Batman:
everything causes brain damage, if you scan the brain you see it, if you don't scan the brain, you don't see it.
from drinking alcohol to smelling petrol fumes/secondhand smoke to pesticides on your brocoli to heading a soccer ball.
if you look you will find it. covid is no exception and no different from other infections/inflammatory/toxins states. it's just that people are so obsessed with looking at everything with covid we see all these things.
i wouldn't worry too much. there are other things that cause brain damage that people don't know/care about. esp if you drink alcohol or let your kids play contact sport (soccer and heading the ball is a big one)
They were comparing it with the flu which they said doesn't cause brain damage. Not sure if a normal cold causes some brain damage. Many of the other things you list are choices people make by consuming things. Whereas people don't have a choice if they catch covid, people can take all steps not to catch it, but it will likely sneak past the defenses at some point. Contact sports are a big one that has become more of an issue recently.
But the effect of covid are not good and then we have long covid. I do wonder if the brain thing could be related to long covid, because ME and CFS is very similar and also a post viral syndrome, and experts still don't really know the cause. But many people get it after glandular fever. Many people who do get ME /CFS are high achievers who worked when they were sick and tried to push past it, and then never recovered, and some experts thing it is neurological and something to do with the brain. If any good comes from covid, it maybe solving this mystery as to what causes long covid and other post viral illnesses. At least long covid isn't denied as a condition by doctors unlike ME/CFS, which appears to almost be an identical type of post viral illness.
as far as I'm aware, inflammation and toxins both cause neuroinflammation
also as far as I'm aware, diet sleep & exercise (physical and neurological) induces brain (neuro)plasticity to heal from the constant brain "damage"
getting covid is not the end of the world. i know plenty of doctors who have had covid twice. the national party leaders have had covid. a lot of famous people have had covid.
all i'm saying is it's the media scaring people over something they may have little control over.
we are not going to see half the country turn into zombies.
those who have diabetes will continue to have diabetes. those who drink alcohol will continue to have increment brain damage. those who are the top 1% in the country will continue to be the top brains in the country. covid or not.
PS i search the flu https://www.google.com/search?q=influenza+brain+neuroinflammation
Seems we are following a similar track to Australia, 2 months later.
Though if so we have a ways to go yet on hospital numbers.

i wouldnt compare numbers yet until the health Department is clear on what is a covid case in hospital, at the moment everyone is counted even if you turn up for a unrelated illness or treatment and you test positive for covid while there.
Common sense is not as common as you think.
Vexxboy Oh understand your point on absolute number of peak.
What I am considering here is just comparatives and timelines.
As Australia was measuring on similar basis re cases and as such we get a comparable view of where we are in cycle.
No matter if number is double what should be measured its still in proportion.
If they change the way they measure it then it won't be comparable so easily if you know what I mean
Looks like my son was positive for a few days before we tested him as he gave it to me , i tested positive on friday after having negative tests for a couple of days, i have had a sore throat and sneezing, no temperature or anything else and feeling a lot better today, sore throat gone and nose is clearing up , touch wood im over the worst of it and now i wait for the other 3 in the household to catch it but so far they are testing negative after 5 days. What fun

😟 hope you all feel better soon.

it sounds like it came and went before they knew it
Unfortionalety it looks like we are getting close to the stage of double digit deaths. I read that they hadn't been planning for this number of hospitilsations from covid in Auckland and it has exceeded the modeling at this stage. I read that Victoria is starting to have another rise in cases with the second omicron variant, and you can see an uptick in cases in Oz on worldometer. Hope we don't have that here, although many of NZs cases seem to the the second variant already.

Is it the new wave the second variant? Or just that in OZ they weathered the first wave then the populous got out and about, and enlivened the existing Omicron?
I.e. I dont see it as a new variant surge, its an Omicron surge by more public activity. I guess this will keep occurring until too many people are vaccinated AND been infected. But then again it will fly in every day from overseas
Reports out of Australia say the new surge is Omicron BA.2 variant, e.g.
The proportion of the Omicron BA.2 variant in NZ is apparently on the decline. See Radio New Zealand infographics.
I wonder if BA.1 is dominant outside of northern North Island and BA.2 is dominant where infections have been established for longer.
