From Washington Post today

  • 1 in 420: The number of Americans who have died of the coronavirus.
  • 1 in 290: The number of people who have died of the virus in the most hard-hit state, Mississippi.
  • 1 in less than 7: The number of Americans who have had confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
  • 1 in 1,300: The number of Americans who have been hospitalized with the virus, per data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • 72 percent: The percentage of Americans who say they know someone who has died of or been hospitalized with the virus, according to a Pew Research Center poll from September.
  • One-third: The proportion of Americans who say they’ve had a family member or close friend who has died of the virus, according to an October poll from YouGov. (The numbers were similar across the political spectrum, in case you think people might oversell or undersell the toll of the pandemic in their personal lives for political reasons.)
  • 1 in 8: The number of people, in that same poll, who say a family member has died of the virus.

Covid has a number of sinister qualities that are unique to this particular disease. Covid is insidious...a silent creeping menace, the illusion of a slow train wreck (actually if you take a long view, this could be a slow train wreck that lasts 5-10 years....add up that death and misery toll).

If modellers somehow could use quantum computing at the start of an outbreak like this, to predict with accuracy, the course of a pandemic, taking in all the variables using qubiits...you would find that most Americans would have been horrified at the impact of Covid after two years.

Approaching one million deaths in two years would have sent Americans into a vaccination frenzy.

But like tobacco, Covid kills your people slowly, too slow to stop them smoking.

And that is not even the most dangerous thing about this disease. Covids greatest weapon, is to prey on the selfish gene of mankind.

The Asymptomatic mechanism ensures that the selfish, the indolent, the disaffected, and the uneducated form this delusion in their minds "It won't affect me".....well as this post I have quoted so ably points out...Covid "Affects everyone".

So what have we learned?

We have learned that old people and the chronically ill do not matter enough....nor does the random lottery of a child's fate matter to the narcissistic social media generation of this plague of moral blindness.

Some things are true of any age, the anti science attacks are the same threatened people who bullied geeks in the playground at school when they were children, because no one likes a smart kid....Scientia pontentia est'.

The first target of fascist thugs is the intelligentsia...I digress....but there is a reason people with good hair throw stones at people like Anthony Fauci from the Fox platform.

We are seeing the trickle down of this, with our nurses, people who studied hard to get degrees, being abused on the front lines by Morons.

Our own Ashleigh Bloomfield gets targeted for heavy criticism when really, even if you do not like the decisions, this man is clearly one of our brightest minds and most adept communicators.

I have posed the question to others about how they would see this anti Covid movement reacting to a new Mutant that acts like MERS....lets say Covid ups its game and kills half of all of us....what say the antivaxxers then?

Most people I have invited to entertain that thought experiment assure me that the antivaxxers would go into hiding from a beast like that and would only emerge to get the vaccine.

Yeah nah I dunno, these people are not accepting this reality, why would they pivot all of a sudden and wake up to the reality of a MERS like murder fest?

I think they would use the same predetermined bias to come up with some new lame narrative....I mean according to them more people are dying from the vaccine than from Covid....i doubt that idiocy would change even if Covid was fifty times more lethal.

Personally I think Americans are war fatigued, I think they have PTSD from this thing, I think they no longer know what way is up.

NSW reported 804 new cases today. A worrying trajectory:

They are highly vaccinated (93.2% of 16+ with second dose).

First thing I would say is that this surge is through no fault of the NSW response to the virus.

This is a pattern seen in every single flattened Delta curve. Cases bounce back, however vaccine rates in places comparable to NSW ensure I.C,U, use remains ok.

We should anticipate a similar rebound here.

However there is a new player in the landscape, Omicron does this too, as seen in two independent monitoring systems now, SA and the UK...a sudden spike in cases with a near vertical exponential climb starting at around 300 cases.

Again we should expect the same speed here if indeed this is Omicron driven...then there is no reason that NZ will not mirror this trajectory.

I would be very interested to know how many of these cases have been sequenced for S gene drop out (an Omicron thing) or even better are confirmed Omicron.

Whether these rebounds are exclusively a function of the loosening of restrictions in a Delta wave....we will not know...until all these silly posts about traffic light status are satiated with more freedoms to cause a case rebound in New Zealand because people are fixated on the criteria rather than the picture in totality...which says....a mans made up rules for when it is supposed to be ok to be orange or green....has nothing to do with what a virus will actually do in response to being given more opportunities to infect people.

