New flu virus detected in China.  Something to watch but a bit too soon to be alarmed by it.

Noone seems to have mentioned the other 'bit late' change to refil the coffers and tighten up numbers from hotspot/non green countries.
You're liable for MIQ fees unless you spend 180 days here now. Not just 90 and hop scotch without being chased.

I really just don't know why we aren't charging everybody. To be doing this shows they want revenue to fund the program, and you can only conclude the previous policy was simply bringing in far less revenue than planned.

I think the idea was to give every NZer one free pass (Kiwis that just want a one way ticket home).

Those that feel they need to jet around the world continuously popping into NZ several times a year have had their one free pass to get home so now can pay whenever required to stay in an MIQ facility.

Both of these feel distinctly foolish to me. Thousands of cases and tens of deaths every day, but lets hold sporting events involving close contact of large groups of people and crowds of spectators.

So it's fine to give people who (mostly) haven't lived in NZ for years, paid no tax or contributed to society a free pass to come in, yet those who live in NZ, pay tax and contribute to society who have to travel to work or those who have to travel for business are being forced to pay multiple times.

How is that really fair?

Tokyo has extended the state of emergency to about 20 June, averaging over 500 new cases daily. We will pick it up in MIQ I guess

“Shots at the Shop”  ...  😏

The Washington Post - Coronavirus Updates

today

In Hyattsville, Maryland, patrons at The Shop Spa barbershop can get a shave, a cut and a shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

It's the first barbershop in the state that's also a vaccine clinic, though supporters hope this model is replicated nationwide.

As Stephen B. Thomas, a health policy professor at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, told The Post, barbers have “street credibility and can educate folks enough so that they want the vaccine.”

One barber estimated he was able to change people's minds on the vaccine about 60 percent of the time.

NZ citizens have a right to enter into the country, without being charged a fee.

Why should those who live in NZ, pay tax and contribute to society subsidise those who choose to travel for work? If it's a business expense, then the business should pay. After all, businesses deduct these expenses from their profit and claim the GST back, so it actually costs a business about half of what a private citizen pays.

Well I'm OK with it. One way tickets home is a finite thing.

For business it's just a business expense that's covered by the business as long as it is in business.

Personally feel you should have to pay for MIQ no matter what. If you’re choosing to travel during a pandemic, even if it’s for your business, that’s on you.
Arguably one free pass if you’re coming home and actually staying here to contribute to our society - and so I have no issue with the 180 day rule.

No, while NZ citizens have the right to enter the country, fees can be charged (and have been for many years - stuff like the customs processing fee).

Personally I think we should just be charging everyone using MIQ system sufficient fee's to cover running the system, but I do get how many people support there being fee MIQ for people who were overseas prior to the pandemic travel warnings being put up, and wanting to return long term. Potentially there are New Zealanders under serious financial stress due to pandemic related job losses etc...

Should note that NZ citizens / residents pick up about a 50% subsidy from the taxpayer when the use MIQ. Fees for Temporary visa holders are roughly double to avoid NZ citizens needing to subsidies people coming here for economic reasons (international music acts etc.)

Would you fly to Brisbane in early July, not having had the vaccine?
