Now we have Prof Michael Baker calling for lockdowns again when Omicron arrives.

That is simply not going to work now, the public are over lock downs and the Govt has sold everybody on two jabs to live a normal life.

No he didn’t. He was asked a question about lockdowns and he said that they would have to look at the national strategy again if that was to be the response. He said that there should be a discussion now about how to react to Omicron.

Prof Baker didn't but Bloomfield did..

Bloomfield said he wouldn't rule out future localised lockdowns, should Omicron make its way into the community.

"Even under the current [traffic light] framework, there is provision for local restrictions - whether that is Delta or Omicron."

UK 70% full vaccinated and boosters that rolled out in September and overnight another daily record. 88,376 new cases in 24 hours following on from yesterdays 78,610. Vaccinated or not without boosters here we are staring down the barrel of an Omicron outbreak sooner rather than later.

Yes, so really, nothing has changed at all. No news to report or post about. Bordering on scaremongering

Being in Christchurch, I'm not overly worried by the L word, but I'd imagine many posters in Auckland would hate the thought.

I'm more concerned that just as things started to look better and we reached a great double vax rate, the game changes a new variant enters the game. Now the whole cycle repeats, have another shot, have another potential shift in traffic lights or localised lockdowns. The whole process starts again and it just feels like it never ends. It is quite disheartening at what should be a happy time of year.

I do spare a thought for other countries around the world doing it a lot harder than us right now.

ChCh here too and agree. Once 5-11's are done and boosters are rolled out for less than 6 months gap, that's all we can do. Im sure when many daily cases start, many people will modify their outside activities. Still do them but in a less crowded scenarios. The its Winter which will keep many at home a lot more, thats probably not a bad thing, and hopefully come out the other side as protected as any country can be

New South Wales are giving us an insight into what happens if you make a political decision to let omicron rip, and actually loosen restrictions in the face of a case explosion.

Thanks to their great experiment, we will know how to think about this variant.

In New South Wales they are sticking to what was promised, a swim at the beach, never mind that there is a shark fin behind the waves...we were promised a sweem....."thees is about personal responsibeelity".

Crazy to see people focused on their freedoms, banking on 90% vaccine rates, against a variant that reduces the protection from infection to the 30 percentile, while the Northern Hemisphere is lighting the beacons of war.

The jabbed will, by in large be okay, so most of us then.

But health care and supply chains are not unaffected when a hundred thousand people need a few days off to recoup from a flu like illness.

It will be their Govts fault for so many cases. Or if restrictions keep it under control its their Govts fault for lack of freedom.

Which is why the new Premier is saying this is about personal responsibility (your fault) and let her rip....the daily pressers are truly bizarre, Perottett smiling and nodding and full of no worries, followed by the health Ministry ranting about the threat while Perrottet nods and smiles in the back ground having just finished saying the complete opposite (we have seen this playbook from the Orange one).

Yip, pretty much,

He was led into the question by reporters, and in hindsight he should have said

"the case is in MIQ not the community, if a case does make it into the community we will review the settings as the traffic light system allows"

But they wanted their headline....

Whats up with Jetstar ?
Reports of a group on Jetstar travelling without masks out of Wellington, covid denialists heading back home ?
Just on RNZ news.

There was comment on first travel day that Jetstar were more spot than checking on vaccine passes, or tests ?

On track for the 2.4 day doubling time at this rate.

A mate of mine in Country NSW just messaged me and posted three alerts from places he had been doing the Chrissy shopping at, usual suspects, a pharmacy, supermarket, and the petrol station, must be very unnerving right now.
