morrisk:

Yes was impressed with Wellington mask wearing on public transport. I do not use buses but with grandchildren visiting it was a bus ride and the cable car - on both the bus and the cable car everyone was wearing a mask.

Yes people in Wellington seem to be doing the right thing. Also probably helped by people not wearing masks being given dirty looks. IMO if people have exceptions, when wearing a badge would help, similar to what they do overseas for people with hidden disabilities. NZ is a bit behind, possibly because historically NZ has not been a big public transport country due to the lack of it

Just seen that Melbourne has 7 new cases linked the removalists who were came from NSW as part of there work.
This is the Delta Variant.

They have just named an AFL game at the MCG as a exposure site with 2000 people that were in his seating area as close contacts.
There is also a supermarket named as an exposure site with a confirmed infection.

How long will it take to shut the bubble to Victoria again I wonder - this is Sydney all over again.
You would expect Victoria to act faster than NSW after the lessons they have recently learnt.

I am guessing some sort of tightening of restrictions again in Melbourne by the week and would not be surprised to see a sharp one week lockdown either.

VIC have traditionally been faster to use a lockdown/ stronger restrictions than NSW,

VIC doesn't need NSW for lessons, the disaster that was the "post code" lockdown in MEL in June last year are still very fresh...

Well I'm not sure of how the opening up travel by year end plan will go in Singapore, the idea of Hong Kong bubble has hit a bump in the road.

An announcement on the arrangement, previously known as the air travel bubble, was originally expected on Tuesday (July 13) but was scrapped at the last minute on Monday, The Straits Times understands.

There are concerns about the rising number of cases, deaths and patients in hospitals, even as large chunks of Malaysia including Selangor and KL are into its seventh week of total lockdown, and with the government boasting that a high number of people have been inoculated.

Nearly 11.8 million Malaysians have received at least one dose of the vaccine by Monday, or about 24.8 per cent of the population, said Health Minister Adham Baba. They included 11.3 per cent (3.68 million) who have received the full dosage.

Social media has been awash with video clips and pictures of bodies piling up in hospitals.

Batman:

one in 3 hospitalized is in ICU - AU

Compared to non-VOC SARS-CoV-2 strains, the adjusted elevation in risk associated with N501Y-positive variants was 59% (49-69%) for hospitalization; 105% (82-134%) for ICU admission; and 61% (40-87%) for death. Increases with Delta variant were more pronounced: 120% (93-153%) for hospitalization; 287% (198-399%) for ICU admission; and 137% (50-230%) for death. Interpretation: The progressive increase in transmissibility and virulence of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs will result in a significantly larger, and more deadly, pandemic than would have occurred in the absence of VOC emergence.

There's a reason for the high hospitalisation and ICU rate in Aus - where it's ~100% Delta variant in an almost completely immunologically naive population.

It appears from this study that as well as being far more transmissible, Delta variant is also significantly more deadly.

Just read a comment elsewhere saying that the implied case fatality rate of ~3% conflicts with observed CFR for delta variant in the UK of ~ 0.2%.

There's no conflict - that 0.2% CFR is with a very high (90%) of the most vulnerable part of community vaccinated.

As of now, vaccines are still very very effective.

This time last week ANZ announced Summer singapore demand expansion. 5x out of CHC. Playing down on Singapore announcing it.. but a little coincidental.

Interestingly, Air NZ has also announced a service between Christchurch and Singapore operating five times a week from November 30, which may be an indication of where the airline believes future travel bubbles may open. However, the airline is playing down any speculation of a return to relative normality.

yeah, it is rather a larger spin on a remark

"In the meantime I want to encourage anyone with concerns about the potential of a pause to quarantine-free travel, to organise to get home as soon as possible."

There will be a few with time and money up their sleeves with no concerns

empacher48: Saliva testing now available to all frontline border workers instead of nasal swabs…

Saliva testing for border workers

Posting the press release for completeness:

All frontline border workers who are required to be regularly tested for COVID-19 will soon be able to choose regular saliva testing as a full replacement for nasopharyngeal testing, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins has announced.

Saliva testing will be expanded as an option for all those on a regular testing cycle under the Required Testing Order. This will start with those on a 7-day testing cycle from mid-August, and be expanded over several months to include the rest of the estimated 13,000 estimated active border workers.

“The Ministry of Health’s advice is that saliva testing is an increasingly viable and reliable method for public health surveillance purposes,” Chris Hipkins said.

“The workers - many of whom are on rotating shifts - will also be able to undertake the testing directly at their workplaces, making access even easier. This will help boost uptake of saliva testing as a testing option for those who have to do it regularly.

“We’ve had very little COVID-19 in New Zealand, however a single missed infection could have a significant impact on the community.

“Regular saliva testing can shorten the time between someone contracting the virus and it being picked up meaning we can get on top of managing it much more quickly.

“Extending saliva testing to more border workers is a key part of our overall approach to help keep our borders, and frontline border workers and their families safe.

“By offering this an alternative, we’re helping border workers who have frequent testing and find having a swab inserted in the nose very uncomfortable and hard to tolerate.”

A prototype to test the processes for regular saliva testing is currently underway in Canterbury. This has helped to inform the expansion from here, including around border worker shift patterns, preferences and what will encourage uptake.

“The initial concept has been adapted so that in most cases workers won’t need to be tested outside of their shift patterns and they can get the job done at work. If they’re on leave, we’re also aiming to make participation easier and less demanding,” Chris Hipkins said.

“The Ministry of Health has provided assurance that the selected saliva testing provider has the capacity, flexibility and experience to provide this service from mid-August as part of our complementary testing regime within our broader surveillance programme.

“Public health, science and clinical advisors will continue to monitor and regularly review our approach as we undertake a phased roll out of saliva testing to border workers.

“Saliva testing is increasingly emerging as a key part of the toolkit in New Zealand and abroad.”

Just received:

Further advice is being sought from public health officials following seven new positive cases of COVID-19 in Victoria today, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says.

“There are also a growing number of locations of interest that are of concern, including a sports stadium on Saturday and several pubs,” Chris Hipkins said.

“Public health officials are currently reviewing the situation in Victoria and will provide advice to me in due course.

“In the meantime I want to encourage anyone with concerns about the potential of a pause to Quarantine Free Travel, to organise to get home as soon as possible.

“You will still need a negative pre-departure test within 72 hours of departure, to complete a health declaration confirming you have not been at a location of interest and the Nau Mai Rā travel declaration.

“I will provide an update once I receive further information from public health officials.”

I just can't believe we still have this Australasian bubble open, and we continue to play Russian Roulette. Their is little net economic benefit except for airlines and airports IMO.  We risk billions if we have a lockdown, and years of debt for our younger generations to pay back. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a case in NZ this week or next.
