So what is it. Still lots of people still coming in (there's really not since Sunday), or none will because its too expensive and no flights (have been pointing that out)? Can't claim it both ways.

I don't know if the government has any plans to get them back if they can't afford to, or charter  planes if they aren't flying.

It looks like they are also concerned that the 600,000 NZers currently  living in Australia may try to come back, as the PM has said they should remain in Australia.

a big change of tone from W Peters (assuming they maintain communication with each other)

They learned not to use "midnight".

Closed borders from 11.59 pm tonight.

And they learnt to not allow a 36 hour window for a rush of people.

[EDIT] - Re read the article, and the deadline is for planes boarding after 11:59PM, not clearing immigration. - So people in the air are OK, unlike my earlier remarks.

Geektastic: Border now shut.

That’ll be interesting.

Except all but 2? Cases were kiwis returning home anyway. Who are still allowed to.

yes, our residents are also not very responsible! one got a school shut down by turning up to school with symptoms.

Had to happen, but the decision will suck for say the person on a work visa (and who had made self isolation arrangements), who is in the air to NZ as I type.

Not only will some of those people have additional long hall flights ahead of them to go back, but some will be going into covid-19 hotspots like new york...

The cutoff is boarding time not landing time - anyone in the air will be allowed to enter.

https://www.newsweek.com/coronavirus-case-recoveries-worldwide-us-italy-spain-china-iran-1493028

From the above:

As concerns about the coronavirus outbreak mount, officials continue to urge people to not lose sight of the big picture, including the more than 82,000 people who have recovered.

No longer predominantly affecting China, that new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is rapidly spreading through Europe, the United States and Iran. On Monday, cases outside China surpassed those within China for the first time since the outbreak started. Of the 204,277 confirmed cases around the world, 8,246 people have died.

Now if you were one of the 82,000 people who have recovered, you could be of great help to those who are self isolating etc. Perhaps we should allow in people who can prove they have fully recovered from COVID-19. I almost wish I was one of the 82,000 so I could get on with life again, if that's possible!

Now, if there have been 204,277 cases and 8,246 have died and 82,000 have recovered, that still leaves an awful lot of people who haven't yet fully recovered!

I wonder if there maybe an influx of people still wanting to come back, and whether they may have to do something to stop it in coming days weeks, as there is now community transmission in Australia, but no sign there is in NZ.

The last thing we need is our huge cohort of overseas passport holders swamping our borders in the short term as things get rough in their adopted homelands. I am hugely uneasy with Kiwis who have lived overseas for years being able to return at the drop of a hat to a country they may not have meaningfully contributed because the winds of change blew in a direction that was not in their favour.

In the medium term we are likely facing recession, high unemployment and an oversupply of labour. Adding more Kiwis swanning home to the mix will put more pressure on house prices, downwards pressure on wages and even more pressure on infrastructure.

I know you can't turn your own people away, but desperate times etc.

Source? Can't find any mention of this.

Students have been notified directly. Unsure if it is in the media.

There is no guarantee you wouldn't get it again though, as they don't know how long someone is immune to it.  I think it is best to try and not get it in the first place, by washing hands, social distancing etc.

I think you overlooked my attempt to clarify some confusion caused.

On the previous page from that for example pre-border closure announcement you were still certain of a threat. Yet it reads rather differently now (difficulty getting in all of a sudden)

I wouldn't worry too much about those numbers, as we have a lot of people coming in from overseas, and a percentage of them were always going to have it. There are going to be others as well who come back from overseas that will test positive

Certainties are not a thing with this. So caution has to be taken brandishing such paintbrushes :)

Situation has been changing drastically since Monday. (like Virgin has stopped coming here, Singapore stopping tomorrow (poss cancel now), Qantas and Jetstart stopping - leaving only Emirates (poss cancel now) and ANZ as of tomorrow for flights to Christchurch for instance)

I expect AirNZ won't be able to hold up much longer themselves and announce cutbacks.

I think anyone coming in now needs to be quarantined, not asked nicely to stay out of the way.

frednz: Now that NZ has 28 confirmed cases, with 8 announced today and 8 yesterday, would you still travel within NZ or do you think it's now too risky to do this?

Im ok with it. Its contained here, IMHO As in no known CT so far

I don't disagree, but where would they be housed in such numbers?  Self isolation is cheap and easy, but has the risk that not everyone plays ball.

All 100+ people indoor gatherings are off.

absolutely brutal, most peoples weddings just got cancelled. Unless you cut your guest list back to 99. This will make for

some awkward phone calls. Sorry you are no longer invited to join us on this special day because although you made the top 125 list

you failed to make the top 99.

Brutal? Sorry but OMG.
