Oblivian:

The PM seems to have spawned the phrase on the 6th. And it has been run with. The later the most important.

Some of this is to be expected as we see close contacts and family members test positive, but some of these are still what we call unlinked or mystery cases. These matter because so long as we don’t know where a case has come from, we cannot tell if we have other chains of transmission in the community that we haven’t isolated yet. That’s a cause for concern

..

But, as Dr Bloomfield said, what we’ve asked for is basically to date-stamp those mystery cases, because if they were very, very early on, then, look, we accept that there were a large number of exposure events early on. But if you’re getting them later on with infection onset later on, then they are more risky to us.

I wonder how they handle infected people who are "known to the police", and have neither the will, nor motivation, to help with contact tracing.

Just watching ABC. Surprised we hadn't heard more on it on main news.

Us mandate for Frontline and private companies with 100 or more to require vaccination or weekly tests

Covers about 100M. Seems president had had enough of the children in the hospitals and numbers dropping off.

CDC quantifies protection against delta from vaccination:

"Greater than" because some partial and fully vaccinated were combined.  For NZ, it's reasonable to assume that protection from vaccination would be higher as the Pfizer vaccine almost certainly has higher VE than the average in the US.

Purely a 'feels' question, but does anyone else here think there's been a bit of a shift in tone and some possible expectation management in the last few days?

Before I said I would have been 100% sure we'd go down to a stricter L3 but now I'm not that confident anymore.

Hard to say, I’ve given up taking any reports in our media about what’s happening with much truth. It’s all about the clicks. It seems this morning it’s all about fear and very little in the way of hope.

Very similar to what the 1pm “breifings” are about. Stir up some more fear into the masses and it’ll keep the poll ratings up.

Im not sure leaving L4 can be considered right now, or even consdered recently. Lockdown came into effect with just one case. Yes, it was known that there will be other cases out there somewhere. But the same applies now. Dailies are low, but if we get 12 a day, thats many out there that will turn up in a week, and what we are seeing now is that many of these are infected form unknown sources, and we are adding LOI's still. Its a long tail, and until you can have a lot of confidence that there are no cases, thats a risk. If very low cases and all are easily accounted for and none infectious in the community then yes.

Aside from todays numbers which Ive just seen, its playing with fire to gamble on a drop. Then you're back to Day One again. Testing has plummeted too. Thats not to say the recent days of low cases are false, but they might be a bit understated. Aucklanders need to hammer the testing, as low case numbers on low tests wont convince anyone in hurry.

Unfortunately, with random cases popping up, I'm guessing it's either going to go on for weeks and weeks, or it's still being leaked from MiQ as per today's news of an MiQ worker catching it on Monday.

If I were the PM, and knowing we can't lockdown forever, I would day by x date, get fully vaccinated because we are removing all restrictions.

Yes, we don't want people to die. But we can't let businesses and livelihoods go bust and hence the country.

I think this method may motivate even higher rates of people getting vaccinated.

Just an opinion.

Not a good idea.

Committing to a date is worse than committing to a % vaccinated target to "open up".

We need to buy time - by keeping the lid on the Auckland outbreak.

Watch closely what happens in Australia over the next few weeks or month before following them down the no-exit street.

They have over 2000 cases today, 1600 in NSW / 450 in Melbourne - which will now follow the Sydney trajectory.

Maybe there's a constructive way to do it - "X% first doses by Y date and we can lock in a move down alert levels" might be an enticing way to get people in and jabbed.

There has to be some sort of comms shift though, because continual lockdown extensions make any sort of planning - business or personal - almost utterly impossible. They did well to communicate that we'd be at L4 for at least two weeks previously, but we are days away from a possible move and none the wiser about how it might pan out.

I don't see the harm in giving an indication now if they know it isn't going to happen.

Of course if Auckland fails rest of country may object strongly to joining them, so I expect Auckland will have to wait a while longer.

While people complain about MIQ places, recently a professional golfer hit the news on not being able to come back and forth.
I have to choose between income and family.
MIQ is clearly completely swamped then add Olympic numbers, we have Paralympics too.

Then this outbreak, and we have to take spaces for isolation that are clearly not coping with the extra requirements of isolation they are not resourced for.
If you can't even feed people or provide beds or bedding in rooms not meant for a family, that's not encouraging people to come forward.
Middlemore does not want to receive people who should be transferred, see nothings changed from pre Covid there.
Not had many good experiences there with family and myself, though some nurses who tell you how you are being fobbed off are great.

So why do you not fill up all the MIQ places to the brim, now we know why you need extra spaces and room spacing.

Wil see details tomorrow , we might get lucky and find links are being found. Here's hoping.

@Fred99,

To add, the date I would give would be one that gives people ample time to get fully vaccinated.

It wouldn't be a date next week or next month. Perhaps by the end of the year. I'm hoping under 12s could get jabbed by then too according to news from the US.

If you haven't been vaccinated by then when you have no reason not to, I'm sorry, you can stay in your cave forever.

I'm no fan of the CCP in China, but at least when they say one needs to do something you can be sure people will follow.

You look at the US, Biden is mandating businesses and federal workers to get vaccinated.

It's only a matter of time before something similar, perhaps not to the same scale, happens here.
