As I saw on Twitter (US-based)... "teachers who don't believe in science and nurses who don't believe in medicine resigning due to vaccine mandates. I don't have a problem with that"

vaccinations going well in certain camps https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/126671825/covid19-ninety-per-cent-of-all-district-health-board-staff-have-at-least-one-jab

Sorry to be a party-pooper but I would ask why, given that health is their core business, do they still have 10% unvaccinated!  99.5% of them would have had ample opportunity to at least have had their first jab by now.

It’s a large group with a normal distribution of different views and motivations. They have the same mix of saints, morons, rogues and clowns as any other group.

Who cares why they delayed just so long as they do get vaccinated.

Wastewater testing - Covid is now everywhere in Auckland metro, almost everywhere in the region.

Yeah, I know mate 😊, I was being facetious.  But I do care because it is taking longer than it should and the current numbers should not be used to celebrate a supposed success.  I see it as getting a C- on a school report for someone who should be getting As and Bs.

I expect (or hope?) MoH / epidemiologists have a reasonable grasp on how this is going to pan out based on demographics of known clusters and vaccination rates in those groups.  The above wastewater tests look considerably worse than Sydney did at a roughly equivalent stage, initial outbreaks were quite well confined.  But OTOH they had much lower vaccination rates at that time, and as we know, being vaccinated doesn't halt the spread - just slows it down.

I hope they're being extra vigilant to limit travel out of the region, better to have rolling/controlled regional pandemic spread than the whole country almost at once.

Seeing this, I'm now starting to think a L4 circuit breaker for the purposes of getting ahead of vaxxs is a good idea.

I'd just be blunt, say we can't handle the load on the health system as things stand with this vax rate, but if we get two weeks and our jab rate over 90% in those demographics, then we can skip down to L2 at the end of it.

Carrot, stick, whatever. But I'm starting to wonder why this is being ruled out if we can hang a L2 'Freedom Day' off the end of it if we meet a key target over the course of three weeks or so.

Batman: This explains why they're so confident about no circuit breaker needed. They are expecting a maximum of 43 ICU patients

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/covid-19-delta-outbreak-government-to-unveil-preparedness-of-health-system-for-delta/SA5R5MUO3ZNTGRVAFT4M7SIIWY/

(bearing in mind that all the older members of the public who have succumbed were not admitted to ICU)

I think these numbers are ridiculously optimistic.

A fit and healthy British friend in Tokyo caught Covid around the day of her second jab. She went downhill rapidly, but attempts to get into hospital were met with "sorry, we have no beds at all. Buy yourself an oxygen meter off Amazon, and if the number drops to 92 (from 99), and you have a fever of above 40, we might be able to fit you in. Otherwise stay at home, good luck, and maybe paracetamol might help."

This is in Japan, that has (depending on how you count them) 4 to 8 times as many ICU beds as NZ per head.

Once this gets into the general population, we're in for a nasty time.

The media never cease to amaze me.  Why oh why are they giving air time and column inches to that stupid anti vax mayor?

Those of us, which is probably 90 to 95% plus of the population who think the vaccine in a good idea, don't need to know how stupid she is. However for the anti vaxxers, giving a leader in the community with these views air time, is giving them support and justification for their convictions. It will further entrench their position.

Why don't the media just ignore her?

Maybe it will be illuminating for some to see how badly informed some public servants are.

It's a bit of a known issue with some midwives but there's a disturbing number of anti-vax/'skeptic' GPs and other medical professionals who should know better.

The fact it is even an issue for people like ECEs, teachers, medical staff etc should ring alarm bells.

Look, seriously what in the hell is happening here!!? How are these people leaving Auckland on a plane without a covid test?

"Two sex workers have been arrested at a Blenheim motel after travelling from Auckland without any exemption. The pair also failed to produce a negative Covid-19 test before departing Auckland, where the Delta variant continues to spread. A source told the Herald police were alerted to the women being in Blenheim on Tuesday.

Officers located them at a local hotel and arrested the pair. Neither had any exemption to travel nor had they had a test for Covid-19.

They were charged with failing to comply with the current Health Order. The source said the women did not resist their arrest but have since refused to provide any details about their movements since leaving Auckland and who they have had contact with."

Just because she's high profile it doesn't mean they need to give her stupid opinion on vaccines any oxygen.

I thought everyone going into the terminal was screened and had to provide evidence of a travel exemption.

Not giving it attention is how flogs like this get to remain in well-paid leadership positions they're clearly incapable of.
