""War" is one of those terms that is often abused. I hope we're not at war, because, as the saying goes, the first casualty is truth. And "war" becomes an opportunity to force on the populace unpleasant things that the government deems important or at least useful. And often those things hang around long after the "war" is over.

But it's incumbent on the Police especially to behave lawfully. They should know what their powers are, and shouldn't order surfers (or anyone else) around unless they're legally empowered to do it. Otherwise they'll lose the confidence of the populace. If there is a need for the Police to order surfers out of the sea, let the appropriate governmental process (I don't know what's required to create a law under the a National State of Emergency) happen.

Mahon:

I wish cyclists would keep off walking tracks. They are rude and dont try and social distance from people that may be walking. Surely the roads are where cyclists should be with them being so quiet. I have always found cyclists to be generally hypocritical. They continually moan about cars yet their behavior toward walkers is quite bad. Its not just me noticing this..it is widespread.

I think many are shared. But imo as a cyclist, is that at this time they should solely be for walkers due to many being narrow. Personally I wouldn't ride on one because of the physical distance problem and this should be common sense.

People shouldn't be using walking tracks for walking either right now. They offer no means to allow a 2m separation if someone wants to pass, or is coming in the opposite direction.

The 2m separation thing is for long-term exposure, e.g. if you're in a queue at the supermarket. I expect people passing each other on a track will avoid close contact for the few seconds where they're < 2m apart.

Hmmm....keep seeing the same car repeatedly going past every 10 minutes or so.

(Maybe learner driver - as "L" plates are displayed)

Not essential travel!

nzkiwiman:

I don't get how some of these clusters are still growing; the conference from Queenstown was 3 weeks ago so how are new cases still coming from that cluster. I thought 14 days later you were all good to go

Given you can start infecting others about 3 days after you're infected, 14 days could represent 5 generations of the virus. But there are cases where apparently a person is contagious over 14 days after infection.

So you almost certainly are good to go. And the people you infected might be too. But the people *they* infected might not be. And the people *they* infected probably aren't. And the people *they* infected are almost certainly still contagious.

Hence, it's not only the 4-week lockdown that's important, but also keeping bubbles small, so that a chain of asymptomatic infections within any bubble can't extend beyond 4 weeks.

tdgeek:

Its effectively Community Transmission, where we find out later that Mr X at the conference, saw Mrs Y  then who saw Ms X who is a new case. But as we see the cause its not classified as "CT" but it works the same. Each one takes days to have symptoms. This is why the 4 week lockdown is crucial. Every Kiwi can have the virus , can't easily spread the virus and will be free of it in the month.

Hmmm... I'm not sure, but I think the definition of CT is that it is through the community, with no known path. If you can identify the path, then I think it becomes an overseas-sourced infection.

Done!

Funny how after I stood in wait, with camera ready, took photos obviously, he hasn't been back.

(Was every 10 minutes or so. Now over 40 minutes since last pass!)

Or we could make the lockdown easier to bear, keep stores open with fewer hours, go to work, but say no OT, that will help businesses. Problem with that is this thread will still be alive and well 8 months down the road. Talking about overwhelmed hospitals, deaths, instead of drink flouters.

If we do the 4 weeks well, things might ease. Or 6 weeks and higher likelihood of bigger easing. Or make it long term.

I think the 'lockdown playbook' really needed a bit more thought put into it for SMEs than it got before we ended up in Stage 4. Things like commercial rents, rates, creditor cycles etc don't just go away. Still haven't had any guidance about IRD stuff other than "Contact us to make a payment plan, we might remit interest but we're still working on it, by the way we're not answering the phones".

If we end up locked down again, I would hope the plan isn't just to give us another wage subsidy and leave it at that. It's pretty clear the country needs a framework for hibernating businesses, including the option to suspend all payment obligations with the exception of payrolls. How you would do that legally I have no idea, but it's hard to believe it's not a ready-made go-to plan after the earthquakes etc.
