Wouldn't it be nice if everyone stopped listening to the antivax conspiracy theorists and actually voted with their feet/wallets. A few more of them might see the error of their ways.

I just get frustrated that the Facebook page for my home area is run by someone who is possibly anti vaxx (she leaves up posts supporting Voices for freedom, and also links to the No Jab Jobs page, etc) but she also appears to be very anti Government. Lots of Jacinda memes and crap like that.

Someone asked about businesses that were supporting unvaccinated people. It was reported and she said "post is staying up! A community is everyone, vaccinated and unvaccinated!" (or words to that effect).

Makes me wonder what she would do if she actually caught the virus. My personal opinion is someone like that shouldn't be running a community page or have anything to do with it.

She's an antivax. The "community is for everyone, vaccinated and unvaccinated" is an out.

Not this cafe, is it?

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/127075707/covid19-signs-on-cafes-welcoming-vaxed-and-unvaxed-may-look-official-but-theyre-not

"... been posting official looking Unite Against Covid-19 signs saying "All Welcome, vaxed and unvaxed". She said she cannot in good conscience turn away loyal customers when the vaccine pass system becomes an option with the traffic light system."

My opinion is 1. she's an antivax and 2. she cannot in good conscience turn away those sweet, sweet dollars.

Also I am not sure it's up to the owner to opt-in or opt-out of the system.

There is a restaurant in Masterton that has said it will close before the system comes in just so it doesn't have to ask. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

it is much the same in Murupara , where the local and very popular doctor is very Anti- Vax and because of that they have one of the lowest vaccination rates in NZ, it's a shame because when covid arrives it will destroy the village.

The Government has been very good at putting the bulk of the financial and now non financial pressure on employers for the pandemic -

Wage subsidy, paid to employers on the basis that they pay at least 80% of wages and not utilise leave, so businesses were expected / required to top up wages/salaries to the 80% mark. Now businesses are being required to enforce vaccine passes and decline paying customers, thereby incurring further revenue penalties.

I understand the social aspect and that they will potentially be better off in the long term (through sustaining healthy society and reducing the risk of future lockdowns), but when a business has been kicked in the nads for the last few months by lockdowns that have actually happened, protecting against something that may or may not happen in the future is a big ask for some. Whats the saying "a bird in the hand....."

Actions have consequences. Adults are supposed to be able to work them out and decide if they are worth it.

I think they should be on general issue!

I've just seen a Facebook post from one our local country pubs saying that they will be closed from the 3rd until further notice as they don't believe in the mandates and the two classes that the government has created.

I am becoming increasingly concerned about the staff who will have to check vaccine certificates and ultimately turn people away if they can't produce them. In most cases these will be young low wage workers who will have to frequently deal with verbal abuse from aggressive anti-social nutters. It wouldn't surprise me if they even end up on the receiving end of physical assaults. How are small businesses going to manage their health & safety obligations around this if they don't have the financial means to contract security guards?

Ideally the police should be regularly visiting cafes, bars and cinemas as an "anytime, anywhere" style of deterrent, but do they actually have the resources to do this?

I can see this being a source of major tension between the government and unions.

My anti vaxxer mates says there will be sides. One "side" is about 96% and one "side" is about 4% (my estimate based on vax % in NZ)

Is 96 vs 4, sides?  I choose not to be a criminal, so am I taking sides if non criminal vs criminal is a similar overwhelming %?

Reckon eh - exactly the reason someone like her should not be running any sort of community page at all. At minimum she could be neutral, but this is just bad.

Of course, if she actually caught the virus herself she may sing a different tune.

That will happen, it happens now in various premises unrelated to Covid or mandates. Why would someone go to a vax only premise when they know they need a cert that they don't have? That wont happen, not unless anyone has been living under a rock. So I dont see that as being a common issue, it will be more the domain of militant anti vaxxers being trouble makers, but I don't see it being rife every day and every night

I was planning on going to the South Island to see family next year, but am having second thoughts given some of the antivaxx bs floating around the local community page, not to mention the outright hostility towards people wearing masks etc. Quite sad really.

As to the guy who died, I guess at least he didn't ask for the vaccine on his deathbed, which I've heard of happening a lot, especially in the US - but by that point it's far too late. Would the pill make any difference to people in that scenario though? (genuine question)

I would not read to much into a facebook page. Clearly a vocal minority based on the Vaccine rates in the south island. Most DHB are nearly 90%+ double vaxxed.

Yes there will be spots that hold out and I'd expect urban areas are more vaxxed that rural, mainly because the rural people probably feel like they won't see the virus being further away, combined with a few anti-vaxx clusters?

Yes mask wearing outside is less common, but here in Dunedin, and in Queenstown last weekend the mask mandate inside is well followed.

I hope you're right - it's just that a lot of people in my family (as well as people I care about) are on that page and it concerns me they may see this antivaxx drivel and change their minds about getting the vaccination.

I have a question about the new traffic light system. Can I go to the beach with my boys, or is that not permitted, and if it is do I need to wear a mask?
