The alternative is we return to normal and Jacinda says ' the economy is more important , I know this decision will cost X lives' and we just suck it up

I understand WHO says that isn't an option.

IMO NZ had no option to do what they are currently doing.

Batman:

so 90-95% of cases are coming from the international flights

someone explain why the lockdown if the flights are continuing to come in without quarantine?

There has been no announcement that international flights are banned. The number of flights will naturally (commercially) reduce as demand decreases and/or other governments ban access to their air space or transiting rights (eg Australia, Singapore, UAE) . Air NZ's own web site still states they are providing international services to a number of destinations  and only some routes are suspended eg Vancouver (and even then not until 30th March) https://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/travel-alerts?eventid=nGWrd6Uk8TvvDmaKSRjr

There are barely any flights back from Europe now, only really Qatar Airways currently.  Daughter arrived back from UK (self isolating with me direct from CHC) on Monday, and the final Emirates flight landed Tuesday.

Some information on quarantine for returning NZers here:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120560483/coronavirus-update-pm-jacinda-ardern-to-hold-press-conference-at-3pm

New Zealand will quarantine most Kiwis returning to New Zealand from abroad, under strict new border measures to control the spread of coronavirus.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Kiwis who show symptoms or cannot appropriately travel to an approved place of self-isolation will be held in quarantine, at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

There were articles in the media yesterday suggesting that they were looking at using hotels as quarantine facilities, transporting arrivals directly there.

We are all in a type of quarantine - except essential service workers.

On Checkpoint last night Jacinda said that people who live alone are allowed to have one close contact, but it's unclear whether there will be restrictions on driving distances.

sounds like yes, as I'm planning to do the same few times over the lockdown. But there's delima: person I'm seeing, she lives with 2 kids (15 and older) and her mother... and I don't want to pass on anything to them :( we have not come to the conclusion what would be best to do... I think isolation and exclude all the contact, she insists that we be fine :(

The problem with this extended bubble idea is that if everyone is in lockdown together, then if one person has the virus it is likely to spread quickly through the household and everyone is clear (or an isolated positive case) by the end of 28 days.

But with an extended bubble that meets occasionally, the first person with the virus might have little or no symptoms and they only pass the virus on the 10-14th day and this slows the progression, but don't stop that last person from being infectious at the end of the 28 days.

I'm expecting we will see either an extended lockdown, or a perhaps a brief period of freedom where we visit the office, do our less essential shopping and access other services and then another lockdown as the active cases climb back up past 100~200 again.

PM said there are too many. And they are Kiwis we cant shut them out. I forget if she stated or implied that there will be harsher measures such as quarantine when numbers reduce. Its a known risk that we have to endure. They tested 100 one day, 8 infections. Plus what about the other few thousand? Plus the infected with no symptoms? Thats why I ignore the daily new cases that are all from planes. Are these flights being canned tonight or not do you know?

nope flights are not canned.

if they had quarantined from 2 weeks ago we won't have to shut down. we had all the time in the world.

instead we watched it rise and rise and rise so then we test and test and test until we found CT and then we shut down, spend up 100 billion dollars, make half the businesses hang by a thread and there is still no quarantine.

i still do not understand the logic.

someone explain.

Sounds like that's what Trump wants to do in the US.

If we start have extended bubbles then we may as well give up and try summit else. A bubble is say you, and your parents. Thats it. Maybe your partner, but that's it, no one joins and no one leaves, thats it. Otherwise no point. All of us must stay in ONE bubble

Very poor advice was given to the Govt, and their inability to seek independent corroboration, is the only explanation.

Why do the TV people think they are more important than the PM addressing the nation?

Cutting across from an unfinished live address back to a newsreader, whats with that?

b/ Incoming passengers are forced to go into a government run camp for 14 days

There needs to be 14 camps, one for each day of the isolation arrivals to go to.

isolation/quarantine is basically putting someone in a hotel room and putting a childrens door monitor on the other side of the door(they open the door, an alarm goes and the guards on that floor are aware). Food is left at the door, you text or call the room and tell them the food is outside and they get it one at a time to avoid risking anyones safety. That way you can have people at various levels of isolation with minimal risk.

It’s not an antipattern. It’s just a pattern you don’t want to replicate. Still just a pattern though.

One News New Zealand border 'unlikely' to reopen within three months - Health Minister David Clark

Last night it was announced anyone who wasn't a permanent resident or citizen, or a partner or child of, was banned from entering the country.

It was brought in last night and effective for any flights departing for New Zealand past 11.59pm NZT.

The ban comes after last week's requirements for anyone entering the country to self-isolate.

But it quickly became clear it wasn't a practical solution, with groups of tourists refusing to follow the rules.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters says most of the 28 confirmed cases have been New Zealanders returning from overseas.

...When asked how long people could expect the restrictions to be in place, Dr Clark told Breakfast it could be months.

"We need to prepare for the fact it's not going to be next week, and it's unlikely within the next three months," he says.

"It's looking like longer term... We are going to be in this for the long haul.

"There will be a future time when tourists can visit New Zealand again, but now is not that time."

In my case it will be someone who lives alone interacting with someone else who lives alone. I think that was the prime minister's intention, although she may not have been explicit about that.
