Nawww... Seymour wants publicity (which he's been very successful with since the last election campaign). If the Govt had said it was planning to open up next year, he would have wanted it this year. If the Govt subsequently says it will open up next year, he will claim it was all his idea.

One thing is for sure - ACT's Seymour did not provide an estimate of ICU and hospital impact and total number of deaths we can expect from his strategy. Just politics by the looks.

I've had contact with some extended family members recently. Two said not sure if they will get it, another laughed and said no way. The former two haven't been following it. A colleague who says nah. A mate who says dunno. They arent all anti-vaxxers (maybe the BIL is) but I just get the feeling that as we arent being bombarded with Covid news daily, that the lack of knowledge means that for some it's last years news. Makes me feel that the 77% who will and 23% who wont thats been quoted, is probably right. When we get CT here some will see the need

This doesn't surprise me. I've always believed that the concern around "anti-vaxxers" is misplaced - they're a tiny minority of nutters who aren't worth worrying about.

The bigger concern is those who are indifferent. The average user of this forum is probably well educated, connected with the world around them, and socialises with other like minded people. Unfortunately that isn't representative of wider society of which a large proportion don't know, don't understand, or just can't be bothered.

I am happy that a plan has finally been announced. Offering the carrot of reduced restrictions for vaccinated travellers may assist in reducing vaccine hesitancy. It is not without some risk, but neither is life in general. I think it may be the first step to get people used to having freedoms attached to your vaccination status. I don’t have a problem with that.

This afternoon had a txt from my doctors surgery where I had my first vaccination saying that recommendation was now for an 8 week gap rather than 3. They had provided the new appointment time for the 8 week gap and asked that I just reply Y if I was OK with the new time.

This is what I was recommended as well. Honestly I'm not sure if me and my fiancée should or should not. I'm more of the opinion of I want to get it over and done with and protect ourselves against others. If there's more protection by delaying it doesn't this also carry the risk of not getting supply when people go for the second shot? Doesn't this also cause more hesitation because people are looking at stats of our vaccination uptake?

I am probably thinking about this too hard and worrying too much but I really just want to get my second shot in the 3 weeks I originally set and just leave it at that.

The way I look at it is the reward V risk equation.

In my opinion the reward (gains) of having a longer time between each shot is far outweighed by the risk of the Delta variant getting loose in the country. Booster shots will take care of any reduction in efficacy through not having an extended time between the two doses. There is really no back up option if you decide to take the longer gap between the two doses.

As far as I am concerned the best option for any of us in New Zealand in the current circumstances is to have both doses at around the 3 to 4 week time frame. The gains from extending the time between doses isn't great enough.

We need to get two doses into as many people as possible as soon as possible to give us the greatest protection possible against any variant that will come through the border.

Agree. The risk is somewhat mitigated by a vaccinated population. I feel that if that step proceeds, QR scanning needs to be mandatory at most public gatherings, supermarkets, movies, shops, rugger matches, 7/11's etc, pretty much everywhere. A lack of scanning when we have no CT isn't great, but a more open border means we have to shut that loophole down. Maybe only vaccinated at certain events? Yep, give human rights lawyers some work.

This will be a 5 year effort. Scanning can be a norm, no biggie.

I've spoken of that group previously. Not direct flagging them as A.V. But lumping them in the large proportion of people you see who aren't straight up marsbars commenting on the official releases online without levelled reasoning behind them.

You meet varied parties throughout the day. Sharing the news like today over a watercooler, gets mixed reactions. You hear 'that's good'. Some keen to get onto it, While others say they've been sitting on the invite for a while and aren't at all phased or in a hurry.

The non travelling camp that don't worry right now might find themselves in a spot of bother down the line when it comes to wait times for any sudden urgency. I await the narrow vision that is many of kiwis who can't see beyond our own sweet freedoms when the framework going live on the usual places and people complaining at the idea of digital proof and likelyhood of jabbed travel only hindering their freedoms.

Our success/luck in largely keeping Covid out of New Zealand particularly since the initial lockdown is also our achilles heal. The risk from Covid is seen as very low so there is no urgency to get vaccinated. There's plenty of misinformation about the vaccines plus there have been rare instance of issues with the likes of AZ. I don't think a lot of the population truly believe any of it but they want to see real life experiences first to prove or disprove this misinformation. This leads to let's see how it goes and if those around me who are vaccinated don't have any issues then I'll take the plunge.

What's happening in NSW is pretty damn good incentive to get vaccinated..

Also the government waving round the threat of early hard lockdowns has got to be an incentive also...

Vaccines in general and QR scanning should be mandated into law, just like seat belt wearing, all save lives. Yes there will be medical exemptions and there will be those who just wont, even with any form of penalty. But just like seat belt wearing it will take a small generational change and will become instinctive.

On a side note: What effect does or will climate change have on viruses and bacterium and fungi ? Will our heating up climate & planet cause viruses and bacterium and fungi to mutate into more harmful and virulent strains just so they can survive in a warmer environment?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

NSW has recorded two more deaths and 345 new local COVID-19 cases overnight. At least 60 of those cases were infectious in the community.

I have an uneasy feeling about this...the last time the govt was talking about hard lockdowns, we went into one pretty soon after.

It's been fairly quiet on the lockdown talk front, until the last couple of days...and now we are hearing it multiple times a day. Are they implying that we have some potential for leaks at the border? Softening us for the blow of an inevitable community cluster and lockdown? Maybe I am just paranoid.
