KrazyKid:

Sound to me that the government is going to make masks compulsory at Lvl 2 and above.
Also they are planning to make scanning/signing in with QR codes/logs compulsory for some venues at Lvl 2 and above.

I take the post cabinet announcement as the pre-warning to get people use to the idea.
I'd expect to here this is a the new rules next week after they get  a report.

If Aussie can do it, we can.
It's a good idea.

If there had been CT in Wellington last week our L2 would have been totally insufficient to stop spread. With our incredibly low vaccination rates there is just no model that would stop spread.

Even with the requirement for those who were contacts at the locations of interest to self isolate, there is no requirement for household members to self isolate. We know from plenty of data that there is a pretty good chance they would spread it to household members. The differences in how different retailers and businesses are handling L2 is also huge, ranging from business as usual with zero changes at many places, to Domino's Pizza in Lower Hutt which is really taking things to the next level. All staff are wearing masks, and they have the entry coned off with everybody being told to wait outside and a single person at a time being allowed to enter to pick up pizzas.

With the lack of social distancing and no real increase in QR scanning it is pretty clear that any mythical beliefs that still exist of a "team of 5 million" are history. We now have a deeply divided country with growing numbers every day who simply don't care and don't see Covid as a risk because we got it drummed into us that we beat Covid and won and that we're the best in the world. Once people anywhere in society have the mentality that they are the best and that they are invincible it's normally when things implode.

I'm not convinced at this point that we'll leave L2 tonight even though we've had no cases. While it does seem highly probable now that we've avoided any infection here, and the fact L2 is so poor had their been any further CT you'd assume further cases would have shown up by now, but the simple fact is testing numbers are simply way too low.

I think they'll chance it - they have a handful of outstanding tests and the wastewater hasn't thrown anything up yet.

Agree though that we are basically a sitting duck and a delta outbreak here is a matter of when, not if.

The thing that will save us is the speed of the vaccine rollout.

The pause to the full bubble will be huge, that will add probably weeks to our border. When it resumes there should be more measures such as pre flight tests, etc. I still favour priority vaccines for travellers so that all green flights are vaccinated flights. If there are economic benefits to the bubble why not support it that way.

I don't really believe that.  There's a small group of antivax/anti-lockdown "but my freedom" dick-heads, the rest (low scanning rates etc) is pure complacency and apathy.  If there'd been CT from the Wgtn case, then that would have brought everybody to attention - but sure I agree, it might have been too late.

Scanning should be made compulsory.  While our sports teams still get treated as heroes when they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, our covid response team won't get to enjoy our famous kiwi praise for those coming home with second prize.

And the usual dicks with more money than sense will just book a weekend in Sydney so they can ump the queue and get the vaccine ahead of their group.

Interesting article from Bloomberg:

The Last—And Only—Foreign Scientist in the Wuhan Lab Speaks Out

(TLDR : She's not buying in to the CT that the virus escaped from the lab and was "covered up")

But preflight testing would not have prevented the Australian traveler from coming here. He would have presented his negative test result at check-on on the Friday. Mandating it for every bubble traveler long term is something that carries significant pros and cons, and will result in people having to realistically spend a minimum of 3 full days in Australia so they can be tested there. Lots of people have only been going over for quick 1-2 day trips to minimise the risks of being caught, and that will no longer be possible.

Preflight testing can really only work as a temporary measure to get people back who are trapped there right now, and presumably that will be similar to Melbourne a few weeks ago with a requirement to self isolate and then be tested once back.

I'm aware of one person who flew to Australia just to be vaccined since they couldn't get their jab here. I'm not sure where they are right but the current pause is potentially a slight obstacle for getting back for their 2nd jab.

Yes, I get that and Ive always been miffed about pre flight testing but its something I guess. Small measures do add something. Perhaps its better suited to when there is no apparent CT. We all want the rollout to go faster, so lets vaccinate bubble travellers. Yes, you need to book, and get the second test but after that its a free ride, bubble wise

The problem is that scanning is still not a magic bullet. You can scan in somewhere but nobody knows who you are. They can send you a warning to isolate, but have zero way of enforcing that.

The current app model is all about privacy, and IMHO should have at least allowed a way to share contact details with a venue when checking in to avoid so many venues who are still required to collect this data.

We're already seeing huge numbers of people in Wellington who received contact notifcations based on Bluetooth tracing, and I'm really surprised nobody (MoH/Hipkins/PM) had made a single mention of their standups, nor has anybody emphasised the importance of having this turned on.

In Aus as from yesterday, anybody can request AZ vaccine from a GP.

Of course *they sabotaged AZ, so I don't expect uptake will be high.

*they = Australian media - clickbait revenue > public interest

Testing numbers seem rather low for the Wellington region. Surely there must be more people with sniffles and scratchy throats than the numbers being tested?

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

'It's winter, it's just a cold bro... I never went near those places...' etc

They are now pleading for any type of niggle to get tested aka call healthline for advice rather than rock up. So unless they are giving that advice publicly and healthline overruling and advising not to bother unless you have been associated *shrug*

Very interesting article from the BBC News: Mixing Covid vaccines gives good protection, study suggests

That might speed things up in Aussie, cause don't they have both and are making the AZ themselves?

It should should certainly be great for the poorer countries who could now buy from whomever is offering the cheapest at the time.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
