I always thought the media coverage stated that even fully vaccinated people can get infected and can get sick, but that the symptoms / repercussions of being sick when vaccinated were significantly reduced.

A "living with it" strategy would need significant data on the hospitalisation and/or mortality rates of vaccinated vs non vaccinated and even then, I'm still not convinced that we would live with it.

I don't think we have a choice. Everyone vaccinated, booster (I see Israel is doing 3rd doses now) and whatever other things arise in the next few months. Ive heard anti-virals mentioned, not sure what that is, maybe an inhaler that can protect you from inhaling the virus? Sorta like washing hands but in the nasal passage? Perhaps the booster will be better with Delta. Lots of things to learn still

But on average how infectious are fully vaccinated, infected - but asymptomatic people?

I always thought that infected meant its in my nasal passages and lungs. But hopefully if I was fully vaccinated, life goes on as normal as the vaccine is protecting my lungs. As distinct from Covid just being in my nose and nowhere else (as I'm vaccinated)

If vaccinated you'll have some level of antibodies in your blood that bind to and inactivate the virus directly, and your immune system is primed to react quickly to produce more of those antibodies and activate blood cells that move to and absorb/kill your infected cells (which are doomed anyway) before "complete" viruses (virions) burst out.  The "virus" when replicating inside your body cells is not like the images of the C-19 virus, and until the virions form, then it's not viable outside the human host cell. It hijacks your DNA to make copies of it's RNA, and scavenges other material in your cells to assemble virions when that infected cell is still alive. I'm guessing that after you've recovered in "historical" non-infectious cases, traces of viral RNA - not able to infect any more - inside your immune cells that absorbed them until gradually those cells are replaced - and that's what's being detected by PCR (not "virions) weeks after you're no longer infected and infectious. I am not a virologist.  Don't take that as gospel.

If unvaccinated, apart from having no antibodies to fight covid instantly, your immune system isn't primed to react quickly.  That's a problem, the virus will replicate more quickly - releasing more virus each time a cell is infected, each of those infect other cells, by the time your immune system finally kicks in you're likely to have a far higher viral load, far more damaged tissue, and be much more sick.

I did read that Delta tends to infect more readily in the upper respiratory tract, could be an additional reason why it's more contagious.

May as well almost ignore the "delta" name now, almost all cases are delta - it's won the fight taking over from it's ancestor(s).

^ Very interesting headline and it could cause some significant issues down the line; i.e. vaccinated people are still capable of getting COVID-19 and spreading it without showing any issues. Be interesting to see how the world reacts to that.

!? Why would there be any reaction.  Its long been known that asymptomatic people can transmit the virus, including asymptomatic people who have been fully vaccinated.  In countries with high levels of vaccination, the most people infected have been vaccinated and much of that is transmission between vaccinated people.

You might know but the general public might find that difficult to understand. Most people don't know what a vaccine is, which is why we have so much misinformation

Last major lockdown there were a handful of threads/posts about positive things about the lockdown.  Here are my two for this particular outbreak/lockdown:

  1. Shock vaccine doubters/fence-sitters into action and get the vaccination rate and percentage up
  2. Pressure on the government to make a decision on what 'living with covid' is going to be.

So I posted in the thread about how I went to the supermarket on Saturday and there were multiple people shopping in pairs and many not wearing masks or wearing them poorly? Someone with Covid showed up 24 minutes after I left. It's now a LOI.

Both Westgate Countdowns are closed today.

Aren't the supey's enforcing masks inside? The rules in my New World seem to be obeyed 100%, I'm surprised if those shoppers in the epicentre are not caring that much, if anything I'd expect the other way around

No, the staff aren't enforcing it. Nor the designated shopper idea, etc. Shoutout to the idiot couple I saw yelling across the double-wide aisles about fruit and vege and pulling down their masks to do it.

Was at the small Pak'n'Save Tauranga Crossing yesterday. Yes people were mask wearing but social distancing, what is that when the isles are just wide enough for only two trolley's side by side.

When I reached the check out there were X's on the floor. I was next in line and stood on my X. When the elderly couple in front of me left I moved forward and loaded the conveyor belt. As I moved my now empty trolley through I placed the checkout grocery divider down and the next person behind me was right up my A*** and started loading their groceries on the belt. I stated to the checkout lass "no social distancing here?" she said "what can I do".

She can politely remind that customer to step back to their X?

You mean something polite and to the point like "MOVE BACK YOU F***ING IDIOT AND STAND ON THE F***ING SPOT UNTIL THE PERSON FRONT HAS GONE" or words to that effect.    That's what they deserve.

That might work! :-) Yes they deserve it, whether it be slack or stupid. Its hardly a secret. If it was me, I'd be happy with being reminded, and Id apologise, but if the checkout person can ask the offender, then call Security if needed.
