Yes. I think everyone is ready for the Auckland border to go. A mass influx from overseas might be alright right now, but in a few months time could be completely different situation.

It's easy to be a bit pessimistic at the moment.

Continuing on as we are now is no good, but opening up to the World is pretty scary - vaccinated or not.

It is interesting to see some countries who were lauding their reopening plans, and looking at us with a bemused expression on their faces....are now having a very different feeling about this fourth wave, I am thinking of the UK and Europe...more recently Aussie.

Some friends in Aussie cannot understand why we are slow. But they do not have the health infrastructure crises as a start point. All fine and well if you have a health care system with five times the resource per capita.

I think what another poster just wrote about Auckland opening first and then lets see is right too. I was feeling chipper. But this latest African situation has made today a bit more stressful If I am honest. But I do realize we have to wait for the data...there may be actually no reason for alarm.

And on the other side of the coin, burying your head in the sand and just hoping things will not get worse it not a viable strategy either. Plan for the worst, expect the best.

Not a mandate, just a law that says they can't operate without Vaccine Passes, and if they require vaccine passes to operate, their staff must also be vaccinated.

They can choose not to vaccinate, but then must operate contactless (ie., at Level 3 rules).

According to Stuff heading across the ditch to Australia will be an expensive exercise with tests before flights at $250 min here and another required coming back. The cost for a family of four going over would be around $1,000 just for the tests. Then you need another two tests on arrival while in isolation, who pays for these has not yet been decided.

One concern is that you may be quite safe in Auckland as you are protected by the restrictions and your compliance. When its Freedom Day, your compliance won't then be the main issue, its the many people around you in a more open Auckland. Treat others as risks, and protect/be careful. The virus will spread, including by the vaccinated

What a load of crap. In my opinion, he's doing it because he wants the income. He's not doing for anyone else. If he really thinks of everyone else he would get vaccinated without any questions asked.

The whole idea is to let it spread while population is at its peak immunity. Unfortunately there are some who either can't or won't be vaccinated.

Not sure how letting it spread while at peak immunity will help.

It will still spread when we are at a lower immunity a bit later on.

The only minor advantage is that while at peak immunity the un-vaxxed will have more space in the hospitals and then have some natural immunity for a while.
But with a higher vaxxed population at peak immunity the spread will be slower than at lower immunity anyway

IMHO The best idea is to keep up the pressure up on vaccinations role-out.
Get the boosters done and the 5-11 YO group

This quietly got changed a couple of days ago.

Prior to that, What trig42 said was correct. If the business was going to run a vaccine pass system, they needed to have their staff vaccinated.

The change meant that any business that was able to operate using vaccine passes, or had the option of getting more operational flexibility by doing so, must have vaccinated staff.

Timeline was also adjusted with only 1st dose being needed by 3rd December, and 2nd at some date next year.

Would have come as a big shock to businesses like that restaurant that were planning to take the more restrictive option under the traffic light system to avoid requiring staff to be vaccinated.

I'm supportive of the change. From international experience 90%+ of people don't want to be vaccinated will do so to keep their job. The more vaccine requirements we have, the more vaccinated people we will have, and the less we will as a country be hit by covid-19.

I strongly disagree.

Letting is spread unrestrained would overload our health system and cause un-needed suffering.

We need to slow the spread as much as possible, to buy more time:

For vaccination (we are still doing over 6000 first doses a day mon - sat)
To spread the load on hospitals.
For new treatments to be approved and delivered (especially the pills).
For vaccines to be approved for new age groups.

I don't think the peak immunity thing is a real concern - boosters have been approved for the 6 month mark. And studies show that a booster delivers a great immune response.

As a side note, I have been doing work on a site in the newer part of the 277 mall.

Today up in the food court area, first time up there under L3.2, there was quite alot of people lines of people at food establishments who have no idea how far 2m actually is, and if they do, someone cuts in thinking the line has ended.

How quickly people forget, at least 99% of people were masked up.
