I've seen two face masks in as many days lying around on the side of the foot path. I hope no one tries to recycle them.

It appears we have practicing GPs losing their jobs in the middle of all this. Surely they can be redeployed elsewhere?Im sure than can be but where? Right now we are not being overwhelmed by the virus. The bigger question is why are GP practices becoming non viable?
Geektastic:
Essentially because we aren’t getting sick and injured so we aren’t visiting them and paying them, if I understood correctly.
Im unaware the virus, that rarely so far impacts Kiwis, nor has a beneficial effect on health. GP's not usually deal with falling off ladders, they deal with ailments. Have ailments stopped?

I suspect people don't want to go into waiting rooms where you can be waiting over half an hour, when someone in that waiting room may have the virus. Plus people have been told to not make unneeded travel, and many maybe checkups or for things that aren't that important, that they can't wait. .
On GPs lower income.
I expect that all the preventative maintenance that people do has gone down to zero as well.
Travel vaccinations have disappeared.
People with common aches and pains also thinking maybe not that serious and delay appointment.
Unfortunately some might actually be indicators of something more serous, but many will delay if they can.
Plus the accidents and such.
Renewal of prescriptions were also a good opportunity for practice to suggest a visit, but right now people would rather not.
So it could add up.
All the best Pete,

In a lot of Asian countries the poor do recycle the cloth masks. They pick them up off the ground or out of bins. Take them home wash them then resell them.

The difficult we can do immediately. The impossible takes a bit longer. But Miracles you will have to wait for.
kingdragonfly: I think we're getting an outbreak of "pedantry syndrome."
Most people would have no idea that the expression "shoot the messenger" originated with ancient Chinese history. I doubt you did, till you Googled it.
I doubt anyone thought "the Chinese approach to Covid-19 management" wouldn't have construed it was about the current Chinese government.
That is a very bad assumption. gchiu has a doctorate in medicine and quite possible several other well earned and learned letters suffixed to his name. Therefore is an educated person. He may have taken a minor in sociology where useless bits of knowledge like that is a requirement e.g. "I think, therefore I am"

Racist views? What about your views of the CCP?
People on many of the youtube videos I've watched (Simone Gao) included, call it CCP virus which although inaccurate fairly lays the blame on the right people.

There are lots of things you can't do in telemedicine, and the practice managers may not want people coming in for routine visits.
Furthermore, the lockdown is likely stopping the transmission of other transmissible infections such as influenza, common colds, and STDs. The Govt is providing a package to help support GP practices ( but not specialists! ) to keep them going until the tsunami hits. Hopefully we have retreated behind the blue lines.

You need to get a bit more selective about your YouTube channels ;)
Yeah, one of her regular guests seems to be Steve Bannon. I've stopped watching her though youtube keeps promoting her channel.
kingdragonfly: I'm not unsympathetic about the racism caused by the virus, and its push-on effect to intimidation and violence against all Asians, not just Chinese
Whether it's Trump daily dose of lies, or the Chinese government ignoring advice before the outbreak on "wet markets" and a delayed response, few if any leaders will both react quickly and be 100% honest publicly.
When things go bad, leaders want the voters to conveniently forget about their involvement in past events. Trump does it; XI does it; everyone does it.
If it's any comfort, there are obvious reason why Scott Morrison reacted pretty quickly. He is definitely racist against Chinese, and really needed a distraction from his miserable performance around the Australian wildfires. It's a classic "do the right thing for the wrong reasons."
I think we all will agree Xi and the communist party's response is many times better than previous events.
All wars bring out the worst and the best in humanity.
Keep up the good work, doc.
I'd say let's watch this space. Rumours are banned from this thread but if you read widely you will know what I mean. Just hold that thought ...

Not at all. If you’re not sure, look up the definition of racism.
The ethnic origin of person and/or their products that they were allegedly hoarding is also morally irrelevant and, for that reason alone, the gratuitous reference to "Hispanic" was unnecessary and inappropriate. But you feel free to carry on with your little crusade.
C’mon - it’s nothing more than a pun, Hon. Nothing remotely approaching a crusade, let alone your attempted belittling ‘little crusade’ jab. No need to invoke the Punic Wars.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
