Technofreak:

As much as I want to see everyone who is eligible for the vaccine to be vaccinated, I see this announcement will create major rifts within our society. The anti vaxxers are going to become alienated and resentful. They are going to be on the outer right through out society, work and play. While we who are vaccinated will see this situation as self inflicted that is most definitely not how they see it. There are a whole range of reasons they justify their action from the selfish "Its my choice no tells me what to do" through to a genuine (but misplaced) fear of what the vaccine might do to them now or later in life.

With the decree that 90% need to be vaccinated before more freedoms of movement or activities resume, the government has effectively mandated vaccination. The anti vaxxers are going to come under extreme pressure from the rest of the community in order for everyone to regain their freedoms. The harder you push someone in situations like this the harder they will push back.

Get ready for for the backlash

Unvaccinated will fill up our hospitals(as they are anyway) with covid and will make it a problem for people who are vaccinated who may need hospital services for other reasons.

In addition I can see this being an uphill battle to reject someone who's not vaccinated/anti vaccine and it get's confrontational.

Take it from someone who used to work in hospo/entertainment. People do not like being told no you can't go and most people will indeed not just raise a fuss but also being confrontational. I feel pretty bad for my ex coworkers who may get into positions like this in the cinema industry.

Bloomfield is saying there will be around 180 cases per day in 2 weeks. As the numbers are doubling every 2 weeks that makes about 1,000 cases per day by Christmas.

What's the hospitalization rate at the moment? Will the Health Service be able to cope?

What's the hospitalization rate at the moment? Will the Health Service be able to cope?

Here is an excerpt from Dr Rawiri Taonui on stuff today

"With a record 102 new cases announced on Thursday, the City of Sails has passed the threshold of a runaway Delta event. Key risk indicators are off the scale. This is the second record in three days.

The average number of daily cases is six times higher than the average during week one of Delta alert level 3, cases with exposure in the community are four times higher. Daily unlinked cases are 12 times higher, fortnightly unlinked cases 20 times higher and hospitalisations four times higher. The Ministry of Health is no longer tracking unlinked clusters because it no longer knows where or how many there are. The 891 positive cases in isolation exceeds quarantine capacity, many are in less secure isolation units.

The upward curve of Delta cases has steepened. Delta will go exponential. We will see more record days. Cases will exceed 150 then 200 per day over the next week. To the week ending October 12, the weekly total of Delta cases increased 44.9 per cent. To the week ending October 19, they jumped 53.4 per cent. The current week increase is 37 per cent and rising.

If the Delta increase continues at 37 per cent over the next two weeks (more likely it will be higher), there will be 4000 cases by November 2. And if the Government does not take decisive action, Delta could reach 10,000 to 15,000 cases by the end of November."

Just felt that, central Chch. Wasn't significant here.

We have 1 firm no at work, has gone deep down the internet rabbit hole of the anti-vaxxers. He is quite prepared to wait out the current "crisis" if that means no haircuts, no bars, restaurants etc.

I think that many people are scared of the vaccine rather than just being anti Vaxx. I had success with two couples by explaining what I did and this made them feel less fearful.

After reading a blog post by a doctor describing the mechanism of the vaccines which MAY cause clotting in very few. The doctor mentioned that he took low dose aspirin for a month after his vaxx. That’s what inspired me to do the same and it gave me a level of comfort. Husband was on blood thinners so not an issue. In our case we were nervous because one offspring has had DVts three times. She was told she has a gene that makes her susceptible and naturally, she got this gene from parents.

I think giving someone a simple tool that reduces a perceived danger makes them feel more in charge and could push many to take it. Worth a suggestion.

On the other hand, the stupid can’t be fixed and they are the wild cards. I am constantly sent links from one about Lizard People taking over the world and the vaccine is designed to kill down most of us. A really decent person who is so fearful it’s sad. I keep explaining that 'they' vaccinated all health care workers and doctors first and would they do this if the plan was to kill off people. Interestingly when I mentioned taking Aspirin, he wavered a bit and willingly discussed this so who knows. It’s all about reducing people’s fears.

Looking at Whangarei, the broad trends are depressingly clear. Better-off suburbs are yellow or light green, poorer suburbs are dark green.

So what actually needs to happen for the Auckland border to be lifted?

I really don't really know what to do about this honestly. The vaccine is free, we have been messaging hard out for months, we have had vaxathons, offered taxi chits, offered grocery vouchers, GP's are calling 1:1 to get people who are on lists as unvaccinated (which seem depressingly outdated).

I don't believe there would be many who genuinely are unaware of the messaging talking about the importance of it. There are some. A friend of mine was working at the Vaxathon site, someone walks past and asked 'what's happening here', gets told, queued up, and got a vaccination on the spot, but you can't turn on the tv, radio, open Facebook or any other social media without hearing about covid and vaccinations!

If I believed in the Lizard People, I'd reason that they would indeed "kill off" the health care workers and doctors first, to remove the ability to treat the rest of the people so as to maximise the kill rate.

The same thing they haven't been doing for the last 7 weeks.

Stay the F at home and get jabbed. All 16,000 of you stupid people sitting on the fence.
Or be bullied by those who are and now threatened they won't be freely going to the same businesses we are.

Once the target hit, essentially a govt backed reopening for those who are jabbed only.

So the unvaccinated have more freedoms under the current system than the proposed new system. This provides a disincentive for the unvaccinated to get the jab because once we reach 90% the new rules will apply.

good luck on the Lakes DHB reaching 90% anytime soon, in Rotorua we have large areas where the community hasn't even reached 40% for the second dose and the first dose isnt much better at around 50% in the same areas

Agree, the rules will probably change on the 29th Nov when the government realise 90% fully vaxxed NZ wide is unachievable

i like setting high target though. makes it feel like we've got standards.

For some the incentives will only work if they are cold hard cash or other products.

Or maybe the government could do a get the jab wipe your fines days

NSW opened up at a snap of the finger the moment everybody was freshly vaccinated and their cases have been dropping every single day (so far).

fingers crossed ?

I was in favour of them setting up a lottery, 10M + 10M made up of $10,000 prizes. If you are vaccinated 1 x by say 25th of October then you are entered to win 10K, and if you have both by that date, you are eligible for the second lottery too.

The cost would be a fraction of a week of lockdown, which means those who vaxxed early and those who get off their asses and vaccinate now are eligible.
