it sounded a bit strange that they were only contacting the people that were sitting a couple of rows either side of the infected passenger. Don't they realise that people get up and walk around the cabin to stretch their legs, go to the toilet, etc?

I had read that someone who worked on a cruise ship was asked how the best way they avoid getting ill. They said they never touch their face with their hands, and they regularly wash their hands. If this person on the plane that was ill went to the toilet, which is almost certain, they touched the door handle, and so would a lot of other people who used that particular toilet. That could also help explain why in real life conditions, the spread around a plane can be quite random.

I don' really agree with that, because they could use clean energy that doesn't produce CO2. eg have hydro, solar or wind, or even nuclear power instead of coal power generation. But coal is likely cheaper, which is built into lower priced goods. So it is a false economy, as we pay for it later with global warming problems. I understand they are moving to cleaner power now, and that will likely result in higher priced goods, as China move to produce higher quality stuff. Then I can see a lot of this cheaper manufacturing moving to lower wage countries again, like Africa or India.

We could also use that argument about NZ's environmental problems with our farming, such as dairy and runoff into rivers, much of the food being exported. That pollution is NZ's, and NZ's to address,  not the rest of the worlds who buy our food products.

China does have solar, in fact they are building a town that will be 100% green. They have hydro, massive hydro in places. But its 1.7B people.

The rest of us could stop buying Chinese products, until they are green? Nuclear, I'm not sure the rest of us would want that, although I favour it as the 50 year source to bridge the gap.

The products we buy, we buy, knowing they are full of carbon usage. So is our milk and cheese that others buy.

We could sort our farming emisisions out, and clean the rivers, then add that cost onto our dairy products, then no one will buy them. Farmers could not afford to farm if they had to be near to net 100% green and clean

OT though, belongs in the CC Topic

This.

The first part (not touching your face) is very hard to do - give it a try and see how long before your attention lapses.
Soap and warm water is fine for washing hands etc frequently.  The virus is enveloped in a protein capsid which includes the protein spikes that bind to receptors of your cells, the capsid is protected by lipids.  Soap emulsifies the lipids and inactivates the virus - it might not be high tech, but it works.

Any difference between bar soap and liquid soap? Is one significantly better than the other for this?

Doesn't appear to be any difference,

Although there have been concerns in the past about Viruses living on Bar Soap for periods of time, but this appears mainly to be apocryphal

Remember hand washing is not a 20 second job, wash thoroughly for at least as long as it takes to sing happy birthday. Remember also, extend the washing partially up the forearms and don't render it all useless by drying your hands on an already used towel. We also have an antibacterial spray for spaying the tap handle after use.

Just been to my GP for the first time since the Corona Virus has hit the headlines, first thing I noticed were the huge signs on the front door saying if you are here for anything Corona Virus related to not enter and ring an 0800 number. Also my GP was quick to do some basic checks like temperature without prompting.

Travel restrictions reconfirmed as precaution against COVID-19

Cabinet has confirmed that travel restrictions currently in place for China and Iran will continue for a further week, while people entering the country from South Korea and northern Italy will now be told to go into self-isolation.

“The international situation with the COVID-19 coronavirus continues to evolve rapidly. Our priority remains protecting the health and safety of the public.

“Travel restrictions continue to be an important part of our comprehensive response.

“China remains the largest single source of COVID-19 cases and while information out of Iran is variable, there is clearly ongoing community transmission there.

“It makes sense to use temporary travel restrictions to limit the potential spread of the disease from both countries.

“However there are also concerning outbreaks in northern Italy and South Korea.

“As a result, and based on fresh advice from Health officials, anyone who has been in those regions in the last 14 days will now be registered for self-isolation upon arrival in New Zealand.

“This is based on an expert assessment of risk. It recognises that while there are outbreaks in both countries they also have well developed health systems, and the outbreaks are largely located in specific regions.

“We know self-isolation works. It is a longstanding and successful approach to managing infectious diseases – and has proved its worth again in recent weeks.

“New Zealand will continue to take a precautionary approach to COVID-19. Although we have now had our first confirmed case, our actions at the border have helped keep the virus at bay – and given us valuable time to prepare,” David Clark said.

NOTE: The temporary travel restrictions have been extended until 11:59pm on Tuesday 10 March.

476 new cases in Korea announced today, more than double the new case report for the whole of China.

While that looks bad for Korea, the exponential growth rate of new cases has to be mainly because of how thoroughly they're contact tracing and testing - they've gone all out to try to contain it.

apparently the bulk of the cases are in one cult group of 9000

It appears there maybe two more suspected cases reported on RNZ, but no more details, and they are awaiting the test results back today. I read that two in Nelson who were on the same plane had also been isolated, but not sure if they are the same ones, as the health minister also didn't know when he was interviewed, but the article I read about them was that they hadn't been tested.

Two confirmed cases in Indonesia, claimed to have been caught from a Japanese tourist who was later confirmed infected in Malaysia.

Apparently the patients are hospitalised in Jakarta.

The surprising thing about cases being finally confirmed in Indonesia is how they haven't had any cases until now.  Modeling based on travel out of China - even to the extent of region by city by airport - had Indonesia as the most at risk.
