Off the top of my head, I think yesterday there were 8 confirmed and 9 probable.
It'll be interesting to see if many of the probables are eventually removed from case totals.  I think up to about 1/3 of actual cases test negative from one swab, some test negative from multiple swabs. I don't know if they re-test using a serological test even if that's also got flaws - would seem like a reasonably good idea to me, but I don't know.

Isolating people with "suspected" C-19 even if it turns out to have been some other respiratory infection is a pretty good move.

Was that in questions, which I missed. A good move, conservative. You will always fail on the side of over estimating, which is by far the safest way.

No - just my opinion and I think an expected result of having "probable" cases an overestimate of eventual confirmed cases.  It was mentioned yesterday (IIRC) that they expected to see a reduction in other transmissible respiratory infections.

Ah. Its a noticeable feature that overseas, there is so much chatter about under reporting cases, deaths, everything, for a variety of reasons. Lil ol NZ is doing very well, and as you say, probably over reporting.

Two weeks ago Florida Governor Ron DeSantis overruled local counties' power to ban large religious gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Today he announced that Florida nursing homes a coronavirus 'nightmare,' and deploys national guard

He stated on April 9, 2020 in a meeting:

"This particular pandemic is one where I don’t think nationwide, there’s been a single fatality under 25."

I am trying to decide if paying $60-80 for 50 disposable masks on Trademe is "smart"; I know that there is almost no benefit of having a mask if you don't have any issues - they don't do anything to stop the nasties getting in - and a mask is really to stop you from spreading any nasties you may have

Another thing to consider is that you're signalling that you're being careful by wearing a mask. It may do very little to protect you, but it's signalling to anyone you encounter that you're aware of, and taking, precautions to deal with Covid19.

"New York City’s coronavirus death toll soared past 10,000 after officials added more than 3,700 people who had never tested positive for the virus but were presumed to have died of it."

Starter for ten, "What will Trump's response to this be?". Replies to the Trump thread please :-).

I'm just imagining any number of late-night TV hosts/comedians doing their Trump impressions of his response...

Not to be outdone by Florida, fellow Trump supporter Georgia Governor Brian Kemp two weeks ago
  • reopened beaches overruling a mayor's objections

  • and stated "individuals could have been infecting people before they ever felt bad, but we didn’t know that until the last 24 hours."
Today, there are now 14,500 COVID-19 cases in Georgia, and a death toll reaches 524.

Rikkitic:

I am elderly and vulnerable, but otherwise relatively healthy and self-sufficient. If I need something (done), I am perfectly capable of doing it for myself. Yet this kind of thinking basically condemns me to spending the rest of my life in lockdown. That sucks and people who think that is a good idea suck. The economy matters, but people matter more.

I'm not (yet) in a high-risk category but I live in a street with a number of people who are: retired nurse, retired serviceman, retired special-needs teacher, still-working but older special-needs teacher, and others. These people have done more for their country and community than Thornley ever has or will, and f**d if I'm going to gamble their lives just because Thornley wants to test his (deeply flawed) theory with them.

The Hill: CIA warned employees against using hydroxychloroquine for coronavirus

The CIA advised employees that taking an anti-malarial drug that has been touted by President Trump and others as a potential treatment for coronavirus could have potentially dangerous side effects, including death, The Washington Post reported.

The warning was reportedly published on a website for CIA staff with questions related to the coronavirus pandemic late last month.

“At this point, the drug is not recommended to be used by patients except by medical professionals prescribing it as part of ongoing investigational studies. There are potentially significant side effects, including sudden cardiac death, associated with hydroxychloroquine and its individual use in patients need to be carefully selected and monitored by a health care professional,” read a response to an employee who asked whether they should take the drug without a prescription, according to the Post.

“Please do not obtain this medication on your own,” was reportedly added in bold type.

The website also said there had been media reports saying the drug “has activity against the COVID-19 virus,” the newspaper noted.

"I’m not going to address any specifics, but information CIA provides to our global workforce has been—and will continue to be—consistent with the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and White House guidance," a CIA spokesperson told The Hill.

Trump has called the drug a “game changer” and told reporters that it is “looking like it’s having some good results.”

Why doesn't the story refer to him as "Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s newly-dismissed former head of driver development"?

As a followup to this, what are people's thoughts on wearing masks just to indicate that you're being careful and following precautions? The standard crapvendors now have masks for as little as USD5 including shipping, which makes it reasonable value for money as a means of telling others that you're being careful.
