So flattening the curve is a disaster.  We need to eradicate this disease.

Exactly. I am not sure why we are even entertaining the idea that flattening the curve is the best case for us. We are supposed to be in the 'stamp it out phase' according to the stuff website at least. TH eonly way to do that is get people isolated from one another so they can't spread it. Some people are not doing what they should be doing and self isolating, or doing it  properly, and you only need a few of these to cause CT.

True, but why are aircraft landing and bringing more in? To date, they allow them in, we count them a few days later at 1pm. There isn doctor petition asking fir Alert Level 4. We are aghast at the 14 or so per day we see. Where do they come form? The airport. Surely we close the airport and while there, we also shut down domestic flights, see how that goes.

A letter is being signed now by doctors (only) up and down this country requesting that the Govt move immediately to Phase 4.  And yes, I signed it.

From how I understand it, it appears initially only areas that testing shows there could be CT, may move to level 3 or 4. But how many cases are now CT possibilities?

They bringing citizens home and tourists back to their countries. I thought you had no concerns about incoming flights a few days ago.

You mean LEVEL 4

I like the idea of the Government giving everyone a Phase IV GTHO Falcon as part of a stimulus package but I can't see it getting past the Greens.

Still no announcement about the Olympics and the NRL is apparently going to persist. What total knobs.

Errrr. The message all along has been exactly that. Carers have been advised how to protect those who can't. You can still take precautions and have separation and use the guidelines to ensure safe interactions when required. Or request it of others if in a need-help position.

2m, No lingering. appropriate PE when required. Job done.

This thing is on water droplets, mostly from the mouth. Into the mouth and eyes.  Hear/see a cough. GTFA

It's not proven to be the midas touch where if someone walks by the next 20ppl are certain to get it. Being near someone doesn't ensure it. Touching a random surface doesn't ensure it.

The current medical system still existing is tribute to what taking precautions on yourself and avoiding infections to date can do.

Common sense. It's a thing. Time everyone is putting in to point out how garbage our government is handling it and other things us armchair experts think should be/could be done better is better put to use by getting out and looking after yourself and immediate family or planning how to deal with the varied changes on the horizon.

Well said. As you imply, its not that easy to catch. The measures that we are given daily are very easy.

MikeB4: @gchui one thing I would love to get is an answer regarding continuing to take Humira during this outbreak. I have received yes, no maybe.

The advice I am giving to my patients on biologics such as Humira is that you stay on it, and if you isolate now as you should have already, and don't have any potentially infectious contact with anyone you will be fine.

The issue about stopping it, and that depends on what condition you have been prescribed it for, is that you may relapse and then need to go onto corticosteroids to bring whatever condition you have back under control.

And we consider corticosteroids a worse option in terms of infection with sars-cov-19 as it leads to worse outcomes.

But you should talk to the person who prescribed it to you.

well if you have the choice of going out of business and or trying to carry on to survive , there is only 1 choice for the NRL

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Jeff Bezos just sent to employees about the coronavirus: "Things are going to get worse before they get better" Of course for Jeff is laughing all the way to the bank. Amazon is hiring an additional 100,000 warehouse workers to keep up.

Walmart already has a GDP greater than a lot of countries, including all of Australia. It's on-par with Switzerland.

Costco is a massive membership discount seller (kind of like Pak 'N Save, if Pak 'N Save sold everything). Costco is the "go to" place for stockpiling. Many have had the shelves stripped bare from panicked buying.

Costco and Walmart are notorious for bad pay, and always actively avoiding giving employees paid leave and paying benefits. They been accused of abusing contractor and part-time workers laws nationwide to the mega-corporation's benefit

There's been reports Costco and Walmart at both from anonymous employees with obvious symptoms, interacting heavily with customers. They are showing up at work and not having tests, because they can't afford the tests, don't want to confirm they are sick, and can't afford not to work.

Jim Cramer on coronavirus impact: Amazon, Walmart, Costco could be only retailers left

Perhaps the criteria A or B   AND C or D  included contact wth travellers, if so, I stand corrected.

As for the nurse, whose fault is that? It was by the book, until revised after by the PM, so the rest home is at fault.

News is on, another surge in Covid-19 in NZ. It should say another updated count of airport arrivals that developed symptoms as they were infected when already in the aircraft. They need to do something about this. We are importing cases daily from the airport, then counting them a few days later

dogstar001: I am beginning to wonder if the lower the curve thing is a waste of time? I think we may have to go full China on it & stamp it out or just accept the 100,000 deaths.

China hasn't stamped it out.

Even if we did that, imagine that we're an island of 100% uninfected people in a world awash with covid-19. We would need to close our borders for 18 months or more. Every person entering would need to prove they're not carrying it, or do 2 weeks quarantine. Goodbye tourism industry. Every Kiwi leaving would be at risk of catching it, and 20% would I guess need repatriation for hospitalization. Maybe, hopefully, within 18 months there would be a vaccine or the disease would have petered out. But maybe it would take longer.

Flattening the curve would mean 28k deaths, but that's unavoidable.

This article discusses potential of future red and green zone countries with limited trade and travel...

Stuff Coronavirus: Hamilton nurse denied test despite displaying Covid-like symptoms

It comes as Dr Ashley Bloomfield says Healthline is ‘overloaded’ with people calling for the wrong reasons.

A registered nurse displaying Covid-19-like symptoms was denied a test at a Hamilton testing station because she had no known contact with the virus.

It left Gina Kerewaro wondering how the Ministry of Health can say there had been no community transmission if it wasn't testing widely.

But refusing her test was exactly the right thing to do, according to the director-general of health.

Kerewaro had been unwell and went to see her general practitioner, who prescribed her antibiotics and did not send her for Covid-19 testing.

Yet she decided to go to the Hamilton testing station, which opened at Claudelands Events Centre on Saturday, as she wanted to rule out coronavirus after being in contact with family from Australia before the travel ban was in place.

After waiting two hours and ticking all the symptom boxes, she was told she did not meet the criteria for a test as she had not been in contact with a confirmed case.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed that for people to be tested they had to have been in close contact with a probable, confirmed or suspected case or have a history of overseas travel.

"We should not be and we can't be testing everyone with symptoms," he said in response to a question about Kerewaro's concerns.

gchiu: We seriously need to get a coalition war time govt in place. The labour led coalition are making too many mistakes that we are all going to pay heavily for.

For the 43rd time, MoH is driving this. Not the PM. PM and every other MP is not qualified. As to the management of this crisis, both communication and financial management Im more than happy with.

I can't help but feel NZ is squandering their chance...or has already.

I don't get it...we know how this thing plays out just by looking at the other countries that had it before NZ.

Thank you for that. I am in self imposed isolation. I am trying not to bug my doctors at this time. I confess I have a lot of anxiety and isolation will lead to depression.
