Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins told Checkpoint yesterday time slots were an option the government was considering.

The word 'option' stands out here. Might have even been deliberate to try and motivate people to get a move on.

It doesn't affect them so much when 1.6 million Aucklanders are stuck at home. It'd sure affect them if they were and Aucklanders could go and play where everyone was at 90%.

Agreed, and I'm not sure Aucklanders will have much time for the roadblock crowd if that is what ends up transpiring.

The Team of Five Million is starting to look a lot like "The Team of 2 million north of the Tron do the work and everyone else does what they want".

If we want to talk about who is taking what burden then the rest of NZ has months of catching up to do.

So I can't see Aucklanders taking too kindly to even more provincialism given the literal months other parts of the country have had to get ahead of this.

I get the sentiment but completely disagree with the basis.

Those of us south of the Tron aren't shirking any sort of responsibilities, but the cold fact is that we aren't directly affected by it, if the virus isn't in our location exactly what actions can we take to alleviate the suffering of those that are in lockdown? A bit of "virtue signalling" and messages of support, sure, but the fact remains, we don't have the virus running rampantly through the other areas. You're basically saying "we are suffering, therefore you have to suffer too"...

I think they (team of 2M) just want all of NZ fully vaccinated to 90% at the same time already, and move all of NZ to the traffic light system already.

No, I'm saying that if the rest of the country can't/won't use the months of warning they've had that Delta is here to get vaccinated then there's no moral justification for keeping Aucklanders locked up any longer than they have to be; at some point, that isn't Auckland's problem.

For that to happen, the virus almost needs to spread to other areas. Nothing prompts a bit of quick action like the sudden panic that you are likely to be directly affected if you do nothing.

Novavax application to Medsafe filed:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/126884622/covid19-novavax-applies-to-medsafe-for-vaccine-use-in-new-zealand

I would be keen to have this as my booster, if it is available when I become eligible for a booster (currently I am at 4 months after my second Pfizer dose - Many countries are running boosters from 6 months).

But given yesterdays announcement of Approx 5m more pfizer doses being ordered, it is clear the government wants to hedge it's bets when it comes to boosters.

Footnote:

  • I am a big fan of Novavax, but note:
  • It has only been approved in one country (Indonesia) so far.
  • Has been massively delayed due to production issues.
  • Approval process can take a long time.
  • "Waiting" for any brand of vaccine is a high risk move, given we have one of the better vaccines globally available now, and have many cases of covid-19 in the community.

Auckland has been locked down and locked in for 2 and a half months.

That is more than enough time for the rest of NZ to have gotten their 2 jabs....and Auckland too for that matter.

But it hasn't happened. And doesn't even look close to happening.

What is wrong with this country?!

Before delta arrived, being in "group 4", I was more than happy to wait to get the vax, given it wouldn't have been this year (in all likelihood) I would have had months to see what the effects of it were in the real world. Delta arrived, changing the urgency and I went with the change. If delta wasn't here, there would not be anywhere near the no of doses administered, there would be no publicity, no mandates and sure as shit, no protests about vaccines.

My trigger point was the arrival in the country of a more virulent version of the virus, for others their trigger points will be the arrival in their neighborhood...

Well, it will arrive in their neighbourhood when they let Auckland out, so make the decision, set a time (so that Aucklanders can make Christmas plans with their families). Tell the lagging regions it will be in their neighbourhood for Christmas, and if you want to be protected BEFORE it gets there, go down the road and get a jab.

Widespread pfizer and AZ admistration have given us everything we need to know. Happy with taking it.

Novavax had not had Widespread administration. Who knows what the hidden effects are.

Pfizer all the way.

A good opinion piece here. I can't help thinking some of the anti vax sentiment is actually anti authority/anti government especially with a lot of the way the "message" has been delivered or spun.  Perhaps if we had had more people like Leo Molly delivering the message there might not be so much pushback.

If approved those idiots that claim to be waiting for this will just find another lame excuse.

This, it's been a long hard year. Not offering up clarity on this is going to make it impossible for people to actually plan for some time off - at least those who are lucky enough to get it.
