Even more depressing that they're students, supposedly the "best and brightest" we have out there.

We can now land on comets and asteroids, grab a scoop, and go home. Many animal babies can look after themselves on day 2, or even at birth, like turtles. But some of us humans need a life of experience in order to learn, then its too late. As parents we educate our teens, based on our life experience. But as the number plate sticker goes "Hire a Teenager, they know everything"
I'm not anti-vaccine (I'm vaccinated)
The America's Cup veteran also highlighted several of the current regulations mandated by the government when it came to their Covid-19 response he viewed as "absurd".
Included in the examples were the 10-day quarantine still in place for international travelers, regulations around children playing sports despite being allowed to go to school, mask usage in restaurants and "contradictory rules that allow unvaccinated people to take a domestic flight (with a negative Covid test) but prohibit a young unvaccinated kid from competing in their sport (outside school)".

Not good news in the middle of a pandemic...
"Thousands of public health staff, including contact tracers and those processing Covid-19 tests, have voted to strike as the Government prepares for the rising wave of Omicron cases.
About 10,000 district health board staff will strike after 15 months of negotiations failed to reach an agreement, PSA organiser Will Matthews said. Two 24-hour strikes are planned for March 4 and 18."
You've really got to admire the chutzpah of the Union though .....
The first strike date is two weeks away so they are hoping to get the govt to put some more $$$ on the table...
lets see who blinks
and this is one reason why I despise unions with a passion and think they should be relegated to the same place in history as the dodo, the moa and DVD shops.
Everyone deserves fair pay and conditions, no question, but organising a strike at a time like this is 1000% worse than any "illegal protest" in Wellington....

To play devil's advocate it's probably the best time to strike. No point striking if they can shrug it off, get external help etc.
NB I'm not saying I agree with the proposed strikes, but like a lot of things in this country, we want all the things but we don't want to pay for it.

They won't strike. It will be called off a few days before. The whole point was to get it into the public sphere and get the public on side for a increase for people at the front line. Calling it off will get extra kudos as well.

There's been such a lot of negative campaigning against unions that you may want to reflect on how you came to that opinion, for a short summary on some current practises, see:

Protecting vulnerable is a tricky business as Hospitals tend to include a concentration of vulnerable.
I'm not sure we have same issue that dissuaded people to enter training a few years back.
Hospitals did not want recent local graduates, in favor of importing more experienced ?

A lot of my friends and colleagues are puzzled by some of the regulations around masks, MIQ etc. Inconsistency and the lack of an apparent strategy are common talking points.
The main issue that generates the most sympathy from us is the MIQ one when Kiwi's have a genuine need to get back home for personal reasons.
Of course all the examples we see are on TV are curated to provide the most emotional reaction, but it's not hard to see there are many other similar examples out there for people who don't have the same social profile but just suffer.

The medical director of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, Dr Bryan Betty has called on the Government to stop scaremongering over the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
In a statement Dr Betty said Omicron is mainly cold-like illness and probably less severe than flu.
Dr Betty said, “Omicron is highly infectious, and so a lot of people will come down with it, but the majority of people will have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, and so it is very different from the Delta situation.”
He raised a very significant concern regarding the overaction to Omicron compromising our health services ability to respond to people suffering from other more serious illness.
"On Monday the Ministry of Health issued a statement advising that of the 20.000 swabs taken in Auckland, about 80 to 90% of those that turned up, didn’t need to. This is symptomatic of our Government creating a high degree of unnecessary anxiety fear.
"The scaremongering and the fear factor is causing a huge amount of resource being unnecessarily being taken up in our health system, and in some circumstances, people are suffering dire consequences due to their inability to access urgent healthcare.
"Not only are people now fearful of domestic travel, going to restaurants and the movies, some of our most vulnerable are fearful of going to their letter box.
"Our Government must come to its senses before it’s too late. Enough is enough."
