MikeB4:heavenlywild: ^Agree.
We basically patted ourselves on the back for 18 months only for the world to come back and laugh at us.
We've done well but we didn't make the most of it due to the vaccination stroll out. End of story.
Why would the world be laughing at us?
They aren't.

I don't think a political PR piece inserted into the two largest print media outlets is a high bar that's for sure.
It's been a constant thing since the start of the pandemic, opinion pieces claiming that "it's just the flu", that an elimination strategy would fail, that an elimination strategy would be crippling to the economy, that without tourism we'd all be starving..
Now - "we have to open up immediately" when that's very clearly about the dumbest thing we could do.

the decision to let about 300,000 people go back to their places of work when Auckland’s still getting 15-30 cases a day in the community is a turning point in the government’s approach to this pandemic.
The 'turning point' in NZ is vaccination. After that is a measured progression out of the various levels of lockdown. What do all the critics want NZ to do? Stay locked down longer? Or do we gradually move out of lockdown as vaccination rates increase? Going forward are we allowed to change the strategy on the fly to cope with a changing situation?

I love that the organisation that wrote it thinks $25 is a genuine incentive. It gives it that real "here peasants" energy.
It's about what the last benefit increase was, so I think it's fitting in with what is considered compassionate here at a government level too.

Show me the bit in that piece where it says that we have to open up before we get more people vaccinated?

Did you even read the piece or just trash it because you don't like Sir John Key? He doesn't say anywhere we should open immediately, and quite frankly that's not a line I've seen any mainstream media push since very early on in the pandemic.

However, a systematic review identified incentive-based interventions as among the least successful measures for increasing vaccine uptake.

When I get to a sentences such as:
The only urgency we’ve seen for months is an enthusiasm to lock down our country, lock up our people and lock out our citizens who are overseas.
Then it becomes pretty clear that it's a political hit-piece from a very shallow thinker.
And a lie.
Instead, reassure people that living with the virus is possible, as long as you're vaccinated. Take positive actions like funding Pharmac to invest in therapies proven to help fight the virus, build up our hospital capacity and workforce, use saliva testing for Covid, subsidise home-testing kits for Covid and order booster shots now.

Distilling New Zealand's vaccination efforts to a "Fear Campaign".
A big win for antivax messaging that they are the brave and true.
Disparaging those who got vaccinated due to sensible messaging as giving into fear.
Own Goal Scored.
Some is not new, and actually happening as relaxed storage rules and vaccine supply allows.
Positive events have been supported around Pacifica and Maori Health providers for their community to expand inclusiveness.
Communities supported to do all sorts of things to create vaccination events as we get capacity.

Lots of armchair wisdom here. I'm surprised there is still any Delta around at all, since we all know the government follows this thread for advice.

heavenlywild: I think Ardern rolling out Hendy was a mistake and people are sick and tired of the same old fearmongering.
That was a huge PR mistake. Then you have Sir John Key coming in with some pragmatism which makes last Thursday's "stunt" look even worse.
If you're referring to the economist who works as a consultant to foreign banks and somehow managed to get his opinion published as a front page hit piece on Hendy, a highly qualified and awarded expert in his field, then I think you're dreaming.
You think Key's article is "pragmatic" - then you're delusional.
