It was inevitable. Just a matter of time. Too late for vaccinations now but maybe this will push the procrastinators to get them anyway. That will still help the survivors later.
So this is the 'Stick' approach, rather than the govenment using carrots to get people vaccinated.
The problem is that once it is throughout the community, a percentage of people are just going to ignore any restrictions or requirements unless they get very sick, as there is now no hope of eliminating it and going back to normal. I know someone in the UK, and they had some delivery people delivering a new washing machine. The delivery people refused to wear masks when entering their house to set it up and were rude, and we are going to get that sort of thing happening here. How many people who develop mild covid symptoms are going to, are are currently bothering to get tested.
Over 200 cases today is very high for a weekend when testing in Auckland is a tiny 7800. That is nearly 2.5% of those tested that have covid, which is a very high rate. The trend is obviously going up quit a bit despite the increase in vaccinations which is supposed to slow down or stop this growth. The PM said 1400 cases a week is what their modeling showed for the end of November, but we are already there, and probably greatly exceeding that when you factor in all the people who aren't getting tested or have mild on no symptoms. I think NZ deserved some information from the government today about what is happening in the rest of NZ regarding cases, because obviously they can't just let it rip in level 2. Otherwise why is Waikato and Auckland in level 3? I thought suppression and ringfencing these cases with localized restrictions would be common sense.
