Message wise, abandoning elimination was a mistake even if, in practice it was not achievable. Zero is a target understood by everyone.

But now we don't seem to have any generally accepted target. I'm reasonably clued up on what is happening but I have no idea even what our vaccination targets are.

Zero is still the target outside of Auckland.

Everyone feels and is sympathetic to Aucklands plight. Two thirds of the Country are not living/experiencing it and I get that.

To me it became apparent that Auckland would not get to zero about a week in to September. Zero was still the official target Nationwide then, I think. Two more weeks was added to Auckland L4 and fairly predictably, I would of thought, it didn't get the job done. This was still the best and fastest strategy, and worth a shot, to get Auckland folk out of severe lockdown. Well the rest is history. It didn't happen.

Since then the focus has very much been on Auckland but also keeping all of NZ safe.

I thought the only thing PM said about the rate was "very high target"

90 is what NZME come up with. There has been no official announcement or similar notations from official bodies.

Other than they supported NZMEs independent efforts to spark it up on their platforms.

The 90% target has been quoted extensively by numerous ministers and the PM along with intependent "experts" and modellers. It's not just something that NZME came up with.

The messaging has changed in recent days though - Bloomfield made it pretty clear yesterday on TV that 90% is only a milestone and that we still need to be aiming for a lot higher.

Looks like the government are looking to follow National's proposal and let more people back into the country before Xmas.

The only thing more demotivating than not having a target, is being set a target that is unrealistically high. Surefire way to divide a community as the minority have the majority say in the outcome for everyone.

A hard border for Auckland and nationwide home isolation would be madding I agree.
Can't see that happening though.
You would have to be crazy to not see that would be a huge issue.

Double vaxxed and a negative test to cross the board would be a fine idea but totally unworkable over Xmas.
How could you do a 100,000 covid tests and check 50,000 cars in a day?

Good luck to anyone trying to get a negative test at the same time as thousands of others between Xmas and New Years Eve.

Rapid test by then I would have thought? It's all different if vaccination rates are high enough.

Will the border even be maintained till Christmas.

I'm originally from Northland (too hard to get there at the moment to see family - I'm L3 without picnics) but I foresee interesting times ahead with the amount of road traffic that heads north every Christmas.

The PM's comments indicated that the double-jab + negative test are 'an option' for Xmas holidays out of Auckland - in the absence of any further comment form her, I'll take that as being an indication it's the best we can hope for.

If Auckland is still in level 3 by mid December with double vaccinations rates of 85 - 90% then expect marches in the 10s of thousands and more.

And the minute there is a march of over 10,000 expect level 2 within 2 days.

The reason we can't set any targets is whatever target we set the moment we open up, our hospitals will downgrade to third world.

Which in my impression is going to happen, and after weeks and now months of delay which won't change the ultimate outcome.

Should have spent the lockdown money on healthcare.

Goff makes a good point at RNZ; that a double-90% implies a single-rate 95% of eligible Kiwis, if the PM's 5% drop-off holds between 1st and 2nd doses.
