Batman: I don't think it will get antivax to listen or change their minds. Literally over my dead body mentality.

Luckily true anti-vax people are quite rare. My understanding is that they will be far outnumbered by people who:

  • Intend to get vaccinated, just haven't got around to it yet.
  • Intend to get vaccinated, but have some kind of barrier to access like transport.
  • Are Hesitant, and don't want to be a first mover, but once they are the odd one out in their social group will jump onboard

etc.

It depends on how far into the cult they are. But yes it starts off like you say and if they get sucked into the cult of Donald Trump, end up like I say.

Tech is a big part of this obese thong. Xbox, PS, no more running outside cowboys and indians (probably banned now), climbing trees (OSH issue)

You can't blame obesity on Macca's. Modern humanity has many things that remove natural exercise. I play a par 3 golf course with mates and his kids, they are all on the cellphone. I visit family friends for tea, they are all on cellphone and iPads and Youtube.

Diet is the primary determinant in weight control rather than exercise, unless you're doing endurance training.

So a kid that has a vaguely, almost ok diet but is on Youtube/Xbox every waking hour except school an issue? When I was a kid I was outside everyday, barefoot, catching bees in my hand (wasps were a +1), finding wetas, climbing trees. Now, its school and Fortnite/Youtube/Minecraft.

Interesting change in dialog recently.

Interesting interview released this morning:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/the-90-project-pm-jacinda-ardern-on-a-no-jab-no-entry-scheme-and-childrens-vaccinations/GYRJDOOQOOH2EMSO7QQEGBUKDQ/

Softening of wording around if we are going to eliminate this outbreak.

Big change in stance from the PM from 6 weeks ago where she wasn't willing to have vaccine requirements for entry to venue, to actively exploring "no jab, no entry" options.

Also over the last few days we have a senior minister state that vaccine mandates are under active consideration too.

The change in wording in recent weeks has been a massive shift - people can sit there any try and justify the fact we haven't abandoned our "elimination strategy" but the simple fact is most of those people don't even have a clue what it really means both in an epidemiological sense and the more commonly used NZ specific definition.

Even now it's becoming clear that our elimination strategy which is a process which by definition has goal of zero tolerance towards new cases is being stretched - sure we may say we have a zero tolerance towards new cases, but if we're accepting that zero cases may no longer be possible (which is something even Bloomfield said on multiple occasions this week) it's a suttle shift that is confusing those who believe elimination = zero cases.

I've been too busy to watch most of the 1pm standups this week but I am finding the changing strategy and focus on 90% vaccination to be interesting. In recent weeks we've had several prominent people from the left (with the first being Bernard Hickey) come out and say we'll be a closed country for years but right now the PM is pretty much pledging no lockdowns once we get to 90% of the eligible population vaccinated, and is still pushing ahead with reopening plans. He backtrack on vaccine passports and restrictions for unvaccinated seems to be evidence that we're still on this path.

It's pretty clear now that even such high levels of vaccination aren't going to be enough to prevent endemic Covid, and it's also pretty clear we simply can't stay shut much longer. The problem is going to be one of expectation vs reality and I think many people who think the PM and govt have done a great job with Covid still don't comprehend that we're not going back to a pre Covid world in the coming months, and in 2022 possibly won't even be in a country that has the freedoms we did in early 2022 which is something Prof Skegg has waned of.

There is plenty of potential for backlash at the govt because we're either going to open up the country and people are going to catch Covid and die which will result in lots of anger from supporters, or we'll find in a few months that promises of reopening are suddenly put on hold which is simply going to create further turmoil and backlash due to the broken reopening pledges.

Singapore which have 82% of the population vaccinated is now putting in place strict restrictions after a surge of cases: Reuters: https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/singapore-tighten-covid-19-curbs-after-rise-infections-2021-09-24/

Norway which is at about the same level as Singapore is opening up today. I wouldn’t put a lot of money on them not having to go the route of Singapore within too long.

Read it all :-)

Our assessments of young people are almost certainly marred by our own faulty assessment of our own past character and abilities. Being aware of the bias might help us correct for it and avoid becoming the cliche of the grumpy oldster shaking her fist at "kids these days," and missing out on benefiting from the talent and insights of the young.

Fair point, but id guess that the exercise of yesteryear is not the same now. My Nana used to say they walked miles to school in bare feet. Later on, a long drive a flat tyre was fixed by putting grass in it. Maybe thats exaggerated. But living on PC's and tablets is todays exercise for many kids.

I'm guessing people were anyway..

Added to lvl3.

  • riding your motorbike — as long as you stay local and only ride with people in your bubble.

And travelling the boundary bought to the front rather than be buried. You know, just to make it clear you can't abuse your permit and all. Since I'm sure everyone looks for updates like these 0.o

If workers need to cross the Alert Level boundary

Business or work travel in and out of Auckland is strictly limited. The Alert Level boundaries are an important way to manage the risk of the virus spreading.

If your workers need to cross the Alert Level boundary, only allow those who need to travel to do so. You should put in place extra measures to keep your workers safe — including rotating shifts to minimise the number of people they come in contact with.

Yes, that seems to be the way of the world. It seems to show that restrictions first, THEN easing up is the way to go. Like all things Covid, great ideas become not so great, albeit with best intentions. Here, we may annoy the populous with restrictions, but ease them based on hospital usage, given that vaccines severely limit bad illness and deaths.

I wonder if the non believers are watching tonight's movie?

Contagion :)

Spoiler alert. Global pandemic, explains how much humans touch their faces and how it transfers. About clusters, and the only ways to stop it.

I wonder how many cases will come out of this little episode?

"The woman [who tested positive] told the Herald she was worried about wider virus spread in Auckland because she had been having symptoms for a few weeks"

Forty rooms, at least some with several people per room intermingling throughout L4.  How many have now left and spread out into the community?

Guess that is one way to manage an emergency housing facility.

My friend suggested something today.

If the whole world would isolate for 1 month last year we'd be rid of this. But nah humans

Incidentally, re the Middlemore Hospital covid positive patient who spend several hours the same ward as several other, including the 91 year old man.

Has it ever been announced if any of the three other patients (or hospital staff) have subsequently tested positive?

A Google search yields lots of articles from the 5th - 7th of Sep, but it seems to have gone very quiet since then.

Correcto. I've touched on a few times that we're doomed for that very reason. Lack of global unity and rolling points in the fight.

I was somewhat astonished to read an article today in which a woman was quoted as saying she had been told - and had believed - that the Covid vaccination was "Satanic" and that's why she hadn't had it.

Just how do you deal with that?!
