The reason everyone got very paranoid about a second wave is that wasterwater testing went through a huge spike 2 weeks ago, but it now appears to have gone pretty much back to where it was,,

No lockdowns, almost no mask wearing or distancing and most countries are almost back to unrestricted international travel. Current vaccines on their own can reduce symptoms and death rates, but they only slow down, but don't stop the spread.

The virus has no incentive to mutate into a cold these days, it's just competing with itself to be the top variant.

We seem to have accepted 20 deaths per day, but probably somewhere in the region of 12-15 per day average since March. If this continues we appear to be heading towards a long term death rate of more than 10x the road toll.

This is still true if we use the new method of calculating deaths which might mean the new numbers will be 23% lower.

Just like we spend billions on roads and road safety enforcement and have safety standards for cars and regular vehicle testing, if people don't want masks and other restrictions, we should probably be looking more closely at ventilation. Of course the far right will complain about ventilation too, but what are they going to do, protest outdoors about ventilation?

It's been widespread for a while now. There's already a vaccine they need to ramp up production and it doesn't spread fast like covid nor does it put loads of people into hospital so it won't have the same effect shutting down the world as covid did. Thankfully.

I suspect these viruses cause issues all the time and we're unaware. I prefer it that way actually! Covid's been enough of a pain in the backside.

The whole school and mask situation IMO was a complete mess, and resulted in unnecessary spread during winter. Good on the schools that kept the mask mandates in place, because they were far less disrupted and had more people attending. IMO it was poor that the MOH and Gov put it onto the schools to decide whether masks were needed, it shold have been a blanket rule. Now some school are only requiring mask use for the first 4 weeks. What do they think is going to happen after 4 weeks, is covid going to magically disappear. Obviously it spreads far worse over winter, as was shown in Europe, but we didn't learn, and the ventilation in schools is likely not great either, due to having to close windows over winter. IMO they should be all required to have CO2 meters in every room. IMO it should be a health and safety /Worksafe requirement in 2022 onwards.

Also does anyone know why children should now wear masks in schools, but they still don't need to wear them in supermarkets? The reason in 2020 for them not needing them in supermarkets was that the MOH said that children were far less likely to catch it and spread it, but as shown in 2021 and 22 that is not the case. I often see entire families int eh super market unmasked, where if the children needed to, I am sure thw parents would then do so as well. I wonder how many people are reporting non mask wearers, they do actually have a website to report breaches https://covid19.govt.nz/news-and-data/report-a-breach/ but guessing there isn't too much following up on it.

It doesn't matter what you implement

They still sit with each other for ~1hr at least once a day outside the classroom. More on weekends and hug with close face/mouth/breath galore.

When they did have the strict usage, school kids were STILL a big vector in circles.

Head to a mall and watch whos walking around or sitting in public areas with them off having a great time because they have a maccas drink in their hands so suddenly think exempt..

It doesn't matter. It'll still happen. And I believe we're yet to have confirmed drive by infection at supermarkets..despite the blame for source in the Auckland cases at the hotel. So it's no surprise.

- how much are the vaccines delevoped for original strain protecting from death, severe illness, hospitalizations etc for the current situation?

That data will get harder and harder to get, as you need a population of unvaccinated people to compare against. I believe it's still reasonable (as in, you're better off vaccinated than not) but don't have any data to hand.

Went to McDonalds and saw the server pickup a drink lid with fingers on both sides and slap it on. First visit to McD in a long time. Mild shock. My usual is Burger King where they are still wearing gloves. I'd guess the difference it makes is dependent on other factors it was still a surprise at the time.

McDonalds have always used bare hands since i could remember

I know this because I was shocked as a Uni student back in the day and i keep watching them in mild disgust every time i visit

it could just be my local store though

unless they change gloves regurally/after each customer it would make little difference to hygiene
