I wonder what the anti-mask brigade will have to say about this development?

A bit too soon for 6G mobile networks, I wonder what the new conspiracy theory will be for that one.

Just tell them it's going to be distributed via chemtrail, and the only way to avoid it is to wear an N95 mask.

Apparently scrapping the traffic light system altogether is on the cards.

This is not the first time we've done this - abandon a system rather than actually use the lower settings.

IMO it was always a crude system and never really worked as a system. IMO they hopefully bring in something else that allows the country to quickly pivot.

Good. The sooner masks are gone and we are given the option to wear them or not the better.

Based on how many people aren't wearing them, that already exists. It is more about protecting others IMO and reducing the spread. People with Chronic illnesses and the elderly are the ones who are going to have to pay the price of living with covid in the future. Also those people that end up developing long Covid. I've managed to remain covid free by wearing an N95 mask when in the supermarket or shops.

As somebody who has not had any encounters with it thus far. Nor like the idea of the potential to multiple times. But likely has dodged a bullet multiple times from those in the workplace attempting to share because the place I've been at insists on usage when working face to face and stringent surveillance.

Still unsure of why people have such an aversion. Guess well find out if it goes ahead and suddenly there are spikes again before boosters huh.

An environment of severe underreporting and no masks. What could possibly go wrong?

I dont see the issue with dropping it. It worked. When Covid in the community was unstoppable because we dont want lockdowns, the prime need was hospital containment, and those cases have been dropping for a good while. Those that are vulnerable, or scared of it, are free to manage their personal traffic light system.

Who isnt reporting? The public. Who are being commented about on, here, not wearing masks? The public. Who doesnt want restrictions? The public

The science suggests that there are massively more people who have had Covid than are reported, thats why its losing ground , running out of hosts

I have a colleague down with the flu, he is doing it far harder than everyone I know that has had Covid. We live with the flu, flu vaccinations are quite low, it would probably make more sense to bring in the current traffic light level, or higher, every Winter for the flu. But that would never happen due to resistance by the public. So, IMHO, its time to lose the current Traffic Light system

EDIT I dont get how we complain about the restrictions, now we complain about dropping them?

In fairness you are just taking two opposing points of view, and then saying you don't understand why the to views are opposite... 🤷‍♂️  There will forever be differing views.

Also you Flu argument is flawed, as influenza is less contagious, and causes less mortality (rates below 1%).  So you have less people having it, and are far less likely to die.  Its not even close to being comparable.

Generally NZ has taken an evidence based approach, or been slow to adopt, watching the effects in other countries before adopting the best approach.  Its worked well for us, but the mortality of this disease has dropped significantly, so a new approach is appropriate.

• The Covid-19 Protection Framework, also known as the traffic light system, will end at 11.59pm tonight.
• All mask wearing requirements removed, except in healthcare and aged care facilities.
• Only those who test positive for Covid-19 are required to isolate for seven days, household contacts no longer need to.
• All Government vaccine mandates will end in two weeks on September 26.
• Today's announcement means the removal of all vaccination requirements for incoming travellers and air crew.
