Technofreak:

What sector do you work in? I'm not suggesting every sector should be saved BUT we do need a vibrant and diverse economy so that we can have a standard of living we all expect.

I don't know what you're aiming at here. We have more jobs than people almost. Hospo & tourism, two of the big areas affected, are typically low wage. I would say at the moment there are great opportunities for people to move out of low wage jobs.

This might not be popular, but I'm sick of people opening cafes & developers putting them in to the bottom of every new building. This does not build the economy & those workers would be beneficial somewhere else.

And those who don't wish to or are not capable of moving to other jobs? Cafes etc do add to the local and general economy.

Guess you've never driven through Greytown or Martinbourgh on a Saturday morning. Multiple cafes packed with people who drive over from Wellington and, wouldn't you believe, significantly add to the local economy.

JPNZ:

I think the problem more so than the proliferation of takeaway outlets is:

A. Humans are getting more and more lazy to the point where many can't even be bothered cooking a meal (hell, look at the rise of uber eats for those too lazy to even drive a car to the fast food outlet)

B. The huge rise in the price of healthy grocery type foods from supermarkets compared to cheap fast food stores.

Suppose that is a conversation for another thread though.

Point A. is valid, but I'm not buying point B. I can make a burger cheaper that I can buy one (and arguably tastier/healthier). It just takes effort, hence the validity of point A.

I think part of it is also the trend towards more people living alone. That makes it harder to justify cooking healthy meals.

RE: Zespri Covid

Well we do have a large group of growers in China who were illegally growing a Zespri variety wanting a sweet deal.
https://www.rnz.co.nz/programmes/the-detail/story/2018790587/managing-china-s-theft-of-nz-s-sungold-kiwifruit

Surely no connection.
Given SARS-Cov2 is popping up in Port Cities in China there is a potential for contaminated false positive in logistics chain, even handling sampling.
But their testing bodies and scientists would know this.

Taiwan has had problems with its produce exports to China recently for bug problems Taiwan can't verify,
so maybe something bigger going on re trade deal games.
Taiwan Pineapples. Japanese saved Taiwan Pineapple Growers.

Tell them you had your second shot two weeks ago and are currently at the peak of shedding killer t-cells through every pore in your body... then start to make like you are removing your mask....

Or that my 5G coverage has spiked, its now awesome!

On a serious note, I was at a hospital as my dear step father was dying. Had a break and a coffee with my brother in law. I asked if he was jabbed, he laughed, no way. A normal guy. I didn't bother as nothing will change.

100% Mike, I agree. But you also prefer lockdowns to vaccines, in which case these cafe's go under. Im not digging, as I respect your posts so much, but we are at a crossroads. We can lock down to protect lives (I have NO issue with that) or we can vaccinate to our max (cuts hospital beds and deaths by 98+%) and "hopefully", manage vaccinations AND lockdowns to match our health system. If its going well, ease up a tad or two and reassess. We cannot magic up our health system to match Covid, but we can manage (opening up AND lockdown) to get a result.

Tech is a big part of this obese thong. Xbox, PS, no more running outside cowboys and indians (probably banned now), climbing trees (OSH issue)

You can't blame obesity on Macca's. Modern humanity has many things that remove natural exercise. I play a par 3 golf course with mates and his kids, they are all on the cellphone. I visit family friends for tea, they are all on cellphone and iPads and Youtube.

I have taught at high decile, and low decile schools.  Obesity is a massive issue at low decile schools.

One of the main differences I noticed when I went from a decile 3 to a decile 10 was the lunches.  At the decile 3 it was packs of chips, 1.5 litre bottles of soda, pies etc.  At the decile 10, sushi, carrot sticks, leftovers (healthy), etc.

The decile 3 kids at lunch time were way more active than the decile 10 kids.

Soda and crap to eat is the cause of obesity in the poor communities in NZ and those poor communities are PI and Maori,

I can easily see that. Like my tech comment, it's quick and convenience. There are foodie programs on TV that show you can make kid friendly food cheaper. But we don't.

Ive spent a good amount of time in the US. The junior schools provide breakfast and lunch, the cost was low. Ok, sometimes lunch was pizza, but at least its done.

People who have Lifesytle choices Co-Morbidities. Should we continue to have restrictions becuase of them. Or "let them eat cake".

Yes we should continue with restrictions

This is a bordering on politics, ie the govt decides.

So people get killed on the highway. We don't stop people driving, we introduce policies like - education, raising driving age, lower blood alcohol level, police speed limit. Until you get an acceptable death rate.

So people die from flu. We don't lockdown, we vaccinate - not everyone, but certain people.

So suicide rate is high. We don't lock everybody under chemical restraint - we put money into mental health, and watch for a reduction in rate.

At some stage the govt will decide they have done all the can to prevent as many preventable everything - not just deaths but Hospitalizations, that they have enough health capacity to treat cancers and heart attacks and strokes.

Other govts have decided that no preventable deaths are needed to prevent, every govt have had different targets.

Note i am not the govt but I think this is how it works in 2021/22. Make no mistake - I'd rather they spend billions building hospitals than handing out free money, but I'm not the govt.

Im not sure what the point of your post was, but saying "So people get killed on the highway. We don't stop people driving" is minimising Mike's stance. I feel thats a poor response. I dont fully agree with Mike's stance, but if you check a couple hundred other countries, he has a VERY clear and valid point.

The mature discussion is the point where lockdowns and vaccinations meet, where lives are still saved.

No, its not bordering on politics, its about health and lives.

@tdgeek Ummm I am not sure I said I prefer lockdowns to vaccines. If I gave that impression I am sorry that was not my intention. Vaccines are a powerful weapon in the fight as are lockdowns and MIQs. It would be great if effective antiviral treatments can be found to add to the ammunition clip.
