yet Michael Osterholm says the surgical masks are a complete waste of time
1. Surgical masks help prevent transmission
2. N95 masks help prevent catching it
Listen to the podcast: I think he is trying to avoid people thinking that a surgical mask makes you bulletproof, or that being social is safe if you wear a mask. He also calls it that they are not available... I think that given that some full population sampling (Princess Cruise, and Vo) show 50% of people are presymptomatic or asymptomatic, we should ideally be wearing at least surgical masks (if they were available) to help those that don’t know they have Covid19 from spreading it. A 50% win sounds pretty good to me.
Note also in that same section he says washing hands is probably a waste of time - because transmission vector is respiratory (duhhh). Yet all our media and fear is concentrating hard on washing hands.

Dial111: The US with close to 117k cases shot straight passed Italy is surely the epicentre now.
"This fool will bring the death of thousands needlessly" - former White House advisor on pandemics, quoted in The Atlantic.
afe66: I wonder how many of the brave experts here would be prepared to volunteer at a rest home.
Personally I think your presumption is rude. My partner is a nurse: if she gets it, I get it. Doesn’t make me brave, but it does make me care a bit more than most (for us both) - which is why I have spent significant time studying the topic. I have been able to see second hand the developing response of the government, or it’s lack, via her.
Edit: We also have to least one doctor here, who is going to be front line if we get smashed.

You need qualified volunteers. There are many in this times applying to help - but it's only a help, when qualified ;-)
- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX
- SRV: HA server cluster, 0.1PB storage capacity on premise
- IoT: thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D: two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter
People are so focused on masks! Just keep your distance, the droplets are heavy & fall quickly.
I'm more worried about catching it off a surface. I haven't seen any reports or guesses to the percentage catching it from a surface verse droplets.
freitasm:Meanwhile, in America, Trumpers and far-right wingnuts are running a campaign of disinformation targeting Dr Fauci.
Isn't that a standard Trump tactic though? When faced with facts he doesn't like, he declares it fake news, a Democrat conspiracy, or if all else fails, invent whatever "facts" he needs about the other side to distract everyone. The last one is particularly effective, because the media then has to go out and fact-check everything in order to say "there is no evidence that (whatever Trump just made up) ever happened". So Trump can invent facts as fast as he can tweet, while the media can take several days to show he's made them up. A good example of this was his story about Bloomberg requesting a box to stand on during debates where, instead of being able to immediately dismiss it as just the latest presidential fantasy, the media all had to go out and check with sources to confirm that Bloomberg never said this before they could report it that way.
When one side is constrained by having to play by the rules and the other side can make up anything they want with no repercussions, it's a pretty uneven fight.

Are you really taking medical advice from the Joe Rogan podcast? I would suggest in the strongest terms possible that you don't do that.
gchiu:"Some of the keyboard warriors are currently unwilling to accept that China has to a large extent managed to stamp out COVID-19 and is opening up for business. My own Kiwi-China networks all confirm that China really is getting back to work, albeit not yet fully there."
Naah, I have it on good authority from randonclown123 on Facebook that the plumes of smoke and smog that have re-emerged over Chinese cities in the last week or so are the Chinese government secretly burning bodies of the vast numbers of people still dying that they're hiding from us.
It's unbelievable the complete lunacy that people will believe. And they're so caught up in their crazy conspiracies that they don't even consider thinking about what the real reason for smog starting up again would actually be.
Probably believe whatever Trump says as well...
MikeB4:It is obvious that you didn't even read her post before pulling out your high horse to jump atop
Maybe we need a -1 vote ability alongside the +1. Comments like the OP's are certainly calling for it.
Jase2985:i suspect wearing to go grocery shopping wouldn't go down to well though.
Yeah, that's an interesting point, I've got something close to a full-face respirator (solvent-based spray painting) but I'd look like something out of a SciFi film if I went to the shops in that. Not sure what sort of reaction it'd get from other shoppers, in terms of scaring people that something serious is about to, or has, happened.

The "Voice of Thunder" channel is a bit dubious, and he doesn't seem to be a doctor, and certainly not a infectious disease expert.
I'd take his commentary with a grain of salt.
lies, damned lies, and statistics.

The difficult we can do immediately. The impossible takes a bit longer. But Miracles you will have to wait for.
Handle9:It's happening in NZ as well. A landlord with a clue will be supporting their tenants as best they can, it's not like you'll be able to let it to anyone in this climate.
Friend of mine who rents got a call from their landlord saying, in effect, don't worry if there's problems paying the rent, we'll sort something out once this is over.
For every dickhead there's hundreds or maybe thousands of people who aren't, but you only hear about the idiots.

Several folks I know in different US states, who work as first responders or are classed as essential, have reported being issued passes to allow them through army checkpoints if martial law is declared. I realise it's just a precautionary thing, but it's a pretty serious precaution.
From The Times
"Britain must remain in full lockdown until June if it is to avoid the worst effects of the coronavirus, the government’s leading epidemiology adviser warned last night.
As the virus claimed its 1,000th life in the UK — a doubling of the death toll in just three days — Professor Neil Ferguson said in an interview that the entire population could need to stay at home for nearly three months."
Let us hope that does not come to pass here because I fear for our collective sanity if it does, never mind our economy.
The amount of money and effort being expended on a vaccine for this thing should be as close to limitless as we can get. The cost to the world economy and to society worldwide if we cannot prevent recurrence means that a vaccine development effort should have as many billions and as many scientists as it needs. Without it, we will be in and out of lockdown forever unless we seal the border of NZ airtight and insist on 100% quarantine for all arrivals, even ourselves.
