LIVE | From Friday all Māori and Pacific people aged over 40 will be eligible for a second Covid booster. It remains at 50 for everyone else.

> From RNZ Twitter.

Before a high risk trip/conference for work I choose to get Novavax as my 2nd booster, 5min phone call with my doc and I had the required prescription for <50 + switching vaccine type from pfizer to novavax, no drama.

Anecdotally worked well as I was in close very proximity to several people who had or got covid during/post the trip, despite a lot of testing as far as I know I have not had it yet at all fortunately.

Batman: Have you had stealth Covid-19? This new test will tell you

Nice, useful test and you don't want to over vaccinate if you've recently had it

The gov seems to hate Rako so this won't get subsidised most likely though.

tldr; variant of the HLA genes which around 10% of people have enables fighting if off faster than it can spread

When I raised the issue of a ship of similar size coming to New Zealand ports, some here were like "I don't have a problem with this"

The Ovation of the Seas had about 4,500 people on board when it stopped around New Zealand but authorities did not disclose how many cases.

It seems the smaller Majestic Princess, which just arrived in Sydney after being around New Zealand has 800 cases on a 3,000 capacity.

So yeah, I did not like cruise ships then and now.

Global cruise operator reintroduces Covid mandates on Australian ships after surge in cases | Australia news | The Guardian

A major global cruise operator has reintroduced vaccine and mask-wearing mandates on its Australian ships due to a “rapid rise” in Covid cases across the nation.

Carnival Cruise Line issued a statement on Friday confirming that, out of an “abundance of caution”, masks would be required on vessels in public indoor spaces and some outdoor settings, including events, during embarking and disembarking and on transfers.

The measures come days after Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess cruise ship reported about 800 of its 3,300 guests testing positive to Covid-19 as it docked in Sydney last weekend.

The outbreak occurred during a 12-day cruise to New Zealand, raising the spectre of the arrival in Sydney of the Ruby Princess in March 2020 – early in Australia’s pandemic – which was ultimately linked to 28 deaths and more than 600 infections.

Princess Cruises said virus patients had been isolating and every passenger had been given a rapid antigen test in the 24 hours before arrival.

Guests who tested positive and chose to stay on the ship were required to isolate for at least five days.

"Chose to stay on the ship"

And the ship just arrived in Sydney after a visit to New Zealand.

I still think people going on cruise ships these days are gambling with their health.

Not much different to attending a large resort or conference, or a busy restaurant or bar or concert or airline flight etc. Those ships are just giant resorts that float and move around. Wearing a mask when indoors isn't a silly idea. As long as it is a proper mask, fitted properly.

Speaking of wearing a mask properly:

Under the nose and loose as a goose around the cheeks and chin. Complete waste of time there, Harry.

Covid has returned to my household via a family funeral last Thursday. My wife, her mum, aunt, uncle grand aunt and family friend all infected by another aunt who 'suspected' she may be positive but came down anyway. I'm feeling a little stabby stabby about that. So far negative for me and the kids but I can't see that staying that way for long.

So far all she says is it feels like hayfever and a mild head cold. We've all had it before on top of the double vax so hopefully it'll be a minor inconvenience.

Went to the Killers last night at Spark arena. We were the only ones masked in the 40 people or so I could see immediately around us and my friend couldn't seen anyone else wearing one on the floor.

A bit staggering really. Our first concert post-Covid and a real eye-opener to how we've just all decided to wear repeated infections and hope for the best.

I think if you go to that concert even with a mask on you have decided to wear repeated infections. Masks are not 100% effective (surgical masks perhaps 60% effective, cloth masks much less, improperly fitted masks almost useless). N95 masks are much better, but a rock concert with an N95 mask on just doesn't appeal at all to me. Densely packed people shouting and singing to their hearts content in a perhaps not greatly ventilated space is as bad as it gets.

Agreed, I suspect it's one of those situations where even if you're doing the right thing by masking up, that is easily undone by the thousands of people who do not.

I've had a recent bout of it so I'm probably still able to get away with the surgical mask and immunity, but anyone there who didn't have it before now almost certainly does after that.

I wouldn't count on that, check out the recent reinfection numbers/% (It's about 20-25%)
