GeekGuy: I had my first Pfizer jab yesterday and have just received a booking for my second jab by text message, for the 11th (5 days later).

So much for the 2 weeks period in between jabs.

When I got my first jab I was told (as was everyone else at my workplace) it had to be 3 weeks between jabs. We were scheduled for our second according to that.

Check they haven't just made a mistake / goofed and booked you for 11/5 instead of 11/6.

I agree with others stating that you shouldn't have the second shot 5 days later.

Israel data looks surprisingly good with only ~59% of the population having had a first jab and ~55% fully vaccinated. Surprising because there are likely concentrated sub-populations of unvaccinated people (Ultra Orthodox, and other?)

Turns out the proportion of population under 16 in Israel is higher than I envisaged. Don't have an actual figure but in 2019, 0-14 year olds constituted ~28% of the population, so at a guess 15 & under must be ~30%. [0-14 in NZ = ~20%]

So 59% of total population vaccinated is actually ~84% of the eligible population vaccinated (all Pfise-BoiNTech), which explains why the rate of vaccination dropped off over the last 6 weeks; ie. reaching saturation (especially with ~13% of the population being Ultra Orthodox Jews).

Any significant increase in numbers vaccinated will now depend on approval to vaccinate younger age groups

Good to see the vaccination rate approaching 85% of eligible people

There are few countries/territories where the figure is higher but the populations involved are 'tiny' (<100,000)

Wow. She says its an overreaction, a mere two day pause, but she then says:

Berejiklian said NSW health officials were working hard to "stop a super spreading event" with a slate of new restrictions in Greater Sydney over the next three days to minimise the chances of further cases spreading.

Thats a big (and necessary) reaction, but a 2 day pause is too much. Strange

Just an error, all sorted now ... I have surgery this month and it will be at least 3 weeks after that for the second jab.

Looks like the "NSW" wording in the travel pause is causing some possibly unintended consequences..

Perhaps it might have been better to target this at Greater Sydney...

"They are turning people away at Coolangatta airport that are booked on flights to Nz who have been in Byron bay but we can’t find any press information on the change since last night...

Canada has taken a different approach to vaccination, prioritising getting first dose to as many people as possible (this for example with Pfizer vaccine gives ~ 85% protection) and following up with the second dose "when available" - up to 4 months lag between doses. Off-label, but seems to be evidence that a longer gap between doses may provide eventual increased immunity vs the normal gap between doses. They've got a different requirement than NZ as they've got high levels of CT / ~9,000 new confirmed cases / day, but slowly reducing.

They did that here with AZ when the interim UK results showed higher efficacy with a bigger gap. I had ~10 weeks between my shots.

In April when my wife and I (in Canada) were vaccinated we were told we'd receive our next shot "no earlier than 12 weeks after the first dose" and "no later than 16 weeks".
This spacing would allow for "maximum protection against COVID-19".

Even though our first shots were AstraZeneca (chimp adenovirus vector) we've been notified the next shots will be Pfizer or Moderna (mRNA) vaccines.
Apparently there's no problem with mixing & matching the different types, and likely a "stronger immune response to a second dose with a different vaccine."

There's also been negative publicity here about people who've received AstraZeneca coming down with vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia - before our shots we were told the risk was "1 in 100,000 will need ICU care"
A few people have indeed been hospitalised, and lady died from a clot earlier this week, the news frenzy encouraging the Anti-mask, Anti-vax crowd (who are very vocal here) to start protesting again.

Around 40% of those age 16 or over in the Province - 1.4 million people - have had at least one shot, estimates are that they're going to hit vaccine hesitancy at 60%..
I'd be surprised if they even get to that number. This pandemic's brought surprisingly large numbers of anti-science nutters to the surface..
