Batman:

TeaLeaf:

I truly dont tend to see Modernas thoughts that this pandemic will be under control by next year as just hype. Wear a mask, stay safe for 8-12 months and the world will hopefully be back to semi normal state of affairs. whoopa :-)

did they predict that?

it's possible. when countries open up everybody gets exposed and those who remain alive after 12 months will carry on like normal. it's possible?

watch what happens to countries that open up, then we will know.

There was an interview with Moderna a week or two ago where the CEO predicted the pandemic would be over in a year.

i see. a very wild guess.

i can see 2 ways - assuming no new gamechanger mutations

1. 90% of world vaccinated. no sign of that now, all developed countries hogging out for booster after booster

2. everybody open up, everybody gets exposed, pandemic over for those remaining after repeat exposure. what the cost is, we don't know for sure, but countries are doing it so we can watch and soon find out.

90% project now reads 19.3%

basically the more regions in level 3 the more vaccinations?

I’d guess so. We’ve been victims of our own success to a degree. Keeping the virus under control so well (until now) meant it lacked urgency and people haven’t seen the dangers. You even see it in the interviews on the news with people lining up for tests and jabs. They often remark that they decided to get them because it’s now close to home.

Even if we’d had ample vaccine stocks back in January, I really believe that we’d be in much the same scenario right now due to this. A very large block of hesitant people just wouldn’t have bothered.

TeaLeaf: Yes, that one was very exciting, but in typical NZ being in its own world, what was said to be a "high profile" person turned out to be a judges son and his mrs, pretty normal profile for an Aucklander.

Yea, but we'd be in this position with the same core group of hesitant people unvaxxed, but months ago.

The 'but months ago' bit is the point. Would you rather have 85% now or 75% four months ago? I know which one I would rather have as a starting point in an 'oh shit moment' happening today, on this date.

Quite possibly those very same people would still be unvaccinated.. But this outbreak may never have started because the person who was in MIQ that it leaked from may have been vaccinated, and likewise whoever they came into contact with which spread to in the community may have been vaccinated as well which could have meant this spread may have never even occurred.

The whole "there is no rush for us to be vaccinated because there is no Covid in NZ" message that we had drummed into us to justify the incredibly slow vaccine rollout really is coming back to haunt us.

Sure but that's a much bigger hypothetical. We could equally say that perhaps if the person in Wuhan hadn't come into contact with the bat or whatever.

Edit: Actually to elaborate a bit, we have (somewhat weak) evidence against that scenario anyway. We know Delta was constantly in MIQ. We also know that there were significant problems with the testing regime in MIQ and we also know that even with looming mandates a surprising amount of MIQ and border workers ended up not double vaccinated. And there were no supply constraints on that. Eventually it was always going to get through into a poorly vaccinated population.

Winston Peters has made some fairly colourful accusations about the involvement of a prominent Mongrel Mob member and the current Northland case. I won't repeat it here because what I've seen smelled of copy pasta but he's been prepared to repeat it outside of parliament on national television.

I don't think there are any press conferences today.

Here are a couple of (free) interesting articles from Consumer NZ concerning masks.

Wash your disposable masks, experts say

Group of Kiwi researchers  say you can wash a disposable mask 10 times and they still filter better than cloth ones.

Buying a mask

When you’re shopping for your next mask, here are the key things to consider.

iMac 27" [14.2] (late 2013), Airport Time Capsule 5th gen, iPhone13 x 2, iPad6, iPad Mini5, Spark Smart Modem 1st Gen

Panasonic TV Viera TH-L50E6Z (1080p), Panasonic Blu-ray PVR DMR-BWT835, Yamaha AVR RX-V1085 [6.1 Surround Speaker System], Apple TV 4k 64Gb (2nd gen)

Kia Sportage Urban EX (2019), Suzuki Swift SR7 (2011)

The difficult we can do immediately. The impossible takes a bit longer. But Miracles you will have to wait for.

He's not in Parliament anymore, so he's free to say what he likes (like John Key did, last weekend).

Speaking of masks I know a few people who have switched to using Lanaco masks in recent weeks. Mine arrived this week and I have to say the Breezy masks are IMHO the best masks I've tried so far - and more importantly they have the real benefit of having a highly effective Helix filter which is vastly more effective than a regular cotton or even a surgical mask.

Lots of people are also using the Helix filters inserts in washable masks which is s slightly more cost effective option. Places like Cactus, Meo and Earth sea Sky (just to name a few of the big players) all make these for the Helix filters.

Winston had a reputation for saying things in Parliament that would normally see you saddled with a defamation hearing outside of it. Hence why him saying it so publicly is noteworthy.

I'm not aware that Sir John Key defamed anyone in his piece.
