Scott3:Now we have:

  • level 3
  • level 3 step 1
  • level 3 step 2
  • level 3 step 3

In my mind we should have just gone with

  • level 3
  • level 2.9
  • level 2.8
  • level 2.7 (or 2.5)

i think rules matched to levels are gone. levels are not useful other than to reflect how much community transmission (but then where does level 4 sit as govt has said not going back to level 4).

we're at check the website in the morning to see what's allowed in your region.

new level suggestion:

level 1 - no community transmission

level 2 - there is community transmission somewhere

level 3 - there is community transmission right here

level 4 - find your own hospital

Opening up? This is not about opening up. Its about eliminating (to reduce hospital use) while we vaccinate up to the 90% (which will also reduce hospital use). If and when we meet that vaccination target, lockdown can be eased. Opening up is what is planned after vaccinations are at the level they need to be, AND there is some form of vaccination ID so that when you fly or buy or watch or eat, you are in the company of the vaccinated.

As for hospitals getting full, it peaked at 40 ICU in use, its currently 30. They are adding more ICU capacity as we speak (read that a few days ago)

This outbreak of which 97% of all the cases are not vaccinated leaves us using 30 ICU. Its not out of control ICU wise at this point or close to it.

ok so we're not opening up until we get to 90%

that's what i was after

can someone confirm this target?

I wonder if a mobile vax bus is an option? Especially for any problem suburbs. Community leaders have been mentioned a lot but Maori and Pasifika still seem to be struggling. They did door to door testing (which kicked up cases, maybe its time for door to door jabs.

Buses have been used for a week or two.

Handle9: his approach seems to be working in NSW. Victoria has an approach closer to NZs and that seems to be less effective in driving vaccinations although that could be a result of their outbreak being a bit later than NSW.

Exactly. And again, why are we not using rapid testing for essential workers and border crossers? NSW have it in their tool kit.

If appeasing people wasn't what IS occuring, Auckland would have remained in lvl4, fines and incarcerations' would occur for lack of mask or misuse of a mask etc and the rest of NZ would have stayed at lvl 2 with no concessions. Pretty naiive to state its not about appeasing people. Of course it is. Instead of being decisive, its about appeasing people until we reach some mystery figure, which correct me if I am wrong, is "around 90%"?

It is very much about appeasing. Essentially it is keeping Auckland in lockdown until those lagging our vaccination rates get with the programme !

One thing I think is totally under emphasised is the use of mask and their efficacy in the reduction of viral load, no mask is 100%, but if vaccinated and wearing a mask, the chances of a low viral load (dose) are much much greater.

Stick to the basics but explain why they are so important and show data to back that up and then hopefully Vax rates go up and the need for handing out fines maybe largely eliminated, but I still think there should be a fine given those essential workers (and or public) not wearing a mask anywhere in public where either the social distancing is so small it increases the chance of a high viral load or indoors where Aeresol per cubic of air means not wearing a mask correctly also increased the chance of a high viral load for other people who do not have covid. In other words, stop being flapping selfish and or naive when in public or indoors, especially people being paid to work. if you cannot work without a mask on, then you should be on a benefit imo. (good luck with that given how hard it is to claim anything off WINZ, yet the Govt is handing out billions for a medical related issue for wage subsidy).

ok so "come back later, opening soon."

that's fine it sounds like hospitals won't be filling up anytime soon.

Oops, yep, my mistake there. Not trying to recover my error, but I hope they are going door to door, and not parking and waiting, maybe I better quickly read K's link!

Doesnt say, but three buses at up to 300 a day each more buses to come, they should be hammering it now

Hehe thumbs up!

Hospitals? We need hospitals? I thought we had hospitals? lol

on a serious note,

Clearly they left it way too late, but I do wonder where they are getting the extra ICU staff from?

Did anyone in the media ask what the current R0 is under level 3? I suspect that outdoor meeting will increase it a bit, some  people will take liberties or not follow the rules. Do people need to meet in public outdoor spaces, or will people be meeting in back gardens etc, which may be tiny?

tdgeek: but I hope they are going door to door

I wish they would just buy a shed load of rapid tests and literally do a Ch and go door to door testing, while they are there issue fines for those people who have friends and family visiting, oh wait, thats allowed now, but only out doors. I have zero faith people will keep their gatherings outdoors without any legal repercussions to motivate that to be the case.

without question they will, like all appeasements, people will push the boundaries. Start locking people up or taking a good chunk of their coin and donating it to the people left with long covid due to their stupidity. Yes the definition of "outdoor" does not in the slightest have the same effect on viral load from one outdoor setting ie open air to being out the back in a gazebo or indoor outdoor zone.

Did I hear the PM say that vaccinations alone won't be enough? Also say that they  want to see the high levels of vaccination so levels 3 and 4 won't be needed. But that doesn't sound like things are going back to pre covid days (eg level 1)
