Those of you who think this is over might want to consider the ten percent of Covid sufferers who get long Covid and don't recover from it, never mind other possible effects that emerge over time. I think I read the other day that something like 20,000 people in this country will end up disabled, possibly permanently, as a result of this.

You have said you wear a N95 type mask when you go out so im not sure what the issue is? you have protected yourself.

I was referring to the reasoning of the relevant authorities, not individuals who choose not to wear masks, but the fact is a calculation was made that the expected added number of elderly deaths were worth the political and economic benefit. I don't have a specific quote to hand, but I have seen statements from officials to this effect more than once.

What I do to avoid influenza is get the flu jab every year. I also avoid idiots who cough and sneeze in public.

The issue is that people foolishly assume Covid 19 has disappeared just because the mask mandate has been removed, and they blather on about how nice it is not to have foggy glasses. There is another perspective on that and I am expressing it.

Sorry for the colourful language but it works both ways. Those who don't want to wear masks need to consider others they may be exposing to added risk, and not just their own minor inconveniences. I wear a mask whenever I go out and my glasses also get foggy but I have learned to live with it. So can others. Complaining about this kind of thing is ignoring the inconvenient fact that others are put at added risk and that Covid has not in fact gone away. With everyone breathing on each other again, it is more likely than not that there will be another wave, maybe worse than the ones that have gone before. The virus is not standing still. It continues to evolve.

I've moderated my mask wearing; not so much in huge open areas like big box retailers where I can mostly distance, but small places like book stores or specialist shops, absolutely. Same if I were to be flying or taking public transport.

My understanding is this is how most of Asia has treated flu season for many years pre-Covid.

could be a lot sooner if some crazy guy up north does something crazy

i choose not to worry about stuff i can't control.

PS yes have had the covid, whole family have had it, mothers, great grandmothers etc, all have had the thing. wasn't pleasant.

That's a super unhelpful attitude from a public health perspective though.

A stroke or heat attack won't necessarily kill you. They might just temporarily or permanently disable you. Fun!

Edit: to say that also, getting infected is well within your control. Not 100%, but we've shown conclusively that you can significantly decrease your chances of getting it with some simple precautions.

All I'm saying is there is no need to scare monger as one or two people are stressed already, there are many things that can cause stroke and heart attack including stress itself

And no I don't believe one can avoid covid all their life, for the next 100 years of living.

There are things like vaccine, antiviral, social isolation but none of them is a guarantee

If we are out, we are masked, and we still avoid shops as much as possible, we are doing far more online now.

I have friends who have cancer, so we do all we can not to add misery to their lives.

The "its over" is only so the government does not bleed more votes, but there will be an increase in infections and deaths.

Would we be so blasé if 58 people were shot last week ?

There are things like vaccine, antiviral, social isolation but none of them is a guarantee

A seat belt is no guarantee either, in fact they have something like a 40% failure to prevent death rate.

Yet, they are compulsory.

Its not the flu, we are only just starting to understand the long term consequences (micro blood clotting in the organs, long covid, etc)

so Yeah we will do the best we can not to catch it.

It's not just the government and votes. Epidemiologists have said that masks are no longer essential outside of medical and aged care facilities. I've posted comments from Michael Baker to this effect earlier in the thread.
