Batman:

vaccine supply got a top up of 1 million doses https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/300328388/live-covid19-vaccine-update-from-the-ministry-of-health

This is just Pfizer delivering what they agreed to, we will get another gushy statement in early July when they will tell us about even more vaccines will arrive in August...

BUT, it looks like is it still going to be pretty tight until mid july when the ramp begins,- there was no delivery last week (stock went from ~290k to ~280K)... At ~100K a week we have less than 2 week supply,

https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-data-and-statistics/covid-19-vaccine-data#by_soh

If we assume that we get a "double" delivery this week, we might be able to hold that stock level, (we are still increasing the weekly vaccination numbers, so I would expect around 110-120 jabs this week)... but we really start to get low in the barrel for the last two weeks of June...

I swear we almost predicted this could be exploited when the 'pause' kicked in

Up to three people were caught at the New Zealand border last week trying to get into this country without declaring they had initially come from Melbourne, Victoria.

It is understood they planned to attend a funeral while in this country.

Director general of health Ashley Bloomfield said the three arrived in Auckland from Melbourne via Sydney.

This was a breach of the lockdown restrictions and the pause on the travel bubble.

Yet NZ repeats the same mistakes again and again. The whole quarantine system was setup to prevent this happening.

They were caught at the border and shipped to MIQ - the article fudged this a bit earlier in the day, but has been updated to be clearer. To me it sounds like there are suitable checks in place.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's message to transtasman bubble breakers

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says there are consequences for people who break the transtasman bubble rules, even if they don't end up being fined or jailed.

A group of three people from Melbourne have been put into managed isolation in New Zealand after misleading officials about where they were travelling from.

It is understood the trio, who are resident in Australia, planned to attend a funeral during their trip to this country.

They drove to Sydney and then flew to Auckland, and were caught at the border after trying to deceive officials. They will now have to pay for their 14-day MIQ stay.

One could suggest true checks in place, would have stopped them getting on the plane in the first place. Not having someone likely need dob them in and become our burden.

SG also starting to rope in local cases, though still a way to go - ave 5/day in last 3 days, down from ~23/day two weeks ago

HK got their numbers down earlier (3 local cases in last 14 days, but one from an unknown source)

Press release:

A South Island hub and 17 new ultra-low temperature freezers will help further prepare New Zealand for the ramp up of the vaccination programme in the second half of this year, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says.

The new freezers arrived in New Zealand on 27 May. They’re currently being tested and accredited and will be ready for use by the end of this month.

“This is the next step in getting the country ready to deliver 50,000 vaccinations a day at the peak of our vaccination campaign,” Chris Hipkins says.

“Five of the new freezers have arrived in Christchurch, adding to the two already there, to ensure we have a second hub with capacity to deliver vaccines across the South Island and lower North Island.

“The 12 remaining ultra-low temperature freezers will be based in Auckland, bringing the total number to 26 freezers – 23 operating and three as back-up – across New Zealand.

“This will be enough storage for four million doses at any one time.”

Having two vaccination hubs and back-up freezers prepares New Zealand for any potential risks, such as earthquakes or other major disruptions to the roll-out.

“This is the largest and most complex exercise the health system in New Zealand has ever undertaken and we want to ensure we are prepared for anything.”

All shipments of the Pfizer vaccine currently go to Auckland, but as larger shipments start to arrive they will be flown direct to both Auckland and Christchurch for packing and distribution. The freezers cost up to $20,000 each.

I would expect 14 day MIQ and an invoice for it minimum.

If i were handling the case they would be straight out of MIQ and to the airport to be deported with a 2 year ban.

Intentionally misleading is a criminal offense on border documentation.

I had my first jab a week ago.

I’ve now rung the number given for the purposes of booking the second appointment. 132 times.

No answer.

I’ve sent email to the address given as a backup. Unanswered.

No idea what to do now really.

I don't understand how you weren't booked in at the time. Did you refuse?

It's a requirement to get the 2nd appointment booked at the time of the 1st jab, which will also typically be written on your vaccination card at the same time as well.

In your situation I would just wait until day 22 (or the soonest day after that you are available), then just show up at a vaccination center...

They seem to be keen to prioritize 2nd doses, and it is likely that they will fit you in without fuss when you let them know your 2nd dose is due, but you were unable to make an appointment.

Perhaps attempt one additional phone call in a weeks time, but making hundreds of calls it too onerous on you.

Note that while a 3 week gap is recommended (+1 day to avoid time of day issues), if that is not possible, various sources including the USA CDC state that anything up to 6 weeks is acceptable. Even if the 6 week period is missed they say there is no need to restart the series.

In addition there is some (limited) evidence that the vaccine produces more antibodies with a spacing of between 9 & 12 weeks than the recommend 3 weeks:

https://www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n18

https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityaray/2021/05/14/study-finds-12-week-gap-between-pfizer-covid-19-vaccine-dose-generates-35-times-higher-antibody-response/?sh=5fd1d205a6a3

Also, after day 15, the first dose alone is around 89% effective, so you are fairly well protected from then on, with the 2nd dose providing a small boost on top of that.

Just put this stuff at the end to make it clear that if you can't get your 2nd vaccine at the recommended time (say you get turned away as a walk in), it isn't a massive deal.

My second dose wasn't booked when I got my first dose on Monday (Auckland). They took contact details, and said they would contact me nearer the time to remind me to book, I think they verbally asked how I wanted to be contacted and I nominated email.
