Press release:

  • The COVID-19 Protection Framework ends at 11.59pm tonight, Monday 12 September
  • All mask wearing requirements removed, except in healthcare and aged care facilities
  • Only COVID-19 positive individuals required to isolate for seven days, household contacts no longer need to
  • All Government vaccine mandates to end in two weeks on 26 September
  • Removal of all vaccination requirements for incoming travellers and air crew
  • Support for business and workers to continue through leave support payments
  • All New Zealanders aged 65 and over, and Māori aged 50 and over to have automatic access to COVID anti-virals if they test positive

The COVID-19 Protection Framework, also known as the traffic light system, will be removed from 11.59pm tonight, Monday 12 September, so all New Zealanders can continue to move forward with certainty, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced.

“It’s time to safely turn the page on our COVID-19 management, and live without the extraordinary measures we have previously used,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“Today marks a milestone in our response. Finally, rather than feeling that COVID dictates what happens to us, our lives, and our futures, we take back control.

“For the first time in two years we can approach summer with the much needed certainty New Zealanders and business need, helping to drive greater economic activity critical to our economic recovery.

“The most recent health advice now tells us that with the lowest cases and hospitalisations since February, our population well vaccinated, and expanded access to anti-viral medicines, New Zealand is in a position to move forward.

“You will no longer be required by Government to wear a mask anywhere, except in healthcare settings like hospitals, GPs and aged residential care facilities.

“Some places, such as workplaces, special events, or marae may ask you to wear a mask, but this will be at their discretion and no longer a Government requirement. Please respect those who choose to keep wearing masks as a form of protection.

“All remaining Government vaccine mandates will end in two weeks on 26 September. It will now be an employer’s discretion as to whether they require their workforce to be vaccinated.

“Vaccination requirements for all travellers arriving into New Zealand including air crew also ends, and the requirement to test on day 0/1 and 5/6 will now just be encouraged.

“Our 7 day isolation period for COVID cases will remain.

“However, the 7 day isolation period will now only be required for those who test positive for COVID-19. Their household contacts will only be asked to undertake a daily RAT test before going about their life as normal.

“In short, we now move on to a simple two requirements system of masks in healthcare settings and 7 days isolation for positive cases only,” Jacinda Ardern said.

COVID-19 Minister Ayesha Verrall also announced today a significant additional purchase of 40,000 more anti-viral medicine courses, expected to enter New Zealand in the next few days.

“We are giving greater access to anti-viral medicines for New Zealanders, and have secured agreements that provide a significant boost to our supply for the long term,” Ayesha Verrall said.

“So now, anyone over the age of 65, and Māori and Pacific people over the age of 50, or anyone who meets Pharmac requirements, can access the treatment in the early stages of contracting the virus.

“This means more than double the number of New Zealanders will be able to access these medicines if they need them than previously,” Ayesha Verrall said.

“There is no question – thousands of lives have been saved by the efforts of Kiwis. Be it iwi and Maori health providers, Pacifica organisations, aged care providers, businesses or the sacrifices of New Zealanders separated from loved ones, everyone played a part.

“So today, I say again to everyone, from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” Jacinda Ardern said.

  • From Tuesday we will now move to weekly COVID reporting, similar to Australia.
  • The current rolling 7 day average of hospitalisations is 241, the lowest since February and down from 273 this time last week. There are 225 current hospitalisations. There have been a total of 1,950 deaths, a 7 day rolling average of 5.
  • People visiting the following healthcare settings will be required to wear a mask:

    • primary care
    • urgent care
    • hospitals
    • pharmacies
    • aged residential care
    • disability-related residential care
  • The requirement excludes counselling, mental health and addiction services.
  • More information can be found at the Unite Against COVID-19 website.

Unfortunately looking at the Traveller Declaration site, it doesn't appear that's going away - though the testing requirement is.

Covid 19 mask mandates: How have other countries fared after dropping requirements? - NZ Herald

After the UK dropped almost all restrictions on July 19, 2021, England's Covid-19 infection rate experienced a gradual but concerning increase from a seven-day rolling case average of just over 41,302 on July 19, 2021, rising to 145,642 on January 7, 2022.

