This is a very good move from the Reserve Bank. It basically stops the Australian parent from capital stripping during the crisis and maintains the liquidity of the NZ banks.

You need to work on your sense of humour receptors.

Apologies, I don't think my comment was ageist. At least I didn't intend it to be.I though I made a valid point. Some countries Sweden & USA have followed this line of reasoning & are staying open. As I just said if this thing can't be stamped out in 4-6 weeks. Where does that leave us?

Because the USA is doing a fantastic job of keeping people healthy and alive ATM... *looks for a key back from the parallel universe*

The government has indicated that, for now, if the 4 week restriction doesn't work as well as expected, we will keep going. And frankly we can afford to -- government debt to GDP is still very low by world standards. The banks have plenty of room to take haircuts (and frankly should be made to). We should not be haphazardly trading money for lives like we are desperate to enact some Nozickian or Randian hyper-individualistic wet dream.

I agree. People come first, we can all work towards economic recovery later.

We don't have a bach, instead we plan on staying home all weekend and eating chocolate eggs. Probably watch too much Netflix as well.

dogstar001: I'm gonna stop posting here, I'm not liked. apologies if I offended anyone. I genuinely didn't intend to. I just feel as a society we have some very tough decisions moving forward. good look

I assume you meant good luck. There is no issue with having one view or another, but if you feel that bugger the oldies, then you need to expect the response. Lets say COVID-19 only attacked the young, lets say under 40's. You are 35. Would you be happy with the 41+ YO's saying to you, well that's a bitch, can you leave me your chainsaw and hedge trimmer as you are not worth it? Thats what you said to the elders, here and everywhere. I thought we got over racism, now its ageism.

And, for many deaf people who use NZSL as their first or preferred language, NZSL is the only way to access information.

For people who aren't familiar with the difference between the overall BANZSL (British/Aus/NZ Sign Language) and NZSL, there are slight differences to express concepts like "fush and chups" where the motion of the palm is a bit rounder than for "fish and chips", and "yeah nah" and "chur bro" which is difficult to express in, say, BSL.

Fush n Chups??? Im a Kiwi, unlike other countries I dont have an accent, just they do!

On a serious note, I am in awe of the sign people. Im in ChCh, when the EQ's were happening, the main sign person was Jeremy. One night when us EQ neighbours were have a few cold ones, Jeremy was there, a brother of one of our mates. They are awesome. To us able people, its just quite cool, but of you are disabled, and can benefit that's huge. We take sight and hearing for granted.

And just to put some numbers on it. the worldometer death rate from coronavirus for my age group is 3.6%. The NZ MoH stats for deaths in my age group from any causes is .658%.

So if we follow dogstars proposal  I now have a 4.258% chance of dying this year or roughly 1 in 25 compared to a 1 in 151 chance of death this in a normal year.

Given that (IMHO) we are well ahead of things, if any in the vulnerable group have issues, we "should" be able to attend to them sooner than later. Many overseas stats also include fatalities due to late attention. O no attention. I feel and hope that won't be an issue here, or less an issue.

They will stop when Trump sees this will impact his election prospects.

The thing is, I don't know if it will. The MAGA-hatters will keep voting for him and those who already don't like him will keep voting against him. I'm not sure if there'll be much change in the status quo.

USA is screwed. The lads and I were planning another road trip, we have each been there, lets have a boys trip this time. But forget it. 2022 maybe at best. Denial, then all of a sudden it's bad. It seems a very short time ago, a case was found in Washington state, a small town, No idea how. And same 50 miles away, no idea how. That seems just a few short weeks ago, now look at it. Its the worst case of negligence I can think of. And I love the place, spent a lot of time there, its screwed.

I think @dogstar001 probably has a valid point he's wanting to make, just not doing a great job making it.

A 4-6 week lock down is a major inconvenience for most, and an employment ending issue for many. But I think most are in agreement that it needs to be done.

But what happens if it doesn't work, or it appears to work and then we get another huge spike a couple of weeks after the lockdown is lifted? So we have another lockdown. Rinse and repeat.

How long can that continue? The likes of Trump are prematurely beating this drum, but there may come a point where some very difficult decisions will need to be made - because how long can you shut down a country for before it can't recover?

I certainly don't have an answer.

I get that. How I see it, is that if we allow it to go rampant, it will hurt for a long long time. SARS hurt, but it didn't. It was deadly but it caused few cases with few deaths, comparitively speaking. No huge damage, yet it went for 8 months. If this goes for 8 months, well, thats devastating. IF NZ can suck it up, even for 8 weeks of level 4, it will smother it. Heavy short term damage is better than heavy long term damage. IMHO.