Had my booster today, and for the first time I've had a reaction.  My arm is OK, but definitely feeling woozy and generally shite.  They say that's a good thing as it shows you are generating antibodies or whatever, and I am sure it will be short lived.  They actually warned me that people are having more reaction to the third 'booster' jab.

That was why I was quite pleased to get Covid arm (histamine reaction) on my second shot, it shows the immune system is doing its job.

If you do get a reaction like this, remember to report it so they can build up data on different responses to the vaccine.

Noooohh, noooh, that's not right. I've had people tell me my White House superspreader events were the BIGGEST EVER. BIGGEST EVER. That story is just a lie spread by the Democracts. No-one spreads Covid better than I can. Fake news, fake news.

Im only surmising, but "the less than ideal" public as far as vaxxes are concerned are the night club social public (hope Im not disobeying the FUG as regards discrimination). Back in the day we talked about cruise ships being petri dishes, more the same here. If there was a large event that catered for all walks of life, the ratio of vaxxed and unvaxxed would be "normal" But if you have an event thats skewed towards the unvaxxed demographic, its probably not surprising.

PS why does this laptop/OS keep correcting unvaxxed to untaxed! :-)

Problem is Medical Council seems to be toothless and missing in action.
Wait and see what police do, or anyone else but them.

They know of something less than 30 antivax doctors.
Apparently its great news they know, and we don't.

Their patents may not know they are signed up with doctors giving them less than good advice.
Medical council should be sharing what it knows so people can be aware.

Undoubtedly there is much more where they have thrown their training out the door not just this.

Its their doctor and they are told to go to their doctor to discuss any concerns about vaccines.
So we have sent them to...

Murupara, some parts of Northland , and people seeking weight loss programs in Christchurch.
Apparently there are many more, though maybe less than 30 ?

A charge leveled at a Doctor is seen as an affront to the invisible class system in New Zealand. Doctors are meant to be our betters by virtue of a lack of a aristocracy they represent a higher class in New Zealand society.....Doctors, Judges, Academics, business tycoons, and political figures are from a cut above in terms of how our society is structured.

All share one thing in common. If you attack them, they exist in bubbles that are free from accountability. They collectively stick together.

Birds of a feather and all that.

My observation of the medical council is that it is a protectorate first and foremost, discipline happens when it is forced upon them.

Sandra Coneys an unfortunate experiment is a really good and horrifying read if you want a behind the scenes look at the power of figures in the medical field.

Dozens of our women were used in cancer experiments, a number died, others were carved up  and radiated because of one mans decision to watch abnormal cells in the cervix rather than tell the women and treat them...he literally wanted to see if they got cancer.....well they did.

He was censured by the medical council for probably killing a number of women....well done medical council.,,,you showed him alright wot wot...

I still think it is concerning. NSW didn't break through the 400 case mark in this latest surge until the 8th December, I think this could well be too recently to be showing up in the hospitalization data.

Worrying thing is if the current trajectory continued (Reff of 1.68), they will be above 5000 daily cases at new years, roughly two weeks away.

You could be right about the hospitalization & ICU thing, but if wrong, NSW would have massive issues.

I think most of this spike will be delta. NSW only had 10 cases of omicron in the 24 hours to 8pm 11 December - Likely it is still only making up a small chunk of the 800+ cases reported today.

Despite the surge, NSW is pushing ahead relaxing restrictions (i.e. dropping some mask mandates, making some contact tracing requirements optional, and allowing the un-vaccinated into settings like retail.) If i was running the show in NSW, I would be getting cold feet and hitting pause on that one.

NSW is... not exactly blessed with the best leadership of the Australian states. In particular under Berejiklian it was arguably the worst-run state in Australia. So I wouldn't expect any sensible behaviour from them in dealing with this.

Related to the doctors being suspended for spreading misinformation: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-delta-outbreak-three-doctors-suspended-from-practising-amid-misinformation-probe/VN3KTYIAJ7BTQR6QOQQ3Y4NYJU/

At least someone is doing something about these people who profess to be doctors.
