No doubt many of the people in the supermarket entry queues will be working non-standard hours, shopping after a night shift. The queues do seem to be worse in the early mornings. I don't doubt this is introducing many stresses. Separate issue from the unwarranted abuse of course.

Sometimes it is hard to know whether to laugh or cry. This is from the Daily Telegraph:

"Another defiant pastor, Kelly Burton of Lone Star Baptist Church in Lone Star, Texas, wrote on Facebook: "Satan is trying to keep us apart, he's trying to keep us from worshipping together. But we're not going to let him win."

In the state of Kansas Republican political leaders overturned an order by the Democrat governor Laura Kelly limiting religious gatherings to 10 people.

That will allow church services to go ahead on Easter Sunday. The governor said it would cost lives."

vexxxboy: ... it is why the Italians had such a high death rate

Italy's fatality rate is actually significantly lower than the UK fatality rate.

No commentary on the road toll this year.. Every year there is no comparison between lives and traffic patterns. Rain = less people heading away less accidents etc..

Can see next year headline saying how large the increase is compared to this year...

Surely with no long drives this year the toll should be basically zero...

Driving with no traffic on the road is basically weird. This is something many people have not experienced..it would not surprise me if we get some fatalities as a result. Alcohol and unrestricted speed playing a part as usual.

Comparing case numbers and deaths between countries isn't much use - comparing trends perhaps, to try and make sense of how social distancing rules are working etc.  There's hopelessly inadequate testing (either due to lack of resources or the will to do it), no global standard for reporting COD - and plenty of scope to manipulate figures by under-reporting. And then there's the "politics" of leaders wanting to show how great and clever they are.

We're only going to be able to assess overall mortality when this is over - by comparing overall recorded seasonal deaths pre and post Covid.  IOW not much better than we could do 100 years ago.

An excellent simulation of the results of Republican's virus strategy

You'd have to allow for the higher ratio of idiots in those who are still driving. Locally it is so quiet you can hear the occasional cars being driven at excessive speed. One idiot rolled his car on the beach leading to an ambulance getting stuck in the sand.

Those defiant pastors and their (presumably) Republican congregations may well end up providing an excellent demonstration of how evolution trumps creationism as they are manifestly unfit to survive in the real world.

Mayor's response is contender for greatest understatement of all time.

New York Times: After Months of Denial, Russia Admits the Virus Is Taking Hold

The mayor of hard-hit Moscow acknowledged that “the situation is becoming increasingly problematic.”

The authorities in Moscow said on Friday that coronavirus cases are increasing rapidly here and have already pushed the city’s health care system to its limit.

Warning that the outbreak in the Russian capital was far from reaching its peak, Anastasia Rakova, a deputy mayor responsible for health, said that the number of people hospitalized with the illness related to the virus in Moscow had more than doubled over the past week to 6,500. Nearly half of those infected are under the age of 45.

The city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, sounded a further alarm, saying that the virus “is gaining momentum” and that “the situation is becoming increasingly problematic.”

A flurry of bad news on Friday about the outbreak indicated that Russia, relatively spared until now from the ravages of the virus, has started on the same harrowing path taken weeks ago by hard hit countries like Italy and now the United States. This has dashed hopes in the Kremlin that its decision in late January to close Russia’s long border with China, the original source of the virus, and then limit travel from Europe had contained the outbreak.

President Vladimir V. Putin, who usually takes the lead with great fanfare in times of crisis, has mostly stayed in the background. He has retreated to his country residence outside Moscow, leaving Mr. Sobyanin, the mayor, and Russia’s prime minister, Mikhail Mishustin, to take the heat for a health crisis that now looks set to get far worse.

Ms. Rakova, the Moscow official, warned that the capital’s ambulance service and hospitals were now stretched to the limit. The virus has also started to wreak havoc in Russia’s vast hinterland, where the ramshackle health system seems to be contributing to the spread of the pathogen.

...Deviating from previous official assurances that Russia is well prepared for a possible crush of patients, the health minister, Mikhail Murashko, on Friday warned that the country’s health care services were now “experiencing stress regarding supplies,” including the supply of personal protection equipment and ventilators.

And with Mr. Putin having scored a propaganda coup recently by sending planeloads of such medical supplies to a variety of countries, including the United States, the reports of shortages could become a sore point.

gzt: The Herald is reporting abusive clueless people all over the place abusing medical staff at the supermarket entry because of queue policy:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12324219

So health care workers get applauded overseas and abused here. That seems pretty poor to me.

Maybe some of the abusers are dealing with great stress of their own and are lashing out because of that. Maybe some are just selfish pigs who can't think of anyone but themselves. Whatever the reason, there is no excuse. It is shameful behaviour. Maybe nurses should just say okay, we will wait until you finish your shopping, and when you come to the ED, you can wait until I finish my lunch break.

There's a rumor going around on twitter that Trump is going to lift the lock downs on July 4th. Not sure where the rumor originated. I could kinda see it. By then you'd hope the U.S. have well and truly bent the curve and they should in theory be through the worst of it provided there isn't a second wave in the fall.

Trump hasn't done any lockdown... it has all been done by the State governors, and to some extent the counties where the governor failed to act (e.g. Florida).

So I'd say that rumour would be wrong. But perhaps Trump might lift the ban on flights to/from Europe and/or China.
