PolicyGuy:

If you actually read the whole of Dr Bloomfield's letter to Mr Tamihere - I live paused the TVNZ1 News to do it - I think the argument is based on the MoH discharging its responsibilities to act as a good partner under the Treaty of Waitangi.

They reason that the Whanau Ora Commissioning Agency (WOCA) is asking for all the data for the whole of the North Island, but MoH giving it that would mean trampling on the mana of other organisations in whose rohe WOCA has no status, and that some of those other iwi-based organisations are doing a bang-up job and don't need or want any 'help' from a Tamaki Makauru based non-iwi organisation.

"I'm sorry, we can't give you all that information because to do so would violate the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi"

It's lovely bit of legal gymnastics, which I suspect demonstrates a rather deep level of antipathy to WOCA at MoH

Team of 5 million can't also be an Us and Them because the division does marginalise and stigmatise one or another in a virus apartheid. I just wish we could collectively be counted as citizens of this country and all be encouraged to do what’s required and be viewed equally otherwise we will forever be pointing the finger at another group whether they be white, black, pink, or stupid. Count persons vaccinated, not groups.

The virus doesn't pop it's head out to check on someone's ethnicity or affiliations before deciding to infect them. This virus is never racist or discriminatory and treats everyone as an equal opportunity. It's teaching us something important.

this is why I have no reservations getting my young kids vaccinated https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/4-year-old-boy-in-icu-among-4-children-diagnosed-with-inflammatory-syndrome-linked

to me it's a no brainer

I don't care if they dilute the adult dose with sugar water

one thing is for certain. whatever is said is rarely the true reason behind everything, that applies to both sides.

I'm quite certain he can book flights, but as to whether he'll be able to take them is absolutely anybodies guess. Three different ministers have said three different things at press conferences in the last week alone.

Until the magic 8 ball gets shaken, no one will know - not even the government.

If there are no further cases in SI and Akl is in the hundreds if not thousands by then I would hesitate a yes if double vaxed plus negative test.

Scott3:

  •

    • Vaccines for 5 - 11 year olds will hopefully be here by the end of the year - approved in the USA already. - should give a big boost to overall community immunity.

I'm not sure why you think they'll be here by the end of the year. The govt have said multiple times in recent days it won't be until 2022, with Hipkins already saying that these are part of our new Pfizer order and inferring that this order of 4.7m doses to cover pediatric and boosters will be delivered from March onwards.

Ardern hammering home the "Aucklanders will be able to travel" message today with no new details around the border.

Ben Thomas on The Nation suggesting that the increasing talk about the 'practicalities' of the arrangements being stressed indicates they're laying the framework for there to be no border at all, which fits in with why I suspect Hipkins said what he said.

Winter Covid is coming

And sure to catch the 'it's not real' right out.

Auckland border.

Flights and ferries are somewhat easier as there is time and a point to check.
Though if you include a test, you also have the advance planning to get test.

For road.
Having been stuck in the stop start traffic at those times checking is kinda practical.
At peak.
Though that might turn the whole holiday period into stop start.
Problem will be the inevitable trying it on and long arguments to get them to pull aside.
Delays turning these around.
No toll plaza at Mercer etc to make it more efficient.

So for those going on longer holidays there is a reward to inconvenience, but day trippers.
Though with this in mind it might be fewer crossing the border helping to ease things.

A city so super and liveable no one wants to stay for their holidays.  :-)
To be fair GV27 below is right.

This is hardly a fair assessment of Auckland as a city - one of the reasons I love it here is I can drive three hours in any direction (might get a bit wet if I go West, to be fair) and be in a totally different part of the country that might as well be thousands of kms away.

Summer usually involves at least one day/night trip to the Coromandel on a long drive, maybe a trip to Taupo.

That's a lot of discretionary spend in other parts of the country who probably need it a lot more than I need to take that trip.

E: Also squeezed in a day trip to Ruapekapeka once but that was a mission and also the Northern roadworks are a mess, so won't be in a rush to repeat that anyway.

Pak and Save for the first time in a while yesterday. Our local has extended it's hours to match countdown. Makes life easier.

This branch at least is no longer allowing byo bags inside the market. That's new.

The surprising thing - they are still doing trolly swap at the checkout. Pile your stuff on the conveyer and it goes into the trolly left behind by the previous customer. Not sensible.

It's not completely un sensible.

It's not to avoid fomite transmission. That's been put to pastures when delta is so aerosol transmissible.
It's to avoid queues and long term face to face.
The faster you are out, the faster the ones waiting due the inside person limits get in. The less chance you are interacting with the operator

Austria bans the unvaccinated from restaurants as COVID-19 cases surge
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/austria-bans-unvaccinated-cafes-hairdressers-covid-19-cases-surge-2021-11-05/

VIENNA, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Austria said on Friday it is barring those not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 from cafes, restaurants and hairdressers as infections approach the record set a year ago and the government struggles to convince holdouts to get the shot.

The percentage of double vaccinated people in Austria is 64%, one of the lowest in western Europe (and also quite similar to ours at 65%).

Ford is first major US automaker to mandate COVID-19 vaccines
https://www.kcra.com/article/ford-first-major-us-automaker-mandate-vaccines/38152350

Ford will mandate COVID-19 vaccines for its 32,000 U.S. salaried employees, a spokesperson for the company said Wednesday.

The rule will require most US salaried employees to be fully vaccinated against by Dec. 8.
