Take family to some other country while away for work? Yeah, that's not going to backfire...

Then what happens when the ship is ready to come back? Will they abide by the MIQ rules or just come in like nothing happened?

The refit started in 2019. It's not a short term thing.

I don't think the armed forces will ignore isolation requirements.

And they all have been there since? No one decided to move them since a pandemic started?

I don't know but you can't just abandon a warship. Given that most will be very low risk of lasting effects of covid there would have been little justification of them leaving.

12 people out of "103 naval personnel in Canada with the frigate HMNZS Te Mana, which is undergoing a major Frigate Systems Upgrade (FSU) of her combat capabilities and surveillance and counter measures." sounds like a lot (103 seems to be the total RNZ Navy and family).

Also one can't assume "most will be very low risk of lasting effects of covid".

It seems like a fairly typical cluster. If covid gets in to shared accomodation then it rips through it pretty quickly. Given the nature of their job the majority will be young and fit so do have a relatively low risk. They are doing an essential job and would understand the risk.

before you make brash comments like that, maybe know the situation a little better.

most if not all those personnel have been in Canada since January some time.

Ill ask you this, would you go away from your family for over a year with little to no chance of coming back to see them? or if you could take them with you would you?

What has happened to the 3 other ships that have deployed during the pandemic? all have preformed 14 days of isolation on their way back.

nothing has backfired, they are people in another country which is still having a covid outbreak, its no different to the thousands of other kiwis overseas still, some of which have gotten covid.