By January 27, the day that mask mandates were once again dropped, the seven-day case average had dropped to 77,260 but what followed was a sharp increase in infections and by February 3 the seven-day average had jumped to 184,158.

Meanwhile in the US, case numbers saw a steady increase in the months following the removal of mask mandates on public transport.

The US' seven-day Covid-19 case average rose from 41,610 on April 19, 2022, to a peak of 133,678 on July 11, 2022.

The French government's removal of mask mandates in May 2022 also aligned with an upward trend in infections.

As of May 17, a day after mask mandates were dropped, the seven-day case average was 28,535. Nearly two months later, this average had risen to 127,737 on July 8.

In other words, surprise, COVID-19 is not gone yet.

Yep. mentioned previously, I'm reasonably sure in some situations it's been the only thing stopping other people from being so kind and sharing. Willingly or otherwise

Yep we got the internal dropping of masks and mandates now too within AT; be interesting to see how the population a) reacts and b) how the virus spreads and whether we see an increase.

From a workplace perspective, the change will be varied. Quite a few corporate offices went mask free months-ago.

itxtme:

In fairness you are just taking two opposing points of view, and then saying you don't understand why the to views are opposite... 🤷‍♂️  There will forever be differing views.

Also you Flu argument is flawed, as influenza is less contagious, and causes less mortality (rates below 1%).  So you have less people having it, and are far less likely to die.  Its not even close to being comparable.

Generally NZ has taken an evidence based approach, or been slow to adopt, watching the effects in other countries before adopting the best approach.  Its worked well for us, but the mortality of this disease has dropped significantly, so a new approach is appropriate.

I do understand why they are opposing views, we seem to live in a complaining society. Do something its wrong, dont do it, its wrong. Yes there will always be opposing views on anything, but it seems more standard theme in NZ

Flu maybe less contagious, but we have a low flu tolerance right now due to lockdowns and restorations showing flu to be rare in the last 2 years, now its here. My colleagues example is just one, but if he had Covid, its highly likely to not be an issue, but hes been off well over a week with flu, still not back.

I see no issue with the dropping of the traffic light, its time

Yep. Interesting to see how many retain mask usage, I probably will at the supermarket. And if any mask wearers get finger pointed by non mask wearers. Hope not

Epidemiologists like Rod Jackson are saying that large, airy places like supermarkets where you are not in close proximity to another person for long, are safe without masks.

It’s small enclosed spaces with extended close contact such as public transport where the epidemiologists recommend keeping the masks.

The Wairarapa train has been very compliant with mask wearing, only one or two people not. Today, it's only one or two who are - the change is quite stark.

Stark, yes, but its basically March 25th 2020 now. Shows compliance was very good on the train, and now, only one or two have a desire to protect themselves.

In a general sense, the ducks have possibly lined up well for us

1. Cases dropping significantly

2. Hospital cases are 1/4 what they peaked at

3. Warming weather is a barrier for the virus

4. More people will be spending less time in enclosed spaces as Spring and Summer roll out

BUT, as stated above, masks matter, so whatever is left of Covid will have a better chance to find hosts. While immunity from infection and jabs reduce the severity, multiple infections of Covid are not uncommon. You can still inhale it, then you can still exhale it to other people

I've already worked out the mic drop

'My entire household is currently sick, under the new rules I'm allowed out but I can remove and possibly share it if you like?"

Essentially back to square one of educating people it's about the out not the in so much

I’ve asked my grandchild to wear one on her flight over as would hate her to catch something on the plane and bring it home so she spends her holiday sick. I still don’t trust planes as past experience before covid is that I would often get sick within a week after a flight, so when I fly out will be inclined to wear a mask so as not to ruin a holiday.

That's really interesting. On the Island Bay bus this morning at least 2/3rds of people were still wearing masks.

Perhaps people are more wary of the more enclosed space on a bus.
