Batman:

send the ship back to where it came from?

Well last port was Dunedin, it was made in Italy, flagged as Bermudan, probably ultimately headed for the ship breakers yards in Bangladesh

Visiting that last port might be much sooner than expected - might be the fate of many of these monstrosities - even as their very next voyages.

It was chartered and boarded in Melbourne, Australia.

[edit] - Also, once the bulk of New Zealanders that want to come home are repatriated, there is little point in airlines continuing to run frequent passenger flights. This may act as a better barrier to travel than the self isolation requirements.

You’ll find that almost all flights internationally to and from NZ carry a lot of freight. Exports and imports will still will be required to be transported. So even if there aren’t many passengers on each flight there will be a lot of freight to be moved.

In the A320 we usually carry at least one can of freight across the Tasman, even with numerous wide-bodies and dedicated freighters.

But yes the number of passenger flights across the Tasman and internationally will drop, but they won’t completely stop.

Well that's unfortunate timing.  We can't send it back there - cruise ships are now banned from Aussie ports.

Spain and France have both instigated increased lockdowns with all but essential service closed.

I think we are just a small matter of time away from seeing similar complete lockdowns in NZ, especially once our flu season gets underway.

Back to its country of registration?

In all seriousness I think we are ethically stuck with it. Cross your fingers and hope it is not infected...

I think a ship with no next destination would be moored in the current host country.

Yep.  I think it's going to be closer than that (flu season).  I'd be very surprised if we're not in lockdown with schools etc closed and public gatherings banned by the end of the month.

I would expect any shutdown of schools to likely align with the Easter term break so that two weeks worth are already accounted for.

This morning I bought a deep freezer from harvey norman, just 140L but the main fridge and bar fridge freezers arent very big. When I collected it, 4 others were awaiting collection too.

I filled it at Pak n Save Lower Hutt, basics like milk, bread, meat, ice cream etc, plus dry staples.

It was pretty busy for 9.30am sunday but I only spotted a few others with similar baskets. Pretty calm overall. After the 7th and 8th cases were announced my wife drove past pak n save Petone and said there was a large queue for trolleys.

It is going to get a lot worse over the next two weeks.

Here in the UAE they moved the term dates and brought spring break forward a month. I'd expect NZ to do similar.

It's going to have to shift from Akaroa.  They can't anchor or tie up there, these monstrous things leave their engines running 24/7 and hold position using engines/thrusters etc, destroying the seabed by stirring up silt.  More than 100 of them a year.  I don't think Chch facilities are back up and running, Dunedin is the nearest port with facilities - they probably don't want it either.  For humanitarian reasons - if the suspect case is positive - they need to get everyone off the ship and into quarantine ASAP - but I doubt there's anywhere in the SI that could handle it.

Agree totally. I think I'll be doing all my work from home by month end as well. I've already decided to ditch public transport (I cycle a few days a week already) and practice social distancing by not going to any form of gathering or having close contact with others - 1.5mtr distance.

The scary part is that this may go on for a year or more according to some experts, even 2 years. - we are currently in the very early stages of this pandemic.
